Sage/Saige...for a boy?

DH is really set on Sage (he originally wanted to spell it Saige). I thought he meant it for a girl, but we found out we are having a boy and he still insists on it. It's the only name he has contributed really but I just don't see it. Help me out, please! Would you side-eye this on a boy?!

  • I have never heard Sage on a boy...

  • I know one Sage personally, and know of a couple others. All are female.

That being said, I wouldn't necessarily side-eye it on a boy as he was being introduced to me, but if I saw the name on paper/email (ex. Sage Smith) I would likely assume that the person was female.
  • I know a Sage boy. It fits him perfectly. He is rather a Sage kind of guy...ha ha...for real :)

I've only ever known one Sage (spelled like that) and he was a boy. I like it better for a boy, it doesn't seem feminine to me.
  • I knew a boy Sage and wouldn't side eye it. You can always insist on middle naming it too if DH insists on using it but has no other constructive input on any other names!
  • I've heard it for both sexes and I prefer it on a boy. Spelled Sage, though.  The other spelling is awful.

If you're not feeling it, would he compromise with Gage?

Either way, he needs to be open to other suggestions if you truly don't want to use it.

  • Sage and I always assume boy

  • I only know one Sage and it's a girl.

As PPs noted, it seems it can be used on either sex.  But if you're not loving it, then it's a no go.  He needs to come up with other options.
  • I had never heard of it for a boy but I don't know anyone named it so I guess I'm ambivalent. I would still assume girl at first though. Not a big fan of the name, but if you choose it, I'd avoid the Saige spelling.
  • He needs to start being more open on names. You shouldn't feel you have to use a name you don't love just because he won't be open to more than one name. FWIW, spelling should definitely be Sage and I think it's one of those truly unisex names. I wouldn't side eye, but I don't like it that much either...

  • A friend named her son Sage and it suits him perfectly.
  • I actually don't mind Sage on a boy (not Saige, though). If you don't love it, what about Sawyer?
  • If I heard that name, I would assume it was a boy. The only one I've ever heard of: Sylvester Stallone named his son Sage, although I'm not sure I would consider him to be someone that I would use as inspiration/role model...

I know one Saige, who is a girl. I side-eyed the name when I met her because it seems like a make-up name to me. I think it's even worse for boy. I agree that your DH should be more open on names so that you can find a name you both like.

  • @kmvisioli, Sawyer is by far one of our favorite names, but one of our close friends has already used it on her son  :(

  • I've never met a Sage, boy or girl, but I'm sure that I've seen it on lists online for either.  I don't like it as a name for either gender.  It's too hippie and new age-y.  If your husband is really set on nature names, you could suggest

    Basil
    Flint
    Forrest
    Hunter
    River
    Robin
    Wolf

@LizaKate1213 bummer :-/ Suggesting a random assortment of others that might work: Everett, Soren, Asher, Samuel, Heath, Fletcher, Shepard, Milo, Lyle, Phoenix
  • I'm surprised to hear so many people say they've met make Sage's! I have only ever met one and it's a female, personally I'm not a fan of it on either sex but definitely think it is better suited for a girl than a boy.

  • LOVE it for a boy!
  • @JMU_Bride09, hippy/new-age is fine with us!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. We are at a standstill until DH goes through as many lists as possible. He won't share his favorites with me until he's "ready," whatever that means! Haha I appreciate everyone's input!

  • My friend named her son Slade. Has kind of the same ring to it and definitely feels more masculine. Just a thought.

i dont mind it on a boy spelled sage
  • The only Sage I knew for a long time is male. I now know a 6 year old girl with that name so it's fairly unisex IMO. But definitely go with Sage. The other spelling is terrible

If you don't like it, talk to him about finding a name you both like.
  • I don't like it and I wouldn't use it. I would tell my husband that we can pick another name we both like. If he refuses to compromise I would tell him I will pick the name myself.

If I heard someone call "Sage" I probably would assume it was a girl.
  • Managed to get this name tossed finally. I just don't see anything masculine about it and held my ground. We are still clueless about what we will name this baby, but it will not be Sage!
