Any Websites/Articles about Starting Solids

Hey everyone! My LO is 4 1/2 months, and I am not ready to start solids yet, but I feel like I should start getting prepared since I plan on (attempting) to make my own baby food.  Does anyone know of any good websites or articles out there about starting out solids? I have the basic concepts down, but is there a place with a generalized suggested foods list to start with?

  • I found a bunch of great stuff on pinterest. Not all of the pins did I open, but I read one that almost convinced me to do baby led weaning. I don't think I have it in me though. Props to all you ladies that do it!!

@ekscopp I'm thinking about doing BLW. I know a lot of people aren't comfortable with it because of the fear of choking but it was actually his pediatrician who brought it up! She also said its perfectly fine to do traditional baby food while doing BLW. I hadn't even thought of looking on Pinterest though I'll have to check it out!
  • @kaym6 I may try to do that, incorporate some BLW elements with traditional baby food. I really like the idea, but with my busy schedule and the fact that I don't really eat all that healthy, it seems like a lot to me.
  • Seems like a dumb question, but what is baby lead weaning?

@ekscopp that's what I plan on doing I think! still haven't started anything though just trying to do research.

@BGoperadiva it's essentially where you give the baby pieces of actual food that aren't purées and they feed it to themselves. There can be a lot of gagging involved and of course the risk of choking more so than feeding them a purée but there are also a ton of benefits! There are some really good videos on YouTube that make it seem way less crazy lol

  • I'm planning to do baby led weaning as well and may do some purees. I bought this book off of Amazon and am loving it so far!https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/161519021X/ref=sxl1?qid=1465487408&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65

Our local nurses recommend skipping purees and going only with BLW. If they are too young to eat finely chopped food, then they are still too young to eat solids at all.

For tough foods like veggies, they say to just steam and then chop them up. One helpful suggestion was to store pre-steamed foods in ice cube trays and then melt them as needed.
  • We LOVE baby led weaning. Seriously do some research, it's a quarter of the work and LO is the least picky eater ever! Never going back to purees, that was just a constant battle!

You have to watch your LO, but we've only been doing it two weeks now and she has only kind of choked once, and has almost completely stopped gagging. She's already so great at chewing. (PS this is a good sign that your kid is ready for it)

@Blueyedsky my little guy imitates me chewing every single time I'm eating and even when I'm not sometimes he will be making the chewing motion with his little mouth. This made me think he would prob enjoy BLW more!
