Amber teething necklace

So I have had a ton of mom's I know swear by the amber teething necklace.  It is supose to help with the pain. I even had a couple mom's say they help with drooling. I decided after doing a ton of research on them that they may be worth it. I bought two. One for my son and one for my neighbors baby girl. I got mine because once he hit 4 months he started teething and you could tell he was just uncomfortable.  And now at 5 months we have two perfect bottom teeth! I just got the necklaces in the mail today so I put ours on right away and took the neighbors to her. Just wondering if any other moms have used them? I'm excited to see how it works. And he looks so cute!

Re: Amber teething necklace

  • I've been wondering about the amber teething necklaces. I don't know anyone who used one personally so I just researched online. After research I was still up in the air about them, so I never purchased one. Let me know what you think, I would love to hear if it's worth ordering one!

  • I will get one. The question is which one? I want it to be authentic and unbreakable.... It breaking makes me nervous! And there are soooooooooooooo many options.
  • Do you keep it on 24/7? I would be an anxious mess letting my DD sleep in it! I have heard great things too, but that it needs to be authentic high quality amber. I just get so nervous putting something on her neck bc she moves so much I fear it getting caught and choking her.
  • Yes yes yes! My son is almost 18 months old and has worn his almost every single day since he was 7 weeks old (early teether). The days where he didn't have it, boy could you tell! He would be a total monster! Baby girl has one too now and again, I can tell if she's gone a day or so without it. Every warning package says not to let them sleep in it, maybe in rebellious, or stupid, but my kids sleep in them.

Honestly, I thought people were nuts when I heard about the necklaces. But they work. They are not the ultimate cure though. There is still drooling and still discomfort, but it is lessened.

From what I've read, amber has a natural analgesic in it. The warmth from their body allows it to be released from the beads. It can help with anything from poor skin, teething, ear aches, acid reflux, etc. I've read that the lighter colored amber works best, along with it being unpolished.
  • @BarrettJ89 that is what I researched as well as far as color and it being unpolished. I also let my baby sleep in his. All the moms I know do as well. I guess I agree with every thing you said. Lol I hope our next round of teething goes better! Thank you for adding in your input!
  • @kimber308 I got mine off etsy. I read a ton of reviews and went with the one that had dang near a 5 star rating. I got 2 of them and after shipping I paid about $36. Good luck! As far as color is concerned they say the lighter the color the better but it's only a very very small percentage better. The same with it being polished or unpolished.

There's absolutely no scientific evidence that amber necklaces soothe pain from teething or anything else, and wearing a beaded necklace while unsupervised is a major choking and strangulation hazard. I know there are a lot of anecdotes flying around, and you do you, but there's no way we're going down that road. I don't mean to denigrate anyone or start a fight, but if you're just learning about this trend now and thinking of getting on board, I'd recommend reading this first: https://scienceornot.net/2012/10/30/amber-necklaces-and-teething-babies/

Again, nothing personal against anyone who has used these necklaces or planned to. I know it's very common, and we all want to do everything we can to make our babies feel better. But this is a classic example of a scientific claim that's hard for people to evaluate on the individual level (since teething pain waxes and wanes on its own, and since people are susceptible to confirmation bias), so reading scientific studies like those linked in the blog post is helpful.
I have been reading the same all morning. I guess it has a placebo effect for a lot of people. I think we'll be fine without it, but I'll wait and see.

Personally all the evidence points to a placebo effect so the choking hazard is not worth it.

::edit:: That article is worth the read. I like how the supposed analgesic is only able to liquefy and seep from the amber at 187°C. No where near body temp.
  • Ok so I know some people do not agree with them but I did say I would keep you updated on how it worked for us. Ramsey has now had tooth 3 poke through and number 4 is on its way and I had no idea until he smiled when we got home today.  Maybe it's coincidence that these teeth have caused him no pain or any signs of teething.  I will see how the rest of our teething journey goes with the necklace but for now I'm saying I think I'm a believer.
  • I bought one and plan to try it when get to teething. I'm a believer in holistic medicine.
Be sure to check out the website you order from though. I got mine from Lithuania, and I'm pretty sure the site I ordered it in must not have been secure. My credit card was hacked (luckily it was immediately caught.)

@tfrangul I'm just a huge skeptic without evidence. I know babies that (without amber necklaces) had teeth cut through without parents knowing because the baby experienced no symptoms. To me the risks outweigh the placebo benefit. To each their own though!
  • @jrouge12 I'm not a first time mom. I've been a nanny and did in home daycare.  So I'm well aware of how every baby is different.  So your right. To each their own. I appreciate your opinion though.
  • I have one on DD and she has worn it since 4 months. It stopped her excessive drooling and she was much more mellow teething while wearing it. (We lost it for about a month once... it was hell) She never really noticed it till now(2 1/2). But now it is her pretty necklace she gets so many compliments on.

The photographer we use for the kids also wears one! She has arthritis in her neck and has said wearing the necklace has helped her tremendously.

I was skeptical until I saw how well it worked on my DD. Best $18 I've ever spent!
