2nd Trimester

Deciphering the sex

So our big u/s is in two weeks. We do not want to know the sex of the baby and will tell the technician that. But my question is for those of you that have found out the sex...when you're getting the ultrasound and looking at the baby is it just obvious? If the baby spreads his/her legs and you get a view, can you see what's clearly there? Or did the technician have to point things out for you and then it made sense? Like if there's penis there, will I be able to figure that out on my own or did you need the technician to point things out for you??

For those of you that are 2nd time moms and are having the opposite sex now, when you had this u/s did you see a clear difference?

?

Re: Deciphering the sex

  • maybe i'm oblivious...but w/ both my babies my husband could tell the sex right away and I had no idea...even when they showed it to me I had to really look. This time w/ a boy they did a bottoms up view and I could see his boy parts...but that was after the whole thing was over

  • I'm worried about this too. ?I've seen so many posted on these boards and heard the descriptions of what to look for, that I'm afraid I'll know. ?And I won't be able to not look!

  • We could defintly tell it was a boy.... because in between his legs you could fully see a little penis... I may have only noticed it because the u/s tech froze the pic on the screen and circled it, also I had a 3d scan, so it was pretty obvious.
  • I could really tell that my boy was a boy, but that's when they went in for a closer view.  If you are just viewing the baby as a whole or as much of him/her that will fit on the screen, you shouldn't be able to tell.  Just tell your u/s tech that you don't want to know before hand and you should be okay.  I have a lot of friends/family members that did not want to know, and did not find out after the u/s.  And since you don't want to know, you won't be studying the screen like I know we did to try to figure it out.
  • DS was a surprise. When they did the u/s they made it a point to stay away from that area. I could never see anything that looked like a penis. If you want it to be a surprise, they will be able to do a good job at making sure you don't find out.

  • It was pretty obvious that he was a boy. The tech kind of swept over the area first, and both DH and I could tell right away before she said anything. When she went back for a closer look, there was definitely no mistaking it.
  • The US tech first showed us the lack of boy parts on our little girl, and then the doctor came in and ultra-zoomed in until I could actually see the labia and the crack.  I never thought that it would be that CLEAR.  However, the doctor told me that we had a very cooperative baby, which helped.

  • I would not have known the difference between the boy and girl parts without the ultrasound tech pointing stuff out and telling me what to look for. There's so much movement on the screen that it's not like you focus in on it, especially since mostly the tech is just taking measurements of the various organs and body parts and they aren't searching for a between-the-legs shot until the end if you want them to.

  • We had done some research via Google before I went, so we knew what both would look like. I noticed the three lines before she said anything...and my husband was even able to recognize it!
