Baby Names

Eleanor / Nora - popular?

The only name that my husband and I have been able to agree on so far is Eleanor, nn of Nora.  We tend to like less popular names, only bc our first names are both so common.  I am worried that both Eleanor and Nora seem to be trendy right now?  Our sons name is Wesley, if that helps.

Any other suggestions are appreciated.  My husband likes Amelia, which I like but I also tend to shorten names and can't really think of a good nn, and Cecilia, but I know several kids names Cecilia already....

Along with that, my brother passed away less than a year ago and we'd like to honor him in some way.  This is a little challenging since we are having a girl.  His middle name was Daniel - so we are considering using Danielle as a middle name.

Re: Eleanor / Nora - popular?

  • First off, love the Danielle mn idea. Second, Nora doesn't seem too trendy but Ellie definitely is (which Eleanor may lead to). Third, nn for Amelia could be Emmy, Amy, Mia, or Lia. Both Eleanor and Amelia are nice with Wesley and work with with Danielle!
  • I think Eleanor Danielle is beautiful.

  • Eleanor is very popular. Maybe Danielle as a first name? Or what about Alexandra? Classic but not popular right now.
  • If we went with Eleanor, we'd likely call her Nora right away, hopefully eliminating the Ellie nn - I'm not a huge fan plus my cousin just named her baby Ellie.

I'm hesitant to name the baby Danielle bc I think my parents would find it difficult to call her that since it would be a direct reminder of my brother.  They seem to have a hard time talking about him.

I also like Brynnen, but husband does not.

  • I see people asking about Eleanor often on TB, but don't actually know anyone IRL who has actually used the name. I think it sounds very pretty paired with Danielle.
  • What about Lenora? It would eliminate "the risk" of people calling her Ellie, and you could still use Nora as a NN, and it's less popular than Eleanor.
  • I do think that Eleanor is very popular right now.

However, if you plan to call her Nora right from the start, why not just name her Nora?  Nora Danielle is a beautiful name and I love that you plan to honor your brother.

  • Eleanor is popular but it's pretty classic too. It's in the same category of many popular grandmother style names coming back into usage. I wouldn't consider it trendy as it has a long history of usage

  • I like Eleanor/ Nora. And I think you would solve the NN issue w/ Ellie if you called her Nora right away. I know a few Eleanor's but they are varying ages and I don't think of it as super popular. I think it's a classic and Eleanor Danielle sounds pretty.
  • I like the idea of just Nora Danielle. Very pretty!

I agree you have a pretty name picked out already, but some less popular names similar to Amelia:

    Allegra (nn Allie)
    Aminda (nn Mindy, Minnie)

    Me-37, DH-38
Married in 2006, TTC #1 since Jan 2012

He settles her in her home as a happy mother of children, praise the Lord! (Psalms 113:9)
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understand, will guard your heart and mind in Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:7)

  • Amelia could be Amy, Melly, Millie, Lia... Amelia Danielle has a nice flow. :) You might also consider Danni and Daniella if those fit with names you're thinking of. Cecily might be an alternative to Cecelia. Good luck!
  • Thanks all!  We had a list of 6 names last time so I keep thinking I want to go with a list this time as well...  We'll keep thinking, but sounds like maybe Nora is not as popular as I first feared.
  • I think some of these names must be regional in popularity because here in NY, Eleanor is definitely not near the top of the list. It happens to be my niece's middle name, but only because she was named after her grandmother. Eleanor Danielle is pretty though, so why not?
  • I know someone whose daughter is Eleanora but they call her Ellie. I think the Ellie NN is a lot more popular than Nora, and I definitely think it's a beautiful name! So I don't think Nora would be too popular, and it's a lovely name. :)
