Baby Names

What would you do?

I posted the other day about Lyn vs Len...
But I have a dilemma.

DH and I have 2 total different name styles.

But we've managed to "agree" and genuinely love the same girl name BUT we disagree on the spelling.

Lenora vs Lynora

He is adament on Lynora, but I fear the stigma in people thinking we misspelled her name. (Because for some reason I seem to care so much. Probably because I dislike misspelled names myself)
Now I'm not exactly opposed to Lynora, because we'd call her Lynie, and I prefer that over Lenie...

So I'm really considering sucking it up and just spelling it Lynora. His opinion and input matter to me. Plus she'd never find her name in anything anyway, neither would our older LO's

DD is Cecelia vs Cecilia. Not exactly misspelled, just derived from 2 different languages.

Would you suck it up, or insist to spell the name traditionally?

  • I want to add, to be fair for arguments sake.

    DH's grandmother is Mamie Lynn.

So I totally understand his desire to spell it Lynora.

DD is Cecelia Michelle, Michelle being my late mothers name. And this babies middle name will be JoAnn, which is my grams middle name.

  • Lynora is just cringe worthy. And personally, it would never occur to me that it was spelled that way in "honor" of someone with the name Lynn.

Perhaps you could use Mary or Margaret  (which Mamie is a diminutive of ) for the middle name instead, to spread out the honor names a bit more?
  • I agree with PP.  If it were me, I'd let him pick the middle name to honor someone in his family if it meant he would agree to spell the child's name correctly.

This. What about a similar sounding name like Lena or Eleanora. Or something comply elegy different by use Lynn as a MN.

Totally agree. I think it's time to go back to the drawing board.

  • I'm in the minority, I don't see anything wrong with it, especially after you posted that it would be in honor of someone special.
  • You're already choosing a lesser known name and then to mispell it purposely is too much. But I guess pairing it with Cecelia it's kind of whatever at this point.

    Lol what?
Cecelia isn't misspelled in the slightest.
So how is pairing a misspelled name with Cecelia "kind of whatever" ?

Parents who don't spell their child's name correctly, makes me feel very.very.stabby. For the love of all that is holy, please go with Lenora.

  • I feel the same way.

But I have this pit of weakness, because my husband, whom I LOVE, loves it the wrong way.

    D:

Trust me, I will do my do diligence to convince him of how awful it is. I just feel guilty? Doing it... lol

In my head, I'm like "I know a little boy with the middle name skywalker, what's a missplaced y..." then i read names like Kaydence, jayme, allysyn, and the like and I want to scream!

  • Lynora doesn't look misspelled to me - it just looks made up IMO. Which it sounds like it basically is. I think it's nice to honor DH's grandmother but I'd think about ways to do so more clearly (i.e. Joanna Lynn is a sweet name). In terms of made up names though, we've all seen a lot worse.  Lynora is pretty and holds a special meaning and at least it's original.

I get this, I really do. I wanted to consider every name DH threw out there because I loved him and his enthusiasm. However, when he suggested Ashlee I had to use my vetoe power and demand that our daughter deserved a name that was spelled correctly. We went back to the drawing board and chose Savannah (his suggestion). It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is a real name, spelled correctly and I love it even more because he is the one who came up with it  :)

  • no way do not agree to this
  • But as much as you love your husband, remember how much you're going to love this kid all your life. I'd keep fighting to give her the best name possible and Lynora just isn't the best name here.

have you thought about naming a daughter Lynn ? Lynn is kind of refreshing and underused. The Welsh spelling is Llynn or Llyn (makes it a little different but legit)
also suggesting Lynde (Lynn-dee) , Lynette, Evelyn, Lenora nn Lynnie
  • Love Lenora (nn Lena or Nora)
    Like Joanna Lynn, Lindsey JoAnn
Acceptable: Evelyn, Adalyn, Marilyn, virtually any of the recently popular -lyn names
  • My name is Lynn and if someone slaughtered my name to make Lynora or Lynie I'd be very sad. Also, idk if this is on purpose but I read Lynie as Lie-nie. Is that how you mean to pronounce that? Btw I've met just a few other Lynn's, it's very rare as a first name (very common MN).  I like Lenora though!
  • Could the mn be Lynn? Lenora Lynn?
