Postpartum Weight/Body Check In

Before I begin I want to emphasize a few things:

1. This thread is for encouragement, solidarity and accountability, not to simply compare ourselves to others. This is why I would request that no one say their former and current weights, and only focus on the weight gained during pregnancy.

2. Everyone is different, and that is fine! Some people gained more, some less, but likely everyone is going to want to return to their former weight or better, whatever that may be.

3. This weight took 9 months to put on. It could take that much time or longer to lose it. Be kind to yourself! Our bodies are healing and nutrition is important, especially if you're breastfeeding! Stay healthy!

4. This is not a humble brag thread. If you are one of the lucky few that fit into your 00 skinny jeans hours after giving birth, that's awesome! This thread is not really for that purpose. Start your own bragging thread at your own peril ;). However, even if you have no more weight to lose, but your body isn't quite back in place, feel free to participate in the exercise portion.

With all my disclaimers out of the way, here is the check in:

1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy?

2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose?

3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals?

4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?

5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy?

6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves?

If anyone knows of fun workouts you can do with baby, especially yoga, please share!
I don't know if they're considered fun, but when DS was a baby I used to do squats, side lunges, and calf raises while holding him. I've also seen people doing pushups while their baby is laying on the floor close enough to kiss them on the head during each rep.

  • I love this thread!

    1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy?

    30lbs

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose?

Havent weighed yet but I'm guessing about 15lbs

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals?

Protein, protein, protein...cutting back on all the carbs that was my diet staple during pregnancy

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?

walking...I did my first bit of exercise today walking around the mall and I was bloody exhausted. I'm looking forward to having the energy and endurance back! Also looking forward to getting involved in a stroller exercise group!

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy?

    before: weights and running
during: not a damn thing for 9 months!!

    6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves?

i'd like for my tastebuds to return to normal so I can start enjoying healthy foods again. I feel like I'm going to be starting from square one, like the days 4 years ago before I started regularly exercising...that scares me because I know how bad it's going to hurt :( also my back hurts like hell from the weight of my boobs and post delivery so that's not helping anything right now!
  • @ayeshaohara  That's interesting what you said about your taste buds, because I remember reading some research that when you are sleep-deprived, your body automatically prefers the salty, sweet, fatty stuff that we know we shouldn't be eating. It's actually scientific fact basically that being a new mom makes it hard to eat nutritiously! I had terrible PP anxiety with my son and had zero appetite for weeks, but when I finally wanted to eat again, all I wanted was toast. Definitely made the whole healthy eating thing an uphill battle :/

    1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy?
    45lb

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose?
    25-30lb
initially I lost 10.  Then in the following days I lost 6 more.  Unfortunately over the last 3 days I have gained 3.  I don't know what's happening, it's very upsetting to not only be not losing, but gaining!

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals?
still trying to figure this one out

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?
i seriously can't wait to start exercising... I plan on getting back to doing vinyassa yoga.  So I figured I would start with slower flowing classes, then work my way back to vinyassa.  I had second degree tearing so my doc said absolutely no exercise for 6 weeks :-(

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy?
    vinyassa yoga

    6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves?
for second time moms that had 2nd degree tearing or episiotomy-  did you return to exercise as soon as the 6weeks PP was up? If so, how was it?  In 3 weeks PP and my stitches still hurt very badly.  Im praying that they will be OK when the 6 weeks is up
  • @tripledaggerWed95976 I had a second degree tear as well...I'm 12 days pp and my stitches have dissolved completely! It seems odd that 3 weeks later yours haven't. I'm also not in any pain anymore. I would check with your doc to make sure everything is healing properly.  I haven't discussed exercise with my doc yet but I'm totally planning to be back at it by 6 weeks.

Really?! Omg I totally thought what I've been experiencing is normal!  I'm definitely going to check in with my doctor about this.  Because I'm still at the point where I'm sitting on a boppy pillow every day because it hurts too bad to sit down without one

With DD my stitches didn't dissolve until 5 weeks pp I think? I was still in pain around 3 weeks I think too. So I wouldn't worry too much, but checking in with your doctor wouldn't hurt anything.

That makes me feel better!  I guess it probably is different for everyone depending on where exactly the stitches are placed too.  One thing I know for sure, PP tearing is such a bitch to recover from!

I've actually been craving healthy food! That said, that's all I have around, and since we aren't going much of anywhere, that's what I eat!

  • 1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy?
    About 55 pounds.

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose?
44 pounds. I lost about 10 right after delivery and have lost another pound since then.

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals?
my family is vegan so we generally eat pretty healthy. Especially since giving birth I've really been drawn to fruits. I think continuing with lots of whole foods is going to make things a lot easier.

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?
im going to start with slow walks, then once my perineum is healed move to some yoga and then get into more challenging work outs.

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy?
I don't really like working out at all so I mostly did yoga and walking. I'm sort of viewing my post partum body as an opportunity to become a bit of a gym rat.

    6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves?
Im 3 days post partum- stomach is definitely shrinking but today I just feel so jiggly! I'm reminding myself to be kind to my body (tip: looking at your baby while having the thought "I'm just sort of flabby" will really put things into perspective!).

  • 1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy? 40lbs

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose? 18lbs

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals? String cheese, eggs, etc. my DH is actually making my meals which is forcing me to eat real food vs the cereal I usually went with. I think that in itself will help

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so? I've started going on walks with the dogs and DS. However I'm on another BP med that makes it drop so for several hours after I take that, im
confined to couch. I'm hoping to do some basic squats, etc. first rather than jump start with cardio.

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy? Ran before and insanity throughout.

    6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves? Here is to hoping breastfeeding helps take if it off faster!

A question for STM- how soon after did you feel like your workouts were on par with pre pregnancy?

  • 1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy?

    30 lbs

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose?

Haven't weighed myself yet but if I had to guess, I'd say probably 10 or 15 lbs.

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals?

No clue. I'm still concerned figuring out my child.

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?

Not really a planner so I'll probably just figure something out later.

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy?

Not much, to be honest. Guilty as charged.

    6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves?

I was so concerned I would be disgusted by my body afterwards but truthfully I feel good about myself. Obviously I'm dealing with physical pain and emotional moments (leaving the child, and the current situation of jaundice) but I don't hate my body. So I'm a little flabby, who cares. I have this amazing baby who recognized my voice and knows me already. That, to me, is totally worth all the other junk I had to put up with.

You can reach any goal you set your mind to but set realistic goals. Don't set a goal to drop back to your pre-pregnancy weight by June 1. You will set yourself up for failure. Just take care of your body and your baby and give yourself some wiggle room.

  • 1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy?

Not sure but I'd have to guess 50 ibs or so. I stopped paying attention once I reached 30.

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose?

im only 3 days post party but I'd say at least 30 ibs to go.

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals?

fruit and veggies. I love having them cut up and ready to eat in the fridge. It helps me make healthier choices

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?

walking and yoga. I had a Csection though so yoga will definitely be awhile

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy?

    not right now.

    1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy?

    48 pounds

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose?

I have lost a little over 20 pounds the first week. Still want to lose another 30 pounds to get back to pre-preg weight.

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals?

flaxseed oatmeal and yogurt/granola, kind bars. LOTS OF WATER and gateraide instead of soda

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?

    walking

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy?

    walking

    6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves?

    not right now.

  • 1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy? 40 lbs

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose? 30 lbs

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals? Hummus and veggies, apples and cheese, red meat+veggies (I pretty much want this nonstop at the moment, which is unlike me), yogurt

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?  I've been walking a lot as a consequence of some of our plans lately, and I'll probably stick with that for a while.  After my 6 week appointment or whenever I'm cleared for real exercise, I'll start back on some less intense workout videos.

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy?  Before - Insanity, P90x, toddler wrangling, lots of walking; during - walking only

    6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves?  i feel like I have such a longer way to go than I did after my first pregnancy, and it seems daunting.

How long before post birth rapid weight loss ends? I'm still dropping blood volume right?  My weight had gone down another 6lbs since Friday.
  • mcb2016mcb2016 member
I was happy to step on the scale and find out I'm about 5 pounds up from my pre pregnancy weight. I still need to stay focused on healthy eating because there has been way too much comfort food going on here lately. I lost just over a hundred pounds before getting pregnant and am still obese. I put on way more weight than I hoped to during the pregnancy around 30 pounds. My goal was only to gain 10 which was near impossible. For some reason third trimester I was gaining weight very quickly.

    Lilypie Pregnancy tickers

  • @mcb2016 That's great to hear! I had lost over 65 pounds prior to getting pregnant (almost out of obese territory) and had hoped to only gain 15-20 pounds. Unfortunately it looks like I'll be up around 50 by the time LO is born (induction next Tuesday if LO hasn't arrived by then).

I've been very active throughout pregnancy and am hoping that the pounds drop quickly like they seem to be for you!
  • 1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy?  42 lbs

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose? 12 lbs.  In fact, just today DH asked if I had weighed myself and I was totally surprised it hadn't crossed my mind!  Babies are 8 days old.

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals?  ?  I'm just an 'everything in moderation type'.

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?  I've started with some slow walking so far (pushing the stroller in the neighborhood a couple blocks).  Eventually I'll do longer walks and then go back to jazzercise.

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy?  I did jazzercise until about 30 weeks.  I've done it for years and love it.

    6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves? I have major work to do on my actual belly.  I was soooo stretched out carrying twins this time.  I just need to give it time...
  • KurrantKurrant member
@lalala2004 yes to all of those. I haven't had any poop issues. Nurses gave me something as soon as I could walk and I swear it lasted a week before my system went from overdrive to normal pre- pregnancy poop. i guess its all normal then. I just didn't expect to lose over an lb a day after the initial weight drop from the birth. I suppose it will ease up soon.
  • Finally weighed today. I'm down 20lbs, so I have about 10-15lbs more to lose. Pretty happy with that!
  • The rapid weight drop off after birth I feel like is just designed to give you that little boost you need every day :)
  • KurrantKurrant member
@JoMunson Yes! It's giving me the motivation to keep my healthy habits up.  I'm sure its mostly just water, poop and blood. On the other hand I weighed in today and was down a further half pound from yesterday and I suddenly thought "How much is too much?" I don't want anything to affect my milk supply.
  • @kurrant weight loss itself won't impact supply-- just be sure to eat about 500 calories more than a healthy pre-pregnancy diet and drink lots of water. Relax and enjoy the postpartum rapid loss!
  • Any other STM feel like they're getting ab strength back much faster this time around? I can do things this time 1w pp that I couldn't do for months after having DS. I'm wondering if it's from carrying/lifting DS throughout pregnancy and/or my doctor closing my cs differently this time around.
  • Yes @kbrands7! I feel like my entire recovery this took days instead of weeks this time, mostly out of necessity. I never imagined I would be out and about with both kids or lifting both within the week. I have been pleasantly surprised with how well and how quickly my body is recovering. But we also carried toddlers pregnant, so I feel like anything is easier than that now!
  • 1. How much weight did you gain in the pregnancy?
    30-35 Ibs

    2. If you've weighed post baby, how much of that do you still have left to lose?
I don't honestly know. Is it weird that I haven't even thought of weighing myself till now?

    3. What are some healthy snack/s or meal/s you think will help you reach your goals?
I bought lots of fruits and veggies, and planned to make *actual* healthy meals. I don't do diets. But I will be eating healthier foods, more often it helps that I'm too broke to go out to eat. Lmao.

    4. How do you plan to ease back into activity after you are healed enough to do so?
Well, it's been a week since delivery, so I want to start up slow with some yoga, stretching, walking, and pelvic excersizes for a few more weeks. I'm going to wait until my 6th week appointment to get the "ok" on more demanding excersizes.

    5. What exercise did you do before pregnancy? During pregnancy? Mostly just yoga, just before (and during) pregnancy. Things got a bit cray cray for me before that and I had stopped doing my circuit training etc.

    6. Any questions, comments, rants or raves?
jussayinnn, last post-pregnancy I started with the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred (alternating with yoga videos) on YouTube in my living room, and it was amazing.

Also, it's true, as a STM recovery (as far as moving around, etc ) is much faster!

    ~~** I Love My Boys <3**~~

  • my vagina area is pretty much back to normal but my perineum/rectum area are still kindof messed up, I'm pretty sure I've got two hemorrhoids that came from pushing for about 9 hours. Hopefully those go away soon!
