Winter

Since you all are honest with you opinions on names, what do you think of Winter for a girl? Is it too "out there"? I feel like when I tell people my daughters name is Winter it would get weird looks.

I am really starting to like it lately. Emmeline is currently my only contender if I have a girl, but I can see Winter possibly being a real choice for me. So please be brutally honest!

Re: Winter

  • I don't hate it but I would never personally use it.  In my opinion:

    Pros:
    Uncommon
    Winnie is a cute nickname

    Cons:
Naming your child after a dark, cold season may not be optimal (especially if you're superstitious at all)
It is rare enough that you (and she) will probably get weird looks

  • Wouldn't do it as a fn. What about in the MN spot? Emmeline Winter is pretty.

  • I feel it works best as a middle name,  if only because of how often I say and hear other people "I hate winter!" In January.
  • I love it but I would never actually use it. I don't think it's a depressing name. I happen to love the winter though.
  • For me, whenever someone is named something like May, June, or in this case Winter, I automatically assume that the person was actually born at a time that their name reflects.

I wouldn't use Winter as a first name simply because winter tends to come up negatively in conversation, at least here in the midwest. You can't make it out of the house and back in February around here without hearing someone say "when is winter going to be over" or "this *cuss word* winter is driving me *cuss word* nuts!"
  • It's a huge GP name of mine but in reality I can only advocate for it as a middle name. Everyone hates the actual season in NY and lots of other places so that's a big negative

I don't like Winter as a first name at all, but I think Emmeline is great. Winter definitely works as a middle name.

  • I kind of like it.

FWIW, it's my nephews middle name and he was born on the first day of winter.

  • I love Winter but could never use use it as a first name. Emmeline Winter is lovely.

  • I agree Winter can pass as a middle name.
  • It's on our MN list so obviously I like it a bit :)

  • I mean the person who said "it's not a name it's a season"...well yea but what about all the girls named Summer and Autumn? But I do agree that winter is dark and cold and I get much more positive thoughts where I hear Summer.
  • DD's middle name is Wynter.

  • I think it is a great middle name

I happen to love the winter season for all of you who keep saying everyone hates winter. I hate summer as a season, but wouldnt use that as a marker for my opinion on a name
  • I really like Winter but it's more of a GP. Not sure I could use it as a FN. MNing it would be a great choice.

Winter nn Winnie is a GP name for me. I love it! I also love the season of winter. I see winter, not as cold and dark, but as bright (white snow and bright white clouds) , crisp, warm (sweaters and fireplaces) a time for peace, celebration and family togetherness............I LOVE the feelings that winter represents.
  • I love it and would use it in a heartbeat if it worked better with our last name.
  • I like it.  I know a 35 year old woman named Winter and I think it's cool.  But Probably more suited to someone actually born in the winter.
    Me: 1979 * Husband: 1976 * Little girl: 2010 * Little guy: 2013 * MMC: 2016 * Last baby: EDD 2/11/17!
  • I can see it being kind of adorable and quirky on a little girl, but have a really hard time imagining a grown woman introducing herself as Winter. Emmeline Winter is nice, though!
  • I would put it in the middle name spot. NMS of first name. I feel like MN is a place where you can be adventurous and such. LOL
  • I think it's beautiful. I don't see how it's different from other nature inspired names. I grew up in Japan where there are many variations on seasonal names. It seems poetic to me.
  • I like it way more than Autumn. I think it's decent but they should be born in or around winter.
  • I hate the season so it's a no for me. And I have a hard time envisioning a grown up with this name.
  • The more I think about it the more I like it. At first when I saw this thread I thought it was an odd name to consider, but now I think I'm starting to actually love it. I think that once your LO is here, if you think the name suits her, then you should go for it. Names are easier to question when they aren't attached to someone you know.
  • Surprisingly, I like it. I'm pretty traditional normally. Go for it if you love it.
