Gestational Diabetes Check-In

Re: Gestational Diabetes Check-In

  • @PhoebeJune1984 ah she did not mention that. Thanks for the heads up. I usually eat one, we just didn't have dinner til super late so it was 9 when I checked my sugar. I also realized today that the steroid shots I got yesterday and today are going to make my sugars go crazy the next few days, so I have to be a little more cognizant of what I eat. The nurse in me should have recognized that immediately, but the hormonal pregnant me preferred to throw myself a pity party :)
I was going to ask about that as well (your sugars going up due to the shots), and maybe that being something that could alter your results. I think that pity parties are totally fine. I know that after seeing my results online (they hadn't called me yet to say I failed, but I saw that I had failed), MH and DD had just went and picked up a carton of ice cream. I threw myself a little pity party and then thought "eh....they haven't called me yet, and since I didn't eat a ton of carbs today, and watched my sugar while waiting for the results....I should get some ice cream!" I only had about 1/4c, but it made me feel better. HAHA!

  • I check my sugars 4x a day. Fasting, and 1 hour after meals. The counselor preferred two, but I started testing before I went in, and got in the habit of 1 hour, which she said was fine too.  1 hour they want <140 and 2 hour <120. They didn't tell me about one hour after first bite. I had been doing it after I finished. Whoops.

It seems like whatever I do right now I'm above, even if just by the slightest. I'm already on insulin so I'm just doing my best. I'm starving constantly though, so it's tough.

@kcossey528 I was just going to say that! We literally just discussed using inhaled steroids (breathing issues) causing spikes.

AND it ate the rest of my response... So edited to add back in...

Mine was 4x a day (fasting plus 1 hour after meals), but since I have stayed in my limits for about a month (with only 2 high numbers) they let me go to twice a day (rotating when I take it). My script is still for 4x daily so I have extra if I feel off or think I need to check my fasting number.
I was told fasting 95 or under, and 1 hr after 140 or less (which is when they wanted me to test), or 2 hrs 120 or less (if I can't make my 1 hr time).
  • @WVUPetunia I think the one I grabbed is log cabin... I just know it had the least carbs (7g I believe) and the least calories as well, so that is what I grabbed lol Hopefully it tastes decent! I don't eat much super sugary stuff like syrup (before GD) but I like waffles/pancakes and need some to soak into it, but have always had Aunt Jemima, hungry Jack or something awesome like strawberry syrup!
  • I love my coffee, just one cup but have switched out my regular almond joy coffee creamer for a chocolate protein drink. It's great!
  • I switched out my regular coffee creamer for a chocolate protein drink, it's delicious.
  • Joining the club :( I am mainly upset that apparently I will start getting weekly ultrasounds/non-stress tests. Is this anyone else's experience?

Last pregnancy I didn't have GD but they were concerned about IUGR (small baby) so I had lots of stressful ultrasounds and was induced early. Was really hoping to avoid both the stress and an early induction this time... Boo

Yes this is normal. I start my NST at 32 weeks. I will go twice a week.

@DarkCat Thanks for sharing. I just started my googling on this and see that yeah, it's normal. Do you also get ultrasounds that often?

It's a little inconvenient but I'll manage...I just hate the idea of more reasons to get stressed out or for them to send me in for an induction. I know I need to chill about it, but was hoping not to worry about it this time around. Ah well

When I went in, they didn't say how often I would have to go. The NST was mentioned, but not how often or when they would start. I am waiting until my next OB appointment to find out how often, since I am almost 29 weeks....I would like to be able to prepare when it comes to scheduling.

  • I'm having an ultrasound Monday at 32, and if that looks okay, my next one won't be until 36.  She didn't say I would need NSTs at this point.  She made that sound more like something I would need if my numbers became unstable, or I needed meds.

As of right now I don't have any ultrasounds scheduled but I have a check up appointment in a few days so that might change. I think growth scans are pretty standard.
  • For my first (with GD) I had NST every week and US every other week. My new practice is more medically conservative so I have an US - but I had to push for that. Then I will have another one around 36-37 weeks. I do think the NSTs will start around 33 weeks. I actually enjoy the NSTs. 20 minutes to kind of just be and listen to the baby's heartbeat.

  • I fax my first full week of numbers into the perinatal specialist tomorrow.  All of my numbers are generally great... except my fasting numbers.  She wants them under 90... the lowest they've been was 96... most of them are around 110.  I know I'll get fussed at over my fasting numbers, but I'm controlling my numbers with diet alone, so there's nothing I can really do about my fasting numbers.

So there's this boy. He kinda stole my heart. He calls me "Mom"

  • I am also about to send in my first week of numbers, goof except 2 morning fasting numbers (103, 96) but I h Ave also been I'll which I know pushes up the numbers.

I will try more protein at bedtime and some more exercise.

But I just have to say...I have never eaten so much cheese in one week! I need protein variety (on a grad student budget).
  • @liljabee hard boil some eggs? I do that for a quick protein snack

  • Hi ladies, I failed my 3-hr yesterday so I'm checking in! I'm a big meal planner and am having a hard time finding good meals.  I've been eating low carb since I failed my 1 hr a few weeks ago and I'm running out of ideas.  What are some of your favorite go to dinners? I'm starting to get bored.  I don't remember seeing very many recipes in the thread but please direct me if I missed them! Thanks!!! :)
  • TM14TM14 member
@Brittnic531 sadly I've heard that eating the same meals over and over is one of the safest ways to keep sugars low. Boredom with food sucks. But I usually eat meals with just proteins, and maybe a potato. Small portions of noodles too.

My blood is bad no matter what I do. But this is what's worked best =)

  • @TM14 - Thanks! I was afraid of that... but I just keep telling myself that it's not forever.  I won't get a meter to start testing until tomorrow night at the earliest, so I don't have any idea of how things are going to affect my numbers.
  • Checking in! I am upset at the fact I have GD, doctor told me I would have to deliver early so I'm not excited about that I was hoping for spontaneous labor as opposed to bring induced but whatever is best for baby girl. I will also be having frequent ultrasounds at least I'll get to see her often :)

@lalamilk Doc said you'd have to deliver early because of GD or other factors too? That's one of my worries as well, but my OB said there's no definite reason I'd have to go early with GD.

  • @lalamilk - having a happy healthy baby is most important! I just spoke with my doctor this morning and based on my numbers from the 3 hr, she doesn't anticipate me needing any sort of medication, which would be the main reason why they would induce/ c-section early.  As long as fluid levels and size are ok, she doesn't think there's a reason I can't go into labor naturally.  I hope as you get more information you will feel better about it all!
  • Does anyone know whether there will be restrictions/testing for a little while after baby is here? I know that it's possible to get diabetes afterward. Do they make you regulate your sugars for a few weeks after the birth as well?

So you are at higher risk for Type II diabetes - so since I had it with my first I monitor my A1C every 3 months. So far so good. I did continue to test my blood sugar for a couple of weeks since I had the supplies - but I was totally normal and really quickly - and as I had been on insulin, to move to no insulin and back to eating whatever and being within the normal range, it was awesome.

I was told that I would probably have to test until my 6 week postpartum appointment (maybe less depending on my numbers after baby is born). My numbers are all low, and I am not on any medication for GD (currently).

    *stuck in a box*

I have hope that my diabetes will go away after birth. My A1c was within normal limits and wasn't considered pre-diabetic. I don't plan on testing my blood daily but I will take the 6 week PP sugar drink/test again to be safe.
  • **lurker from August 2016**

I got diagnosed earlier this week, and sent in my numbers for the week (which were all pretty normal except my fasting was slightly high in the 90s usually up to 105) and my doctor still wants to put me on 3 units Levimir every night to bring down my fasting numbers.

My anxiety and stress is through the roof lately what with work being difficult, having so much to do to get ready for baby, and now testing 4x a day/meal planning for gd and now having to give myself insulin every night.

Any tips for a ftm dealing with stress and gd?

  • @allishally13 My only tip after a week of GD, is make your meals as simple as possible. It really takes the guesswork out of everything. Like I make sure to make enough dinner, so there are leftovers for lunch the next day. Then that is one less meal I have to think about making, and I know that my levels wont be high. I focus on proteins and vegetables for the most part. It has just made it a lot easier than thinking "Okay I can have 20 carbs for breakfast, now I need to find 15 carbs for snack, 30 carbs for lunch..." Really, I focus on my proteins/vegetables, during snack I will have my fruit with another protein or a small carb, and never really count any of it.

  • @mandyjulie I have a friend who also had GD that was controlled by diet. She is 6 weeks PP and did a 2 hour tolerance test yesterday, which she passed. They just had her test her fasting a couple times a week the past few weeks since that was her primary issue. She also said her hospital let her have a regular, unrestricted diet immediately after birth, and she didn't follow her diabetic guidelines when she went home. I don't know if that is standard though.
My counselor said I would check "periodically" until I retook the test post partum, however she didn't define periodically. In my own research, I read GD does place us at higher risk for developing type 2 within 10 years, so we should monitor our A1C annually at minimum. Where I work we do bloodwork every year for lower premiums and that is part of the work up. I think a lot of places are starting to do this! I may try and stick with this diet for a while. I was overweight to begin with, and I've noticed my steady gain has plateaued. I also feel better since I'm more conscious of what I eat and make better choices. I figure it may help me get back into shape!
  • @PhoebeJune1984 thank you!! I did my first insulin injection tonight, and I don't know why I was getting so stressed out. It was no big deal, and I used to give myself allergy shots, so no idea why this freaked me out. I haven't seen the dietician yet, so I think I was just overwhelmed trying to figure this all out. But definitely going to start making meals that have leftovers to make it all easier!!

Feeling so much better right now :)

  • Is the glucose test PP, standard? My doctor didn't mention it today.  I meet with the diabetes counselor on Monday who will shed more light, I'm sure.
  • I'm frustrated.  My numbers were borderline when I was diagnosed, so the hope was that I wouldn't need meds.  I got put on Metformin on Monday because there were some numbers here and there that she was unhappy with, and I still have some crappy numbers.  I know they say it can get worse as pregnancy goes on, but this blows.  I feel like I can't do anything right with it! /whining

  • @DominiqueU That looks great! Will have to try that.

For better scrambled eggs, we have done this for a while -- Gordon Ramsay recipe. Except I only use the eggs and butter, and a little less butter at that. Really easy, just start with eggs in a cold pan on low heat; never let them get too hot. So delicious https://www.food.com/recipe/sublime-scrambled-eggs-by-gordon-ramsay-423955?mode=us&st=true&scaleto=2

  • So I was diagnosed with GD a few weeks ago and literally failed the 3-hour test by 1 point....but after testing sugar for the first few days, I quickly realized that I was in fact too high. I am now on 10 units of insulin morning and night despite the fact that i drastically changed my diet and have even lost 5 pounds because of it. The nurses that monitor the diabetic patients at my hospital said that sometimes it is all based on hormones and no matter how many dietary changes are made, some women still need meds. I also had a consult with the perinatologist who told me that they would not deliver me any earlier if everything stays stable because babies of diabetic moms have slower lung maturation which could result in a NICU stay. I'm currently scheduled for a c-section at 39 weeks. All I can say is I'm so sick of cheese, eggs, and nuts!
  • @lmp3251@aol.com

I hear ya on the eggs, cheese, and nuts. It's a struggle to find new foods that don't mess with everything.

With GD, it's all up to your body. Sometimes diet works, sometimes it doesn't. Luckily, doctors know what to do to help us control it so it doesn't affect our babies too much.

Glitch in the system, won't post my comment! I give up.

  • @lmp3251@aol.com @DominiqueU I was kind of in the same boat with egg, cheese and nuts. But then I found a few things to mix it up:
*Toast with sliced tomato on top, and a little salt and pepper
*Zucchini spears grilled on the BBQ
    *Sweet potato fries
*Zucchini noodles with spaghetti sauce and ground beef (instead of spaghetti noodles)
    *Cucumber sandwiches
*Apple with fresh ground PB (we get it at the store instead of buying stuff like JIF/Skippy)
*Mini bell peppers (I will eat them raw during snack, or with a little bit of hummus, or chopped up with my eggs)
*Ground beef in stuffed bell peppers, with a little shredded cheese and some salsa on top
    *Toast with PB
*Kodiak brand protein pancake (just one, but they are filling!) with sugar free syrup or PB on top
*Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar added)
*Rainbow Light Protein Energizer protein powder, with a packed of Fresh Start smoothie mix from Costco (it has blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, spinach and kale in it)
    *Asparagus BBQed
*Chopped chicken breast or tenders, mixed with cut of avocado and a little bit of salsa or Sirarcha

My easiest thing has been chicken. Big bags of chicken tenders and chicken thighs from Costco. I have been portioning them into ziploc bags with enough to feed us dinner, plus a little extra for lunch the next day. Then I put them in the freezer so they are easy to grab the night before, and put in the fridge to start thawing. In the morning, I toss in some easy marinade, and some seasoning, and it marinades until I get home from work....then I just pop it on the grill. It does get boring sometimes, eating them in the same form, so sometimes I will chop it up after and mix it in with a dinner salad, or slice it and put it in a tortilla with some black beans/salsa/cheese.

Even with a lot of different ideas, it does get boring though. All I want is a mint Oreo milkshake......
