Gestational Diabetes Check-In

I've seen this on other boards, but I don't see it here...  Anyone in this unfortunate club with me?  I failed the 1 hour last week, then the 3 hour yesterday, so she has diagnosed me with mild GD.  I have to pick up my testing supplies after work and test 4x a day (first thing in the morning and an hour after each meal) and log foods, but I don't require insulin at this point (and hopefully won't).  They couldn't get me in for education until May 2, so it's kind of a guessing game for me until then.

Right now, I just feel like crying because I feel like my body is just awful at pregnancy.  I had 2 months of bedrest and pre-term labor with my son, then a miscarriage the pregnancy after him, and now GD with this one (after already having "irritable uterus" contractions with this one and being on Procardia).  I'm glad I only wanted two kids!

Re: Gestational Diabetes Check-In

  • I don't have GD, but you may want to start at diabetes.org from the American Diabetic Association, it's a general education website with meal planning etc.

    https://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/gestational/

Maybe this will at least make you more comfortable with terminology, and skills.

I have it. I was diagnosed early because of sugars in my urine and other issues it causes. I'm on insulin now and my numbers still aren't perfect. It's not an exact science and it is hard.

It's in no way our faults. Anybody can get it! There are days all I want to do is cry, but remember it should go away after your baby is born.

Eating right is hard. I still nibble on chocolate here and there, just enough to help my cravings. It sucks because we should be eating whatever we want, but sadly we can't.

  • I failed my 3 hour too. Kind of caught me off guard, but we will work through it. I haven't had my teaching yet, and haven't heard when I will. My home health nurse that does my 17p shots gave me some general guidelines to go off of. I then took to Pinterest for some blogs and meal plans, which has helped immensely. went to walgreens and picked up a cheap monitoring system to keep track until I go in. The hardest part for me is eating every 2-3 hours. I feel like I have to constantly eat!
I understand your frustrations. The first day or too I was upset, now I've kind of gotten used to it, and actually feel it may help me to be a little healthier. We will get through this!
  • Hi, I was diagnosed with GD at 15 weeks. My midwife scheduled the test at 8 weeks but I was really scared of the drink so I delayed it until 2nd tri. So I might have had it my whole pregnancy. Anyways, I'm currently 27 weeks (28 on Friday) and at this point I can barely tolerate bread or starches. I'm diet controlled for my meals but use 36 units of insulin to control my fasting numbers.

My OB wants my fasting to be under 90 and 120 for one hour after eating. My advice would be to do as much research as you can on the subject. Get a good meal plan for groceries. If you want a natural birth (no induction or meds) that is possible however you really need a supportive OB and be knowledge of the risks of going past a certain post. GD gives you some risks like a bigger baby getting stuck, placenta calcification, unstable blood sugars in baby after birth. Personally, I will weigh the pros and cons and decide if I will allow them to induce me at 39 or give it until 40. I will not go past 40 because I worry about stillbirth.
  • Hello, I failed my 3hr last Thursday but i still haven't seen a counselor or been given any directions so I've just been working off diabetes websites. I'm 29 +1 weeks today. I didn't have GD with my first daughter and she was in the +90% for weight and height at birth my doctor allowed me to go until 41 weeks before she was going to induce...luckily my daughter heard the warning and i went into labor on the day I was to be induced. Though I'm not opposed to being induced I hope this little girl comes on her own too.
  • I'm glad this thread was created. I just found out I failed my 1 hour test and will take the 3 hour test in the next few days. This will be a great resource to eat healthier even if I pass the 3 hour test. Right now I'm feeling very unhappy about myself about failing the 1 hour test. Hopefully the feeling will pass.
    Anniversary
  • I was sent for a one hour challenge test at my first prenatal appointment, which I failed miserably (191). My OB referred me to the diabetic nurses at the perinatal center and I was placed on Levemir right before Christmas. I was terrified at the thought of having to give myself a shot everyday, but once I did it the first time I realized it wasn't bad at all. So far only my fasting sugars are the issue so I have been able to manage them with the Levemir and haven't had to add any additional medications. Don't beat yourself up over this since I was told that the pregnancy hormones are responsible for it. Hopefully you will be able to control it with dietary modifications. Best of luck! I'm rooting for you
  • I failed the 1 hour and then took the 3 hour and passed yesterday. I fasted for both even though you only need to fast for the 3 hour and I really have to say I think the test is dumb.... Don't get down on yourself if you do end up failing one or both. Most of my friends who have indeed got GD do not have it post pregnancy.

While this is very much true, I do want to point out the very high correlation they have now found between having GD, and developing type 2 diabetes later (My dietician/nutritionist said average is approximately 10 years and they suggest have A1C checked yearly after having GD).
Just some food for thought.

Anyway, I find myself here with you lovely ladies. Failed the 1 hour by a few points, and my 3 hour was weird... My fasting was perfect, 1 hour after drinking that crap my number was about 50 points below the accepted cut off, at 2 hours it was 40 above the accepted cut off, and 3 hours it was about back to normal, but still just slightly elevated. Until yesterday I was testing 4 times a day, but was allowed to cut back to 2 times a day (and additional if I feel out of my norm). No insulin or anything, and as long as I am moving around after eating (even just walking around the house) and have some water, I have so far been very lucky that it stays in my "safe" ranges.
Can we talk about that for a minute? I wonder what goes into those numbers? How are they decided? Because my top accepted number for 1 hour after eating seems to be more than everyone else I have talked too... Also the amount of/range of carbs I am allowed per meal/per day seems higher. Having to do with the results maybe? That part confuses me.
Little man has been measuring big for some time (since around 9-12 weeks) falling into the 97th percentile now. The plan so far is just for me to keep my numbers low like they are, and keep moving to keep us healthy and from gaining too much. I had an additional growth ultrasound on Tuesday, and another between 32-36 weeks (depending on how we look when we go in). I was told that ultrasound will be the deciding factor to induce (before our already agreed upon induction if I hit 40 weeks and 1 day plan) or not. I am really hoping to avoid that!
  • I just got my 1hr results yesterday and failed by 4pts. I go back Monday for the 3hr testing. holly142  thank you for sharing that chart!

  • GD is something I've been concerned about. I have not been diagnosed but took the 1 hr test 2 weeks ago. How quickly did you all receive notice from your doctor that you had it? Since I haven't gotten a call I'm wondering if I passed or will this be something we discuss at my next appointment in 2 weeks?
  • @kgrgreen - with DD I got a call the next day that I failed. This time, I found out 3 days later at my 28 week app.
  • kgrgreen  My office told me results come back in a week and they would call me if I failed and that I wouldn't hear from them if I passed and they would go over my results at my next appt. I failed my 1hr that I took last Thursday and they called me yesterday to tell me I failed and have to take the 3hr on Monday. If you haven't heard from them I bet you passed. :)

  • Thank you @holly142 & @lynna813 ! I will go with the "no news is good news" for now  :)
  • I took the one hour this morning and got the call this afternoon: cut off 130, I was at 161. Baby has been measuring big the entire pregnancy  A few of my coworkers said that seemed totally fine, and I probably wouldn't fail my three hour but that seems high to me?? What was everyone's 1-hour level? And did you pass or fail your three?
  • Hello all! So I had GD with my DD and so they tested me at 17 weeks for this pregnancy. No surprise - I have it again. It is manageable but like @TM14 said - it is hard.

The good news? My sugars were back to normal the day after I delivered my DD. Due to the risk of type 2 diabetes I track my A1C pretty carefully but 3 years in it is still in the normal range and I am a fluffy gal.

This pregnancy I am struggling more for several reasons. 1. Harder to eat well and exercise and get the proper amount of sleep with a toddler. 2. My fasting numbers are just horrible. Even with insulin. I am having the same creep up just as I did in my first pregnancy but it is just faster than that one. Very discouraging to do everything right and still see the "wrong results".

I had a horrible endo appt today. Despite not asking what I was eating ever, the endo said I should be eating smaller meals as my BMI is still high. Umm yeah - pregnancy really isn't the best time to start a diet and lose those pesky pre-pregnancy pounds. Oh - and I have gained 4 pounds total so far this pregnancy at 28 weeks.  I have decided he was just a douche.

For those who are curious about levels: my fasting is to be under 95 and my 1 hour is to be under 140. This is totally different (new practice) from my first pregnancy and almost everything the nutritionist told me this go around was almost the complete opposite of my first pregnancy. So I am trying to find the middle ground. Eat what is healthy, exercise and try not to beat myself up over something that is some days just out of my control.

@brielle330 my 1-hr level was 137 so by my midwife's office standard of 140 i passed but at my next appointment i had glucose in my urine so she wanted me to do the 3-hr; which i failed.
  • Does anyone have a low carb or carb free pancake recipe? Getting really sick of scrambled eggs for breakfast.
  • @DarkCat have you tried banana pancakes? I'm not sure what the carb count is, but here is a link for s recipe https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-2-ingredient-banana-pancakes-cooking-lessons-from-the-kitchn-218658
  • I can't eat bananas. It's actually one of the few fruits that is very high in carbs (one banana=23 carbs) and I'm suppose to avoid fruit in the mornings. It spikes blood sugar. But thank you for trying :)

  • @DarkCat I googled low carb pancakes and most of the responses include recipes based in almond flour - I'm not sure of the carb counts but it may be worth looking into. Also, I've made pancakes with coconut flour and chia seeds that turned out good except for a difference in textures.
  • Looks like I'm checking in too.  I took the one-hour last week and "just barely failed it", so I was sent to take the three hour on Wednesday.  Fasting and 1 hour were okay... 2 hour and 3 hour were... well... definitely not okay.  The OBGYN set me an appointment to see a high-risk doctor for nutritional counseling.  I went through this with DS, and the doctor simply had me do a 2,000 calorie diet, but I'm not sure what this doctor will require.  I do know that I've been instructed to use the glucometer when I first wake up in the morning and 2 hours after each meal.

So there's this boy. He kinda stole my heart. He calls me "Mom"

Not pancakes but I would eat a slice of 100% whole wheat toast, which was around 8g carbs and then id pack on about a tablespoon of Peanut butter (8g carbs) and eat it with my coffee. I dont know if that sounds appealing at all, but it mixes it up from eating eggs all the time and kind of tricked my brain into thinking I was eating something sweet. Plus the peanut butter filled me up for a couple hours.

What brand only has 8 carbs per slice? My whole wheat toast was 22 carbs per slice :(
  • @DarkCat when I had GD with my son (going for the 3hr shortly...I'm sure I'll have it again lol) I found an english muffin that was low carb and like pp said pack on the peanut butter or make an egg sandwich on it. It was a normal brand too that I found with all the other English muffins - might be worth looking for :)

What @WVUPetunia  said.  Sara Lee has 2 slices of wheat bread for 19 grams of carbs and then 5 grams of fiber, which leaves you with 14 grams for two, 7 per.

Then skippy PB is actually only 6g carbs per 2 tablespoons, minus 2 g of fiber! :)  Good stuff.

Wait, we get to subtract carbs for fiber??  I wish I didn't have to wait so long for my education.  I feel like I'm just completely guessing and in the dark.  Fortunately, I see my doctor again Tuesday, so maybe she can give me a little more direction than her assistant did on the phone...

  • How is everyone doing, and how are your numbers? Any foods your struggling with or would like some help trying to replace?

Always interested in what everyone is told as far as counts/subtracting etc. I was told only subtract fiber if it was 5g or more. The new nutritionist/dietician for where my mom works told them can't subtract fiber. The old one for there told them  subtract fiber AND protein. My grandma was told subtract nothing. So always interesting to me

On the bread talk, Aunt Millie's whole grain white bread only has 10g of carbs for one piece with 2.5g fiber (the package has it listed for to pieces 20g and 5. So depending on how you were told to count, may be less).

Also corn tortillas (especially yellow corn) are usually about half the carbs as others.
I have 6in Mission yellow corn tortillas  (that say gluten free) that are 13g carbs, 2 fiber for 1 shell.
Old El Paso 6in flour tortillas are 2 shells for 24 carbs.
Making a million variations of tacos etc or doing them similar to an open faced grilled cheese (then folding it over on it's self) sometimes adding pepperoni or something, usually makes a really filling meal. Depending on what's in it, we either use Taco sauce and sour cream to dip it in or sometimes pizza sauce.

Have to give props to my DH who has been a rockstar of scouring YouTube and finding all kinds of cool low carb recipes and substitutions for our normal foods. So I suggest that if you have some time!

Yeah!  I had GD about 6 years ago with my first (not with my second or with this baby) but I remember a lot from it.  From what I can remember, since your body doesn't digest fiber like the other carbs, you can subtract it from the total carbs to get the "net carbs".  Fiber is your friend.
    https://healthyeating.sfgate.com/subtract-dietary-fiber-carb-count-11020.html

You can also read up on gylcemic index, which also plays a role in the diabetic world.

  • For tacos I bought low carb tortilla (13 carbs) and I use lean turkey instead of beef, no fat refried beans, low fat sour cream, cilantro and avocado. I had two tacos and sugar free jello cup for dinner and got 90 after one hour!
  • I'm going for my test (a 2 hour to start) tomorrow but I had GD last time I'm mentally preparing. Last time my 1 hour was 132 but I failed two draws of the 3 hour by a few pounts.

I hate artificial sweeteners but liked the carb smart ice cream bars that reminded me of pudding pops after a few weeks without real sugar. I ate a slice of ezekiel bread with 2 eggs almost every morning and stocked my purse with individual peanut butter servings, almomds, a boiled eggs.

My favorite dinners were salads and broth soups with one serving or noodles or rice in them. I also got into mashed cauliflower and roasted carrots to replace potatoes.
  • Here is what the nutritionist gave me at my appointment today.

Pregnancy Brain + GD +  insomnia = no capacity to come up with meal plans. I find myself zoning out in the pantry or in front of the fridge for 5 minutes 5 times a day. I don't want to learn how to eat at at this point, a weekly meal plan will do.  What counts as a starch again...  :#;)
  • 15 grams of carbs is 1 starch
  • I asked my doctor about subtracting the fiber out to get net carbs and she said that is only if you are doing Weight Watchers or something like that. She said things high in fiber are good to eat, but they still count towards your carb limits.
