Proud Momma

What is something you are proud of today? Doesn't have to be child related.

For or me its, Atlas rolled over for the first time.

  • @willkc You aren't. Last week our little dude was clocking 5 hours consistentlyrics for his first nighttime stretch. Then I got excited because he did a 7 hour stretch. Sadly...we've regressed and the past 3 nights it's been 2-3 hours. What gives, little man?

I'm proud of how we are breastfeeding in public! The weather has been great, so we've been going for long walks and sitting down at cafes with outdoor seating. So far we've nursed on park benches a couple of times, and at a crowded cafe terrace yesterday.

We are lucky to live in a place where people are laid-back about breastfeeding, so that helps.
  • @willkc I'm in the same boat. Usually I can squeak about 4hrs out the first stretch, but then it's every 2-3hrs after that. Unfortunately, DD1 did this until she was about a year old!  :o It's hard as a FTM, but eventually it just became "normal".

  • Is anyone getting their breastfed lo to sleep 8+ hours?  I read that breastmilk metabolizes faster so breasted babies are slower to sleep through the night, and was wondering if any of the moms getting full nights are ebf?  If so, any tips?  My little girl won't sleep more than 5 hours (we've gotten to 6 twice...).

  • Our little one is 8 wks and has slept up to 9 hrs one night. How long is your LO sleeping during the day? I make sure Ellie doesn't sleep more than 2- 2 1/2 hrs during her naps. That really helped her. I also try to give her a late night snack. That seems to fill her up enough.

I will ill have to say though... I'm so engorged when she sleeps that long. The long nights sleep comes at a price!!
  • @meg+on+the+DL she maybe takes one 2-3 hour nap during the day. Usually just short 30-60 minute naps here and there. At night she ALWAYS sleeps for 4-5 hours, wakes, then sleeps another 3. At least she's consistent I guess, but would like to make that first stretch longer. My husband does the middle of the night feeding with pumped milk so I can definitely relate to the engorgement!

  • @sheslikeasunburn my LO is 8 weeks old and has been sleeping an average of 7 hours straight every night and she's breastfed. I don't know that we do anything unusual or different but I'd be happy to share our nightly routine.

At 8:30 we take her up to bed and get her ready for the night. I get her undressed and change her diaper if it's at all dirty (she typically doesn't want it changed during the night so I like it to be dry when I put her down so I can hopefully get a full night out of it). Then I put her in her sleep sack and get her swaddled nice and tight. She gets her vitamin d and then I pick her up and rock her while DH reads a story. If she's not going down, I'll nurse her and then she typically falls asleep. If not, I try to put her down while drowsy. I make sure the lights are really low the whole time and before we leave the room we turn them off completely and turn on a box fan. It keeps her cool and gives her some white noise. That's honestly all we do and it works 99% of the time
  • @sheslikeasunburn My LO is 10.5 weeks and exclusively BF and he sleeps anywhere from 8-11 hours at night before waking to nurse. He has been doing that for about 6 weeks now. I honestly don't think it's anything I'm doing, I think I just hit the baby jackpot this time. I do the exact same things with him that I did with DS1 and while he was also a good sleeper I didn't get stretches >6-8 hours like this until DS1 was 5 or 6 months old.

But our routine: bathtime at 730, without fail. If he's napping, too bad. We wake him up and put him into the bath with DS1 bc ain't nobody got time for two separate baths lol Then lotion, pjs, swaddleme sack (now with arms out bc he's rolling to side) and nursing/story time with DS1. When he finishes nursing, I put him into the arms reach co-sleeper and turn out the lights. He goes to sleep. Again, baby jackpot. He wakes up somewhere between 4-6 am. If it's on the early side around 4, I usually "hit the snooze" with a pacifier and he often goes back to sleep for another hour or two before demanding to eat.

@sheslikeasunburn Honestly, at this age, it rarely has anything to do with what the parents are doing and is more about the baby's personality/needs. Sounds like your babe isn't doing too bad, all things considered.

ETA: I do agree with lights down, low stimulation, but aside from that, there's no real solution sometimes, unfortunately.

  • Like what @VitaLuna said, we leave the lights off in the living room before we take her upstairs and try to keep the noise level low. Also not too much bouncing or activity like tummy time unless I'm burping her on her tummy. It gets her riled up and tired at the same time which leads to a super cranky baby
  • DD was a great BF sleeper. She alept 6 hours our first night home and was sleeping 10-12 hours at a month old. Yes I know this is not the norm and I would be super engorged in the morning.
DS usually sleeps 4-5 hours and then is up every 2. Sometimes he just wants to be held. He has had a couple 7 hour nights which were amazing.

My success is that DS has gone nipple shield free for 2 weeks now! It's so much easier and less messy now. We are battling thrush(so it's pretty painful at times for me). However I nursed DD for 10 months and could never break her of the shield so I consider this a huge win
  • @baya5 Congrats! My DD1 was early and small and couldn't latch, so we used a shield. When she finally started nursing without it, it changed everything! I finally felt like I could go out, I was less stressed, didn't dread feeding, etc.

@baya5 that's awesome! I've tried to wean my LO off the shield and was told by lactation consultant that she isn't pushing tongue forward and is therefore not ready. Eventually I would like too. Must be so much easier!

This is my girl EXACTLY! We had our 2 month appt. today and my pediatrician said going ahead and transitioning out of our room into hers will help her sleep better and longer. So we will be trying that soon along with a normal bedtime routine.
  • I know I'm a few days late to this post. Loved reading everyone's proud moments and bf/sleeping advice.
We are so happy our little girl rolled over at 7w6d. We are pumped! She does it all the time now! Proud mama for her. Proud of me today for showering, blow drying and straightening my hair with her sleeping away in the bathroom with me! :)
