@mrszoess pickles are amazing, but cukes taste like watery sadness. I can't do sweet or bread and butter pickles. I need dill, garlic, tons of vinegar, and maybe a touch of spicy pepper. Ballpark pickles that have been sitting in their vat for god knows how long are the best.
Trying to to come up with something interesting about myself always makes me feel like I am super boring lol. I am an introvert's introvert. My very favorite days have the least human interaction. My husband owes me a "ladycation" (since he got to do mancation to Vegas a few months back) and I've decided I'm booking a hotel room with an in-room jacuzzi, getting sushi carry out, and packing five or six new books. This needs to wait until I'm no longer pregnant, because I want my jacuzzi water hot and sashimi in all its raw glory. I can't wait.
@SuperNerd42@mrszoessI love pickles too. My maiden named rhymed with Pickle and dumb kids used to call me pickle (mmmk). I'm with you on sweet and butter pickles, YUCK. I like pickled eggs too. I just marinated my chicken in the leftover pickle juice I had. Satisfied :d
I spent 100 days on a ship for my semester abroad program (Semester at Sea). We completely circled the globe. Got to meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Fidel Castro. Nothing I do will ever compete with that on the adventure scale!
I used to dance competitively in high school. I tried out for the Orlando Magic dance team but screwed up on the final round to get to the public audition I tripped after doing a trick during my solo and squeaked (as well as made a face). The worst thing you could do is SHOW your mistake with a reaction. Doh! I regretted not trying again the next year. We moved to CO and then I got pregnant (twice). I was hoping to give that whole professional dancer thing a try before I hit 30. I was dieting, exercising, and practicing those dance skills again. I was planning to try out for the Broncos Cheerleaders this season but we had a surprise baby. Oh well
Two interesting things about me: 1. I was a nationally ranked athlete. Which is especially interesting because I am the laziest person ever! 2. I have a deep and irrational fear of needles. You come at me with a needle and I will start having a panic attack and break out in hives. This has been especially fun since getting pregnant because I have to have blood drawn every month. Luckily the nurse at my OB/GYN is sweet and ignores the fact that I am a crying shaking mess.
I was a dancer for the NHL team the Pittsburgh Penguins. They don't have them anymore, now they're just silly "ice girls" who skate and sweep the ice on breaks. I loved it for the 2 years I did it while in college!
I posted this in the never have I ever but I'm gonna use it again!
I was homeschooled all the way up until college and I loved it. I would totally do that with my kids too except we live in an area known for its schools and pay a tonnnnn of taxes each year to the school district so it seems kinda silly not to use them! But I'll probably leave the decision up to my kids like my parents did.
Okay. There are more things about me that are eccentric/odd than "interesting." If you were to meet me in person you probably would not guess that this is the case. I think it's because I'm a pretty boring person who had some strange experiences growing up.
1. I have been bitten by a porcupine. 2. I have been bitten by a slow loris. 3. At one point, I owned 47 mice (I sucked at telling the males and females apart and, well, that's what happens). One of them got out and lived on old Halloween candy in my closet for a good year or two. I used to shower in the evening and I would sometimes wake up to the mouse drinking/licking water out of my hair in the middle of the night. Fortunately, I am not at all bothered by mice. 4. I was a college cheerleader. Had to throw a normal one in there.
I am a member of a professional music fraternity (Sigma Alpha Iota). I had some of the best times of my life with my sisters at our little college in the mountains.
Apparently, this is a UO here, but I love sweet pickles no sour ones for me!
My ex-husband (father of 15 yo DD) is my very best friend since about 2nd grade. He's an only child and always wanted to do the "right thing". We got married, had our daughter while he was in the Air Force and when she was about three we split up. I knew him so well that I knew about a year before our split that he was gay and was probably going to stay with me forever and not truly be happy. I woke up one day and said to him that this was not "him" and I wanted us both to be happy. We split up, never fought over custody, never over child support. I actually hooked him up with his partner and they've been together for about 11 years now. We all vacation together, do holidays at each other's houses and they are the Godfathers to my DS from my relationship afterward. I can't imagine my life without them!
A more "fun" thing is I used to perform in cabaret shows at the local gay/alternative club back home in MA. It was hosted by a big old drag queen and it was a blast. I very much miss the stage and performing!
I was born in Japan. I'm the pickiest eater I know. I hate the feeling of cotton balls and hate the sound of crunchy snow (the kind that happens when it's really cold). I'm honest to a fault. I was in the Army. I'm currently employed as an RN.
I had a private meeting with Pope Francis and have dinners once a year with bishops from all over the world. My husband's job has its fun perks.
I am a really sweet person with a personality that can cut like a knife. My snark and humor can easily come across as being nasty and rude if you don't know me. I only pull the snark when I know someone has a similar personality because of this.
I can't stand tomatoes and won't eat anything that touched sour cream or guacamole, which is sad because I love Mexican food.
I feel like I'm pretty boring compared to all you ladies.
I was on a wrestling team when I was younger. I wanted to be just like my brother, but actually did really good at it. I went to the state championships two years in a row. I made so many little boys cry because I beat them but my dad made me quit when I "developed"
The only thing I won't eat are olives. Other than that, I will eat everything and anything. Especially if it's dipped in chocolate.
I worked veterinary medicine for the better part of 6 years, mostly exotics, so I've seen some pretty weird shit. One of my favorites was taking x-rays of and assisting in surgery on a puffer fish.
DH and I met completely by chance when we were both members of a huge internet forum called Gen[M]ay and it was a Seattle area get together. The forums were 99% male and being one of the few female regulars I was convinced that they were going to gang rape me. Suddenly, this guy named "f00ker" said he'd protect me from the sweaty, neck-beard basement trolls. I laughed so hard at a guy named f00ker claiming he was going to protect me. I went to the meet. Two years later we were married, and we'll be celebrating our 10 year anniversary in December.
I have had a relatively boring life so mine is kinda lame.
My DH and I were high school sweethearts, but our story sounds like a cheesy teenage rom-com. I was painfully awkward and he was a baseball and basketball player and fairly well-liked. I crushed on him pretty hard since freshmen year even though he teased me relentlessly, including mooning me in class and asking me to join him in the bell tower (we went to an old private high school and that's supposedly where all the couples went to make out during school). It wasn't until junior year that our social circles would finally overlap and one day he was in a car full of friends dropping me off after school. He asked to come in for something to drink and I don't know how but I worked up the nerve to kiss him. We ended up getting voted "cutest couple" for senior superlatives and have been together now for 15 years, 4 married. Lame, I know, but I didn't have a good one!
Two semi-interesting things about me; 1. I used to be really into heavy weight training for about five years, I've slowed down a little since the BFP. 2. I had a Septorhinoplasty surgery exactly 10 months ago. Bone spur ground down, deviated septum aligned, and cartilage removed; had my nose broken in three places for this because my septum was so messed up. My face swelled to about four times its normal size.
@ashleyp625 I'm the same way, always have been! My Mom always gives me separate plates for things and my MIL bought me Tupperware divided dishes! Haha my family teases me about it ALL the time!!
@jillianpardo We do too, our house constantly has music on of some sort but musicals are the go to, my FI was never introduced to them before me and well now he's pretty well versed in Showtunes! Lol And yes I wouldn't want my family any other way and it's been pretty awesome for my kids to grow up that way.
I'm absolutely loving everyone's stories of how they met their SO's!
1. Me and DH are in the process to start fostering/adopt a little boy of 2 yrs, 4 months old. I've taken care of him since he was 3 days old at the baby home that I work at here in Tanzania. We were not necessarily planning to get KU at the same time but now I'm just hoping he can be home with us BEFORE the baby arrives for a little time with just him, even though I'm so lucky to have already had so much bonding time with him. A huge plus is he LOVES helping with the little babies at the baby home so I think he'll be a great big brother.
2. The big hold up on getting him HOME is that we are building our house. We currently live in a single room (with an outhouse) and, rightfully so, social welfare won't approve him to come into our home until he has a bedroom. Our new house is approx $3,000 usd away from being finished. (Welcome to Tanzanian where you can build a HOUSE (2bd-1bath) for about $5,000 usd! -with room to expand)
@kmolleltz I LOVE that!! I have always always always wanted to adopt! "Unfortunately" there are virtually no babies up for adoption in Europe and good ol US of A decided ours would be an international adoption, so no go there. DH spends a lot of time in Africa for work (will actually be in Tanzania tomorrow, I believe) so I've been dreaming about adopting an African baby even though we are the two whitest people on the planet. Unfortunately adopting internationally is a HUGE hassle and expense. If we ever have to move to Africa I want to do exactly what you're doing!!
@ladyshark311 Thanks to pregnancy hormones I basically get teary eyed, if not totally crying, whenever I think about finally bringing him home. haha
@book&icecream international adoption is for sure a HUGE expense if you don't already live in said country. We're fortunate that our adoption here is considered local (due to the amount of time I've lived here/DH being Tanzanian) and so really our only costs will be lawyer fees (which are small here comparably).
Love reading all of these. 1. My husband was my 2nd boyfriend, we were engaged when I was 17 and married at 19. 2. I have $0 student debt (really proud of that one) 3. Ive been bitten by a rattlesnake 4. We found out when trying to have #2 that I have 3 clotting disorders. Which contributed to why I survived my liver being cut in half in a car accident when I was 9. The drs at the time couldn't explain how I didnt bleed out before help got to us (it was before evey one had a cell phone and we were on the side of the road for nearly 2 hours before EMS got there) and how once i did get a cat scan the majority of the bleeding had stopped.
When I was 20, I went swimming and jumped off a rope. The second time wasn't successful. I shattered both sides of my right ankle. I had to have a 12 hole titanium plate to repair my leg and ankle.
My grandparents raised my brother and me. I feel lIke because of this I am "old fashioned" unlike most other near thirty years old. Also I feel like I should have been born a decade or two earlier.
I don't have anything exciting to contribute but here are a couple of things about me:
1) I have a huge obsession with all and anything Shakespeare and I'm a big nerd about it. I don't usually say it to people in conversation because they often think I'm being snooty. I have several of his lines tattooed on me and I'm getting more. 2. I did a study abroad in England when I was an undergrad in college and it was incredible. 3. DH is an identical twin and his brother and wife just had their first baby. The OB said that since they're identical twins and come from the same sperm, then technically the cousins (our DD and their son) are also brother and sister in a weird, twisted, fucked up sort of twin way. I'm still wrapping my mind around that. 4. I curse a lot. I've tried to cut down but I fail miserably.
@rozANDbenSINCE2001 my husband and I are high school sweethearts too! I actually went to an all girls school and he went to public school but we met when I was a sophomore and he was a senior. So many awful prom throwback pictures to look back on haha
Love this thread - the October board is an interesting bunch!
I'm obsessed with The Beatles and Paul McCartney. I have a Strawberry Fields Forever tattoo on my foot, and McCartney's Hofner bass tattooed on my back. At one of his shows (I've seen 15 so far, but my 16th is coming up this summer) six years ago, he called me on stage and signed my bass tattoo! (And, yeah, I got that signature inked on as well).
It was unreal. Sometimes I still can't believe it really happened. Thank God for YouTube videos.
@F47 Whaaaaaaaat?! That is so amazing! DH is a huge Beatles fan and got me into them in high school! We love going to see cover bands in the park during the summer-it's one of our fave things. We also considered giving our kids Beatles themed names like Lucy and Penny, but went a whole different way
@scostel2 Omg, the throwback pictures are the best! It's like, daaaaang, we were SO awkward! Hahahah
@rozANDbenSINCE2001 and @scostel2 Add us to the club! We met when I was a freshman and he transferred into the band as a junior. I did NOT like him, but actually got to know him as a sophomore. He asked me to homecoming through a friend since he was so nervous, and the rest is history! I love that we've known each other so long and have so much shared history. And yes, the early pics are pretty great
@kmolleltz That is awesome! Hope you get to bring your little boy home soon!
@michi1382 - So interesting about the twin/cousin/sibling thing. That makes total sense!
This is fun! My interesting story: I am the first person in my family to graduate college. BUT... My mom graduated a year behind me. She went back to college after I did, and we actually went to the same school (but majored in totally separate things.) Each year, my school gave a "student of the year award" to one junior or senior in every department..... Kinda like the valedictorian of your particular major. In my senior year, my mom and I both got the award for our departments. We got to attend the same award ceremony and reception and take pictures. It was exciting!
Re: Tell me something good...
its gotten worse since I got pregnant too lol
