How big of a deal are initials?

so our last name begins with an S and we have been trying to come up with a name for our little girl who is due in 2 weeks.
How big of an issue would it be to name her something beginning with a B? We talked about the name Brielle today. My hubby is worried she would get teased because her initials would be BS...should we avoid B names?
Growing up my initials spelt JAR but I don't remember ever discussing them with friends or being made fun of because of my initials. Of course jar is different than bs...
Thanks for your opinion!

Re: How big of a deal are initials?

  • I wouldn't worry about that too much. I knew quite a few people with the initials BS growing up and none of us really cared. One dumb kid in a blue moon may bring it up, but there are definitely worse initial combos.

I don't think it is a big deal. My kids have the initials NAM, EMP, and IMP and I wouldn't think twice about any of it.

  • @Eko14 my dh's initials are NAM.  :) Our kids are ARC, BJC, and NJM so far. A lot of people asked me if I was really going to give ds the initials BJ but I don't feel it will be a huge deal.
  • Thanks ladies. I didn't think it would be a big deal either. I'll show hubby your responses and hopefully we can figure out her name
  • Our last name begins with an S and unfortunately we fell in love with the name Alexandra Scarlett. Luckily, we had a baby boy (Isaac Ryan) so we avoided the initials ASS.

  • Haha! I never even thought about initials with my first 2 daughters. Their initials are kns and ajs
  • Will she have a middle name? If so, usually initials are used all 3 together. I can't think of any time I've used just me first & last initials together without my middle initial.

  • Good point! Yes she will have a middle name.
  • I had a teacher in middle school who used to call kids by their first and last initials. There were two kids in my class with initials JC who, for some reason, got compared to Jesus Christ at odd moments... It was weird. Some people will do that. *shrug* My DH and I are pretty initials conscious also, though.

  • does your last name begin with S or end with S? You dont have anything to worry about if it ends in S. Initials are the first letters of the name.
  • Not a big deal at all. Rarely do we think of names in initial form, anyway.

  • Our wedding monogram is NWA and DH wouldn't let me hang the gorgeous wooden monogram from our wedding in our home. But most initials are fine unless offensive.

I guess he's not a fan of gangsta rap. That sucks but it is kind of funny.

Okay, that is what I thought. BS would slightly bug me, I think that i would look for something else, if you keep coming back to Brielle (NMS reminds me of Braille) then go with it.

Oh that's the thing, we LOVE it. But he just didn't think it was a nice thing since our friends would notice and it might be laughed at instead of just being this nice thing adorning our fireplace.
  • My initials growing up were BS. My first name is Brittany so Brittany S was pretty harsh when Britney Spears made her debut. I got more crap with being called her than for my initials. I did make it a point to always write BKS when I had to initial something but that was my preference.

Imade sure with with my kids they didn't have words or anything offensive with their initials. We have LCW, EGW and DMM. My stepsons are SAM and BLM. No one has ever commented about any of their initials
  • My brother's initials are BS and to my knowledge he never got teased or anything from it.  Like PPs have mentioned just avoid the super offensive ones and you should be good.
  • Thanks for all the responses!! We still don't have a name that we are 100% sure on. We might end up having to wait and see her before we settle on one. its so different from when we named our first 2. Their names just felt right when we found them.
  • I don't think it's that big a deal and in my line of work we actually use initials all the time and no one really even notices them.
  • I say who cares about initials....nobody ever uses all three of them together for anything. In fact I can't recall ever using all three of mine or my child's at all. No big deal. Don't over think it. And by the way my daughter's middle name is Brielle, so I obviously love your choice.
