Cloth Diapers

How is cloth diapering going so far for you FTM's or first time cloth diaper users who are giving it a whirl? DH and I are actually enjoying it very much and plan to continue. No complaints thus far.

Re: Cloth Diapers

  • Love it! Right now we are using prefolds and wool during the day and pockets at night. I'm thinking of switching to either to fitteds and wool or pockets full time. I'd like to balance ease of use with wash and dry time. What are you finding works to contain the runny newborn poop?

  • My SO puts her in the disposables we got as gifts every time he changes her. I am glad we are down to 1 more pack then we will really see if we can make the cloth diapering work for us. I know the times she in them, I am happy with the experience. Her BF poop does not wash out as easily as everyone said it would tho...or I am just doing it wrong.

@OctoberStars We use bumgenius pocket style covers and alva baby covers (without pockets) and lay the inserts (bumgenius nb & soaker or gerber prefolds I have cut in half and stiched) on top of each. Most times the cover doesnt even get soiled unless its a huge explosion which is rare but even then since he is EBF it washes right on out (thankfully!) . . so no major tips or tricks. Edited to add: I have a heavy wetter and was having a good bit of pee leaks in the beginning and changing his clothes a fee times a day until I realized I didnt have the area around his thighs tight enough (not too tight) so maybe that is something you could adjust?...

  • @sarahunderthesea Ahh well hopefully the transition goes smoothly! I literally just toss the soiled insert/diaper in the washer and it comes right out. I only wash 3 times a week (unless absolutely necessary) but I find if I let the soiled diapers sit too long I have to double rinse or wash. Best to you!

  • @sarahunderthesea is there still poop on the diapers when they come out of the wash or are they stained? EBF poop stains and all you need to do is when they come out of the wash is dry them in the sun. I am currently dry mine in the sun to get the stains out.

  • We are cloth diapering our DD. We actual have two in cloth right now. This time around I am finding it easier because when I run into issues I know how to troubleshoot. We use pockets and prefolds and covers.

  • @FriendlySoutherner we're really looking the bumgenius pockets! Nice and soft and work well for my heavy wetter with the large microfiber and a thirsties hemp insert. Good idea using it as a cover. I'll have to try that.

@sarahunderthesea are you doing a rinse cycle before the full wash cycle with the soap? Agree with pp that it helps to wash often so the poop doesn't dry out. I do every other day.

  • We love it, we have a toddler and newborn in cloth. We use prefolds and covers and pockets. The only thing is our newborn is petite and the newborn pockets and covers are still big on her. The only downfall is my in laws don't want to be bothered with cloth so we have to provide sposies when they babysit
  • Also sun bleaching works wonders always works for us plus there are liners you can use to lay on top of the diapers to collect the poop and then just throw them away. We use GroVia brand liners @OctoberStars
  • @mamacastro I'm so glad you mentioned the liners! We will be travelling in a couple weeks and I plan to CD while away (washer and dryer available) and I think liners will be perfect while on the road. I haven't looked much into them but definitely will now. Any brand recommendations?

  • We're trying to really get the hang of it. I guess I'm just undecided on what kind I like the best. I've got a handful of each kind of bumgenius. Other than the bulk to adds to her, we're glad we want this route.
  • We got a starter kit for softbums. I really like their design. They also have liner to put on the inserts and they are biodegradable. We haven't started with them yet but plan to start incorporating them in as we are on hopefully our last box of disposables.
  • @FriendlySoutherner we use GroVia's bioliners but there are a quite a few brands that make their own. We have also tried Ozocozy brand's liners and they were softer
  • @mamacastro Thanks! Will look into them both.
