Is there such a thing as too much folic acid? (Loss mentioned)

Good Ole Google has got me all worked up this evening. I was due May 4, with a baby boy, who ended up being still born at 20 weeks. He had a double cleft palate and a portion of his skull didn't fully form. We did all the genetic and chromosome testing and he was perfect in those ways. Since then, I've continued taking the preplus 27-1 and added and addition 800 mcg of folic acid. Now I've read a few things  (whether they're credible or not ) and now that I'm pregnant I'm worried I'm going to cause problems with this baby. Anyone have any incite?

  • lurking from oct 16. my obgyn told me to take 800mg this go round after 2 previous losses. I don't know what preplus is but the actual 800 dosage isn't too much

That actually doesn't seem like much compared to the 800mg pp are taking. Are you sure you have the correct units?

ETA: ahh now I see, one of the pps probably meant to put "mcg" instead of mg. I'm still pissed that the medicine world can't use proper terms like "ug" for microgram (too bad I can't put a mu in on TB)

  • Women with family histories of or previous pregnancies with neural tube defects take up to 5mg of folic acid daily. So I'd think you're still good, but as always - check with your healthcare provider!

I'm on 5mg daily (prenatal plus 4mg pills) due to a previous neural tube defect.  You're fine!
  • I'm going to talk with my Dr. today just to make sure on everything even though it's early. Thanks for easing my mind.
