Baby's ears

whats the best way you have found to clean baby's ears? My sons ears are always waxy and gross (good cause there draining).
so my question is what do you do to keep them clean?
washcloths don't get the job done and q tips are super dangerous... I'm at a loss :/

  • It's kinda gross but I just use my pinky finger. I never clean the insides of his ears
  • The thing with q tips is people shove them in the ear canal and the wax gets impacted. If you're only using them to clean outside it's fine. For the same reason you shouldn't clean inside the ear period.

    Same here.

  • I've just been picking it out with my nails too or a wash cloth. My pedi said no tips and to not worry about it since it's not a bad thing.
  • I use the baby q tips. And if he is sleeping I will use a Bobby pin to get any gunk that is at the ear hole but I won't go further then that into his ear.

I remember growing up my mom always left one of her pinky nails really long and would use it to pick the wax out. I remember it feeling good when I was little though.
  • I use a thin wash cloth with plain warm water and wipe down the outer part of the ear. If it's stubborn I'll use a q-tip on the outer part only to remove the crusty buildup he gets. I never use the q-tip in the ear canal.
  • SO's mother used a hair pin for him and his brothers and they all have issues with impacted wax and sore ears. There's also the issue of possibly putting it too far inside the ear canal or baby moving and hitting the ear drum. Busted ear drums are very painful. I don't recommend hair pins.

In shock anyone would put something that sharp in an ear

she also smoked and drank while pregnant, then with them in the home. Common sense didn't run too deep with her as a mother. She's much wiser with my son now, mainly because she knows if she smokes around him or does something like the pin in the ear she will never see him again.
  • The baby qtips are designed so they can't go to far into the ear canal. My dilemna is a cheesy  smell behind the ear even after I wash them.

Does your baby have deep creases or folds behind the ear? I did as a kid and my mom used either witch hazel or rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball behind them before giving me a bath. I guess the cheesy smell might be why.

We've never cleaned the insides of his ears. We use a wet Q-tip to get the crust from the folds in the outside of the ears.  ETA: I've also used a Boogie Wipe (saline wipe) on my finger to clean his ears.

I honestly don't know. It seems like it would. My step dad gave my husband one as a gag gift and he lost the pieces but it came to mind with this thread.
  • I use my finger nail while I nurse... It's so rewarding to get the dry skin/gunk out. And obviously I just clean the outside. But I have a weird obsession with cleaning ears....
