Are these names too matchy?

edited March 2016 in Baby Names
DH and I finally agreed on a name we both love for a girl, despite it's popularity, Ava. It wasn't until last night when I said the name with my DD's name that I realized they are really close sounding. DD is Layla, so the sisters would be Layla and Ava. I really love Ava and we've struggled for a while to agree on a girl name. Should I throw Ava out because it's too close, or do you think it would be okay to use?

  • I find them very much a tongue twister.

I do too. I asked a close friend her opinion and she did bring up a good point in saying even though they would be sisters, they wouldn't always be introduced together or have both of their names said at the same time. I'm just not sure whether I should throw out a name we love because of them sounding similar or not. I'm so tired of going back to the drawing board!

I get the struggle.  Naming #2 (another boy) and then #3 a girl was so hard, and not that #1 was any easier for us either.  It's true that they won't always be introduced together but for the majority of YOUR life they will be talked about together and a good 18 years living all in one house.  I know I call my three all the wrong names and they are nothing alike.  WHen are you do? Maybe take a break from names for a couple weeks, I know that helped us in the naming process.  Of if you are up for suggestions, maybe we could toss out something you haven't thought of.

  • My concern would be when you call for one they wouldn't know which one you were wanting unless you really enunciate.
  • Mixing them up is my biggest concern too. I already call DS and DD by the other's name sometimes and their names aren't similar at all.
  • Way too close. What about Eva? It's similar to Ava, but less long A sounds.

  • Do it, I don't think it's too close. In my family we are Karli, Kasey, Alli and Alexi. My sisters even have the exact same initials! You're going to mix up their names no matter what. I'm always of the opinion to name your kids the name you love.
  • I hate to say it, but I think it is too close, plus she will be one of so many Avas. I just don't think the name has enough substance to justify its popularity. Eve or Eva, nickname Evie would be prevcious. What are some other names you have considered?

  • They do sound similar, but I don't think it really matters.
  • Doesn't bother me at all.
  • I think it's a little too matchy, but I wouldn't throw it out over it. If it's the name you love, I'd still do it.
I have to say though, that my daughter is Evangeline and we call her Eva. People really love it!
  • Are they pretty close? Yes. Deal breaker? I do t think so. You may find your tongue twisted a few times calling them for dinner, but to be fair my dad did that to me with my brother's name (that sounds nothing like my own).
I think they are their own names enough that it would be fine.
Layla and Lila, or Eva and Ava, or something like that would be more problematic.

  • There's a family of girls at the school I work at who are, I kid you not, Layla, Lylah and Lakylah. So I'm voting not close enough to throw out Ava.
