BF success with #1 = success with #2 or not?

Just wondering what your experience has been.  TIA.

Re: BF success with #1 = success with #2 or not?

  • i would think if you had a successful time with dd1, you would be good to go with dd2.

i was not successful with dd1 (lack of knowledge, stress, etc).  so i learned everything i could before dd2.  now we are 9 mons into it. :)

  • Maybe it was because they're so close in age but breastfeeding with #2 was easier for me than bfing #1.

  • Overall yes. But it has been a different experience. Different baby, different issues, which I didn't count on. I assumed it would be the same, but my 2 girlies are polar opposites in the BFing dept :)

    Good luck!

  • I had a much harder time breastfeeding #1.  It's been so much easier the second time around.

  • I had pretty good luck with #1 and it's been a BREEZE with #2.  My nips hurt a bit in the beginning, but everything's been so much easier this time around.
  • I BF'ed DD for 15 months. I thought BFing DS would be a breeze, but I was surprised to find it was just as painful in the beginning when he was a newborn. Once we got past the first couple of weeks, though, it really WAS a breeze. I also weaned him at 15 months.

  • DD#1 was a lazy and frustrated nurser.  I also dealt with flat nipples which, after BFing for 13.5 mos are no longer flat.  Stick out tongue  I used a nipple shield for 4 weeks with her and then had a better go at it.  I still didn't really enjoy it for several months.

DD#2 latched perfectly the FIRST time she tried and we've been going strong ever since.  I'm actually enjoying it this time.  So much easier this time.

I was a lot more prepared for the unexpected (didn't have to be, fortunately) the second time around.

  • I forgot to add that my milk came in extremely fast the second time--I think the day after he was born. With my first, it took something like 5 or 6 days to come in!

  • I was NOT successful with DD1, but have been so far with DD2.  I'm also trying harder this time.

With #1, I got mastitis and then thrush, so I quit.  I was so stressed out about the whole thing.

With #2, I was more relaxed about the experience.  If it worked, great, and if not, that was fine too.  Maybe that's why it's working!

  • I had a tough time with my first, nursed him until he was 4 months old then pumped for another month.

I'm still nursing my one year old at night.  It was much easier this time around.

  • Much easier the second time around.  We still had issues but it was for a week or so, rather than the month with my first.  My milk also came in much sooner, less than 24 hours after delivery, and I had almost an oversupply.  The first time it took almost 3 days to come in and I had an average supply.
  • I had a MUCH easier time with #2 than with #1. At least with #2, one of you know what you're doing!
