Playing with toys

How do your babies play with their toys? Jane gets a very serious look on her face. She handles the toy for a minute. Then she gets frustrated and makes angry squeals with a furrowed brow until I take the toy away. Haha.

I'm curious. How do your little ones respond when presented with an object for entertainment?

Re: Playing with toys

  • This was her reaction as soon as I got the toy out of her sight. Lol
  • Loading the player...
  • Oliver likes his activity saucer, probably because he's standing and he likes his ball and rattle, but that's about it. He does the same thing with other toys!

B gets bored very easily. He will play with a toy for about 5 minutes and then fuss until I give him something new. Except for his feet. Those will entertain him for about 20 minutes. He likes to pull his foot to his face and pull his sock into his mouth and chew on it so yesterday I gave him a (clean) sock to play with.

Rhys looks at it for approximately three seconds, then whatever it is goes in his mouth.  He'll sit there gagging and still not take it out, too.  He really loves this flannel square with crinkly noise paper in the middle.

Mine doesn't do well with electronics either. He only likes the kick and play piano and the mobile in his crib. Everything else electronic just annoys him. He prefers squishy things that he can try and put in his mouth and then uncontrollably cries when he realizes he can't actually shove a whole giraffe in there.
  • Is it weird that my baby doesn't seem to care about most toys? She has a stuffed dog that she likes to smile at, but the only toy she will actually reach for is a little "my first doll". Everything else she just looks at with indifference.

Not weird at all. You will just have to figure out what type of toys she is into. It might be something as simple as a burp cloth or a ball. Everyone raves about the sofie giraffe but neither one of my kids liked it.
  • I still have to hand things to my LO. He is pretty indifferent about most toys too. He seems to be an observer more than a player right now. He likes to kick the legs on his play mat to watch things jiggle, but that's about it.

He does like putting things into his mouth but it seems to be a comfort thing rather than a playing thing since it looks like he's teething.

  • This owl with the rubbery rings on the side is the only toy that Isabel seems to be interested in picking up and playing with. She likes to grab and shake it and then chew on the rings and the stuffed animal part. I also have a little bug shaped rattle with crinkly wings attached to her little chair that she will absent minded-ly play with when she's sitting, but it doesn't seem to get her attention as much as she just likes to have something to do with her hands.

Right now goal number one is to get toys in her mouth.  But since she doesn't have the motor skills to guide them there efficiently, she gets frustrated.  If I help her get something into her mouth, she's pretty happy to chew and contemplate.  She's started batting toys around during tummy time, but I'm not sure it's intentional or just arm flails.  LOVES crinkly things, we have some books with crinkly pages and a crinkly leaf on her activity mat.  She likes to grab with both hands and continue crinkling it while chewing on a corner.  She also likes watching blinky lights on electronic toys, doesn't play with em, just watches the lights.

ETA oh and burp cloths, or mommy's clothes or hair, or anything soft and fabric-y.  But she won't take a clean burp cloth if I reserve one for play, it's gotta be the one mommy's been using to wipe drool off our face.  Goofy kid.
  • She plays with any item I put on her, grabs with both hand, puts in her mouth. By moving it around so much it falls and I pick it up and we do another round. She plays a lot by herself on the playmat with the toys hanging, she turns them and pulls, and pulls to her mouth lol. She loves turning pages of books too. But just being on the playmat can last 1 hour, on the tummy, on her back... then she wants to be carried ot have another point of view, like the changing table. She will be 15weeks saturday.
We do long talks too, she days aaaaaah and we say oooooh and it can go for 10 or 15 min like that, so cute.
    Love these days :)

This is us.. My little guy will stare at toys, but didn't care to reach for them, much less play.
He still hold on to blankets and pull them to his mouth though.
  • DD grabs everything and immediately brings whatever it is to her mouth. She's really improved her hand/eye coordination over the past couple weeks. She can now even get her paci back in on her own after a couple of tries. She loves playing with toys, kicks her legs wildly, squeals, talks to the toys, and when she's reaching she makes a very concentrated face until she grasps it.

Wow! I can't believe your LO will last an hour on the playmat. I'm lucky if I get 15 minutes.
  • @MoRay05 we go from back to tummy twice though. She stays longer on her back, tummy she complains after 10 or 20 min. She turned herself only once, by reaching for a toy lol, she did not get the trick yet.
  • Bridget likes to play with crinkly things and will sit and "talk" to her toys or the birds on her mobile.  She'll chat for a bit, but will eventually start giving them hell when they come down to her or talk back.  She has a crinkly butterfly toy on her playmat that she loves and an elephant that she likes to stare at and then chew its nose.  She also rolls over and scoots around in circles as though her bum is the center of a clock.  She doesn't stay on the playmat very long any more because she rolls away from it.  We call her our little log.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • Anything that lights up and anything musical.
  • My LO really likes light up/musical toys, too, like the Baby Einstein take along toy (small enough to fit in the diaper bag) and his activity playmat at home.
