3rd Trimester

Pokes toes into 3rd tri- 24 hr Urine collection?

Anyone here done this? Its a PITA right?

I had super high BP at my appt this morning... 141/102, but i've been taking it at home and it averages 115/80's.

The nurse took it again at the end of appt and she siad it was 102/62 which i have never seen the bottom number so low before.

My doc consulted with a neo-natologist(sp?) and called me back, now wants to put me on a low dose BP reducer medication, and i have to do a 24 hr urine collection on Monday.

I've never had to do this before... but from what i googled, looks like a PITA and i was wondering if you went to work while doing this? I can't imagine lugging my urine jug into the bathroom at work (multi-stalls) and keeping it cool in the fridge during the day.

Did you go to work when you were doing this?

Wow.. I had high BP at my last appointment so I wonder if this will be in my future too.

Were I you, I'd call off for that day.

  • I have to do one every two weeks. I do it on Sunday and drop it off on Monday.

I am on 200mgs of Labetalol and my BP is totally stable now.  I have PIH/Pre-e.

What meds are they talking about starting?

  • I didn't write down the name of the med, i will let you know when i get from pharmacy.
  • I did it pretty early on, then they lost the sample, so I had to do it again! UGH! I put my jug in a cooler and under my desk at work. No one knew what I was doing. Also, since LO was pretty small then, I was able to wait to urinate for several hours. I only had to use it twice at work.
  • I had to do this on Tuesday. I thought it would be horrible as well but it wasn't that bad. I went to work with the plans of leaving if it got weird. They gave me the little urine collection hat and a giant orange jug lol. I put both in a plastic bag and then inside if one of the black reusable shopping bags. Every time I went to potty I took the black bag with me. I was really embarrassed having to collect urine but that was the worst part. It has to be refridgerated so I stored it on the bottom shelf in that black bag. I had to do it because I developed pre-e the day I went into labor with DD. This doc just wants to have an idea of what is normal for me in case it does develop.
  • I did mine on a Sunday.  I didn't have to do it due to high blood pressure though, the mfm specialist just wanted it done.  Along with the orange jug, my lab gave me a collection container that I left on the toilet so that I could collect it easier, DH just used the other bathroom.  Also, it wasn't said, but after a while the urine in the jug horribly stinks.  I kept the jug on the bottom shelf in a bag.  I didn't feel comfortable doing it at work, didn't want to do it at work.  It just feels too weird especially when I could do it at home.  I dropped off the orange jug on Monday after the last sample before going to work.

  • I did it at 28 weeks when I spilled a little protein (turned out to be a UTI) and had borderline high BP (I think it was 130-ish/85-ish).

I worked from home. I really, really can't imagine dragging a jar of urine around work. I mean, it's gross (!!) to keep it in a communal fridge and I wasn't about to bring in a cooler.

Your other option would be to do it Sunday and bring it in Monday morning (not sure how urgent they consider the results to be).
