Baby Names

Harry

It's fairly uncommon for my husband and I to agree on baby names, but lately I've had a case of baby fever and I've been asking about names more often. One we agreed on, was Harry. Wdyt?
I find it interesting that it's upwards of #700 in popularity in the U.S. but in the top 50 in several other countries and #3 in the U.K. (because of Prince Harry I'm assuming?) I like it for the additional reason, that my grandfather's name is Harold. My only concern is that it would be too many H's with my son being Hank. Wdyt?

Re: Harry

  • Personally I don't like Harry as a given it seems very unfortunate to be honest. I don't hate it as a nn but still nms. I do find it to much with Hank as well it's very matchy

  • Harry and Hank are both NNs for Henry, so I don't think it is a good idea.

In general Harry is NMS, but I do know a little Harry and he wears it well.

  • I don't care for Harry. We really like Harrison but are probably going to go another direction because we don't want people calling our child Harry.

  • I was all for it until I looked up some stats online and it says Hank is a variant of Harry. Too similar.
  • Well, that won't work then. I didn't realize Harry derived from Henry, too. Ok, thanks for your help ladies!

  • I immediately think hairy. I also prefer Henry.

  • Maybe try switching up the first letter to make it more different from your other kid? Gary, Perry, Carey, Jerry?
  • What about using Harrison? Then you could use the nickname Harry if you want.

Harrison was on our long list when I was pregnant three years ago. I really like it but I do not like the nn Harry (even though my paternal grandfather's name was Harry and it would have been nice to honour him).

I grew up with some boys whose last name is Harrison and the nicknames they were called (Hairy this and that...) really turned me off of the name.
