help with girl name

First time poster here.  We are expecting a girl and the two names we like right now are Vivian and Quinn.  The twist: I had a rabbit named Quinn when I was in college and for several years thereafter.  Do you think that is prohibitive?  Do you prefer Vivian anyway?  Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Re: help with girl name

  • Vivian is very timeless. Quinn on a girl is like an Ashley. It's masculine as a name and insanely trendy on a girl so it will be dated in the very near future. The rabbit thing is just added to why I wouldn't use it since that's not that long ago I assume

  • I don't really think the rabbit thing is a big deal and unlike most traditionally boy names being given to girls that put me into a rage, Quinn does not bother me for some reason. Maybe because I strongly associate it with the girl on Daria. I think either name is fine. I would personally still choose Vivian over Quinn though.
  • Vivian.  Quinn is masculine, and Quinn from Daria is a terrible namesake.
  • Thanks for the input - I really appreciate it!

    +1

Vivian is beautiful, timeless, melodic and a strong female name in my opinion. It doesn't automatically lead to a nickname, so if you don't wish to use one you won't have to, but if she decides to use one she'll have an option.

Also, the fact that you're even considering the rabbit name issue might be a sign that you're not 100% secure in the name choice of Quinn. In my experience after reading through thousands of potential names, none of the ones where I thought "but it reminds me of this one person who looked at me funny in first grade" stuck around for long. The association might just be yours, but it's bound to stay on your mind. Why not just stay on the "safe" side with Vivian (you didn't mention any drawbacks on this one)? It's a great choice, so you can't really go wrong with it :)

  • I love both and don't think that the bunny reference is a big deal.

I know a lot of people on here don't like masculine names on girls, which is totally understandable. I actually know way more female Quinn's than make Quinn's however, so I consider it unisex and really like it! :)

I love Quinn. It was our favorite girl name, but we had a boy. I have never met a male Quinn and associate it totally with females. I don't mind Vivian, but I actually think it's a lot more common/trendy.
  • Love Vivian. Ditch Quinn.

  • Vivian for sure.
  • Quinn is my favorite girl name, that would be my LO name if it were a girl
  • I don't think that the rabbit thing is a big deal (we had Sam on our list, and that was the name of my childhood dog), but I just don't like Quinn. So my vote is Vivian (Vivian is also my daughter's middle name, so I may be a bit bias).

  • Love Vivian!
Quinn is ok. The rabbit only matters if it bothers you.
  • I think of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman! :)

I also really like Vivian.  You could call her Viv, Vivi, Vi, etc.  I think Quinn too, I personally just like Vivian better.  My friend named her daughter Vivienne, so there are many spellings of it also!

Vivienne and Vivian are not pronounced the same actually.  People just think one is a prettier spelling unfortunately.

What are the different pronunciations? I always see people bring this up but didn't want to start a whole thread to ask! :)

Vivienne (french form of Viviana) has emphasis on the last syllable EN. Whereas Vivian has emphasis on the first syllable.

  • I really like Quinn. I wouldn't worry about the rabbit.

    Hate Vivian. Too prissy.
  • I love Vivian and personally am not a fan at all of androgynous names, period.
  • I don't think the rabbit think is an issue, but I prefer Vivian anyway.

  • I personally like Quinn better. It was on my list but DH said no. I wouldn't let the bunny name be the reason you don't use it.
