Thoughts on skiing??

Just took a positive pregnancy test this morning (yay!!!!!) - should be 5w or so. Family has had a long-planned skiing trip scheduled 2 weeks from now. Hubby and I were planning on trying for 2nd baby right after trip, but it seems we were successful a month ahead of schedule. Will be 7 weeks at the time of trip. I know travel is fine this early, but has anyone been skiing? I am comfortable skiing and very cautious by nature, but I know there is always the risk of other skiers around me. Baby is so protected and tiny right now, I am leaning towards feeling ok about it, but I'd like your opinions!

Re: Thoughts on skiing??

  • I wouldn't. I'd be way too scared of a fall. Can you still go and hang out in the ski lodge?

  • Personally, I probably wouldn't either. If something were to go wrong God forbid, I would hate to have the "what if's" in my head. I'm also excessively cautious. When I was pregnant with my first we took a babymoon to Hawaii, and my doctor advised against me doing a boat ride that was known to be a little rough.
  • My husband and I love to ski and snowboard. But we haven't gone the past two winters because I've been pregnant. I won't risk it. I would never forgive myself if something happened and a fall could have been the cause!
  • @molson1 I also have a ski trip planned in two weeks, and I will be 6 weeks pregnant.  I'm going to ski, but will stick with blues and take it very easy.  If you decide to do it, don't ski anywhere crowded where you would be more likely to get run into.  Don't do it if you feel uncomfortable!
  • I have already been skiing! I trust myself, and I was extremely cautious of people around me. I have been skiing for a long, long time as well. I think you should use your judgement. I am going on a ski trip the first week of March and I will be 9 weeks, I will be skiing then too...I will just take it easy and listen to my body. I think at the end of the day, you will be the only one to make the right decision for yourself.  :)

I snowboard and ski, and can't see any reason why you would stay away from it, especially in the first trimester. There is no harm to the baby if you fall in the first trimester. Your body does a very good job of protecting the baby! Any activity you are used to doing should be fine. Just don't overexert yourself.

Now if you've never skied before, this is not the time to learn!

Also, stay out of the hot tub... Have fun!

  • I went skiing when I was about 8 weeks with my DS. My doctor approved it. I was cautious and didn't go nuts, but I also didn't act like I was made of glass. If you're comfortable and doc approves, I say go for it. (I might have a slightly higher risk tolerance than others; I also played field hockey goalie during my first tri. Again, doctor approved).
  • We were supposed to go this past Saturday but morning sickness got the best of me. So I think it's okay. If you are a solid skier, I don't see why not. You'd probably be more likely to get in a car crash heading to the mountain than having a crash of some sort while on the slopes.

  • I have been backcountry splitboarding and did a fat bike race and won at 6 weeks! Doctor had no concerns with my health and skill level and encouraged me to do thinks while I can. I was cautious but felt good to get out.
  • I still plan to go this winter.  I missed last season because I was in my third tri.  But, like others, I won't go crazy.  I'm more concerned about having to peel off my gear to go pee which I seem to have to do every hour lately.

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.

  • Given my track record for maneuverability in the snow (let's just say it's BAD), I would stay far away from the slopes. I feel like such a fragile flower the first 13 or so weeks of pregnancy, I wouldn't risk anything.

  • Just wanted to add, if you do go, I found that I was much more sensitive to the cold. I had to go in a lot to warm up. (Obviously may not apply to you, just letting you know my experience).
  • It would be a no-go for me, but my doctors don't like me to do sports that could result in falls. My spinal fractures are just one of the reasons, but with baby on board I'm not really comfortable anyway.

If if you want to ski & feel it's safe-- go for it. Just remember to hydrate & stay warm.

You should totally go skiing if your a good skier. I would not snowboard, but skiing is fine. Just stay on easy runs. I've been skiing for many years, I'm comfortable on skis. Just don't over do it, listen to your body and rest, get lots of fluid. I plan on going next week. I'm 7 weeks pregnant. I'm extremely sick and tired though......plan on only a few runs for me. Hurry and go before morning sickness takes you out. Haha
  • Thanks, everyone!! As you all know, pregnancy is SUCH a personal thing.  Outside of a few major no-no's,  the foods we eat, the activities we do, etc are all personal choices on what we are comfortable with or not.  I'm leaning towards going and just taking it really easy. Might use some "excuses" on the trip and enjoy some spa/resort time if I get too tired or worried!
  • That was me last weekend trying to decide! I love to ski and am pretty decent. However, last time someone cut me off and tripped me which made me land belly first on the slope good old super man style. Because I can't control stupid people on the slopes, I decided to not risk it. Completely your decision since you know your body best :) Good luck!
