It depends on what you mean by sleep training. I had read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child with my first, so I knew and kept in mind some of the ideas from the book as far as timing naps, encouraging sleep, setting up the room for ideal sleep conditions. But I didn't expect them to sleep or to follow a schedule or to self-soothe for many months. If you mean CIO, I still don't do that. I'll let them fuss for 5-10 minutes if I know they are ready for sleep, but I didn't start doing that until they were at least 6 months.
I never did with DD and she didn't STTN until I weaned her- like 9 days ago. With the twins I will probably do some sleep training (don't know what, though) at 6 months.

We started a routine and some mild sleep training about 7 weeks and they started STTN at 8 weeks...I do have 2 really good sleepers though. so..But i did use some of the advice from "The Baby Sleep Solution". I have noticed since we are in a bit of a routine and schedule they are happier and more content!
Also did the Baby Sleep Solution by Suzy Giordiano. I started when the girls were 12 weeks old (8 1/2 weeks adjusted). This was because the babies need to be at least 8 weeks adjusted, weigh at least 8 pounds and taking in at least 24 oz. of formula/breastmilk a day before you should start trying to sleep train them. It took until 12 weeks old before my smaller twin was at the correct weight and taking in enough food in a 24 hour period.
I had wonderful success with her methods. My girls were sleeping through the night 12 hours without any feedings at night anymore within 5 weeks of starting the plan.
I also have Healthy Sleep Habits Healthy Child and it really doesn't get into the depth of what would be sleep training until they hit at least 4 months old adjusted. I really like this book for more of a reference on how to deal with any issues the girls may be having that is disturbing their good sleep habits.
