Baby Names

Harper??? I'm torn...

We are having a girl in June. It's our third kid, second girl.  The one name that my dh has fallen in love with is Harper. He is set on it. I like it ok, but I'm worried it's too trendy and unisex.

What are you thoughts on the name?  We would likely put it with a middle name of Natalie, Jane, Kate or Anne.

  • I like it as a middle name. Natalie Harper sounds nice to me.

  • I like it, but more in a guilty pleasure sort of way. It would be better as a middle name as PP suggested.
  • I love it! So much that we most likely will name our daughter Harper Rose.

i just want to say too that it's interesting to me to see trends around here in terms of liking similar names. We had Harper, Natalie and Kate on our list. This is not the first time I've seen posters with the same list as we have. It shows that there are styles of names that some people just tend to gravitate to.

  • You are correct that is pretty trendy. I feel like Harper is kind of the new Ava. It'll be dominating Kindergarten classes in the next 2 to 3 years. I'm not sure how I feel about it being unisex...it's really more of a surname than a traditional first name. (And before anyone comes at me, Harper Lee's first name is actually Nelle.) That said, it's a fine middle name. I love Natalie Harper.

Also suggesting these H names and some less overtly feminine names:
    Helene
    Holly
    Taylor
    Alexandra (nn Alex)
    Frances
Haley (surname origin, but less common than Harper)

  • Harper is already becoming dated trendy. It's more a masculine name turned incredibly trendy on girls. Yes a surname as well which just adds to the trend factor. It's like an Ashley of previous generations. I don't mind popular names I hate names that when hearing you can pinpoint a specific time frame they were born. I agree maybe Natalie Harper? I wouldn't first name it.

  • I love the name Harper, but can't use it because of how horrible our last Prime
Minister was (Stephen Harper- Canada). Otherwise I would have totally used the name- it just makes me think of him! If you're not from Canada, I'm assuming you're not- i think Harper Jane is a lovely name!
  • We're also considering the name Harper, but I have some ties to a community with that name.  We'd likely go with Harper Elizabeth.  The problem I have with it is figuring out a decent nickname.  Can't imagine calling my child "Harpy," even if she was being one...lol

I agree on the nn issue. I find myself calling her harpy and I hate it! When she's having an acitive day she is "hyper Harper". I hope that her personality lends to a cute nn as there are no good options as a derivative of the name.

This is how I feel. Whenever I see a kid named Harper, my first thought is "You really loved TKAM in 9th grade. You must be so well read" :unamused:
  • Harsh and heavy for a girl IMO
  • I actually really like the name Harper, it was on our list too. I like Jane or Kate as the middle name.

  • I think it is an ugly name. Never like it. Actually, I down right hate it.
  • Harper Jane was on my short list along with Harper Grace
  • Even after the trend i do not see the appeal.

    Natalie is gorgeous
  • I think there are a TON of "trendy" names right now and Harper is one of them but its cute and if you dont mind that, go for it.

  • It's on the late end of trendy - I think it's overused and unoriginal. Natalie, on the other hand, is lovely!
