Trouble TTC

Kind of bummed (and a bit irritated)

I posted here last week about my doctor's appointment with my gyno. Basically my gyno's RN called and told me that everything came back normal / negative with the exception of Bacterial Vaginosis. My gyno called the same day ( a few hours later) and since I missed her call she told me to call back. By the time I got the voicemail the offce was closed and I decided I would call back Monday and told myself she probably didn't realize her nurse had called me already. Well yesterday (Monday) I called and got my gyno's RN. I told her my gyno called and asked her if there was anything noted as to why the gyno would have called. She said nothing was noted other than going over the results of the tests. I asked if I possibly has PCOS (since my gyno was thinking that may have been a possibility) and if there was anything noted about that. My gyno's RN said I did not have it and that everything was fine and that my gyno must not have realized I was already given my results and that she would let my gyno know I received them.

Well this morning my gyno called me (and I was actually able to answer). It turns out that the results of my FSH and another test (forgot which one she said it was) are consistent with the range of PCOS and that she wants to start me on treatment for it (a pill called meta something) as soon as I am done with the medication for the bacterial vaginosis and medication that will force me to have a period. She said PCOS is not serious and that it is very common.

I mentioned my calls with her RN to my gyno and my gyno said that when I talked to the RN the 1st time, the FSH results weren't even back yet so she doesn't know why her RN would have told me everything was fine with them.

I am a bit irritated with the whole situation now and also a bit bummed that I might have PCOS.

DH thinks my gyno is getting ahead of herself here and wants me to hold off on starting any treatment for PCOS until we see if my periods come every month like they should after I take the withdrawl bleeding medication. DH also wants me to get a second opinion from another doctor.

Anyone have any experience with this? Advice would also be appreciated. I'm not sure what to do right now.

  • I just want kindly point out that you posted the original post in trying to conceive,  and not in trouble trying to conceive.  I'm sure many of the ladies there remember your post (I do)  and would love to offer advice.  Ladies here Might also have something to offer.  Anyway,  just want to make sure you know that there are two different boards :)

I don't know much about pcos...  But I do know that I would recommend a second opinion if that's what would help your DH feel more comfortable.  Can you get one quickly?  Good luck!

  • I personally have no experience with pcos, but I don't think I would be sticking around that office. Medical stuff is serious and should not be handled in a way that causes miscommunication. I'm with DH on getting a second opinion and possibly finding a new OB or moving on to a RE. Good Luck whatever you decide!

  • A second opinion is a must. Mixed communication like that is not acceptable and won't help with your emotional well being or stress levels.

I have PCOS (although only slightly apparently). My cycles can range from 35 days to 61. I don't think taking medication to bring on a bleed would then regulate your cycle- my understanding is that it doesn't work like that.

Seek a second opinion and see what they suggest.
  • @SmileyMcGee Yes, you're right, totally unacceptable. My sister in law was once told over the phone by the office assistant that she probably had renal failure and that she could die. The doctor didn't call her for a month. She thought she was dying and was later informed that her kidneys were actually fine. That situation was uncalled for, as is yours Miss. Saphire.

  • My suggestion is to get a 2nd opinion and maybe try to have it be from a reproductive DR.

Thanks! Yes I know there are 2 different boards. I posted in both on purpose trying to get as much insight / advice as I could since I felt lost when I first talked to my gyno on the phone and she told me I possibly have PCOS.

I don't know if I could get a 2nd opinion quickly. I want to get it from an RE or a doctor similar but I am not sure where to find one (I know that sounds weird) and if / when I did, I don't know if there would be a wait to get in or not.

You and @SmileyMcGee hit the nail on the head about why DH and I want to get a 2nd opinion (miscommunication).

@DinosaurJumper - I am sorry to hear your sister went through that. I would have been livid if that were me.

There with probably be a wait for an re, and it looks like you need a new Obgyn anyways, so maybe see one while youre trying to get into the other? Also, you need to check with your insurance... You might have the type that requires you have a referral for an RE. In which case, speak with your primary physician about what occurred with your ob gyn and see if he/she will give you a referral to an re. But like i said, every woman needs an obgyn, so you may as well get searching doer that anyway. If you don't need a referral do a "search for a provider" on your health insurance website. Find the RE's closes to you and research each one. Do the same process for your ob gyn. I learned how to be very picky about doctors when I got a cancer diagnosis. I used to be of the camp "go to whoever is closest". I can tell you, youre better off researching and finding the best. This kinda stuff isnanhuge deal... Don't let just anyone handle your health. Keep us updated!!

  • I think going to a reproductive endocrinologist (RE) is a really good idea.  I got a recommendation from my PCP when it became clear we were having trouble, and we have been so happy with the RE...he has become my gold standard for doctors.

I personally would also be annoyed by that treatment from the OB/GYN office and would start meeting new providers, but I don't think that's a substitute for finding an RE that you like and trust.

  • @gardeniagirlknits @BrightenMySky

I plan on doing research. I have started a little bit and it doesn't look like I need a referral from my primary doctor so that's a good thing. I will definitely keep you updated whenever I have any updates :)  Thanks for all the support (and thank you to the others as well).
