Re: Randoms Thread-February

  • @LakeR2014 - I'm assuming that bleu cheese is on the no-no list just because it's a soft cheese, yes?  My thoughts on soft cheese are as follows: The risk of soft cheese comes from the idea that they are sometimes made with unpasteurized milk and can therefore carry bacteria. Most cheese you buy in a grocery store will tell you in the ingredients if it is being made with pasteurized milk - if it is, I eat it anyways. Mozzarella, goat cheese, etc.  If at a restaurant I ask if they know if it's made with pasteurized milk (most likely is unless they're using a local farm/fresh cheese then it might not be so certain).  If it's not pasteurized, I personally wouldn't eat it as the possible risk just isn't worth it.  If it is pasteurized I eat it.

Now... I'm not overly careful about the food list. Luckily I'm a vegetarian so I don't have to decide on the list of meats that are up in the air. As for raw eggs, I do my best to avoid (though my history of snacking on cookie dough is known) but will often get caesar dressing without remembering to ask if there is raw egg in it.

  • @LakeR2014 My OB okay'd soft cheeses, including blue cheese, which made me very, very happy, since it's my favorite.  I've eaten it a handful of times so far.  You do want to make sure it's made with pasteurized milk, but that shouldn't be an issue if you live in the US.

It's just that there's a risk of listeria, but there's a risk of listeria from damn near everything these days, so he told me that if I were going to avoid soft cheeses and lunch meat, then I better not stand outside when it's overcast or I might get struck by lightning, too, considering how many cases of listeriosis he's actually seen in his career (one; back in the early 80's).

  • @LakeR2014 I could have hugged him when he said that.  And I hadn't even asked!  It was the high point of that appointment!

    Enjoy your salad!

  • @LakeR2014 Eat all the blue cheese! If it's American made, it's most likely pasteurized. I couldn't live without my blue cheese.

That said, other than alcohol, I haven't nixed anything from my diet. I haven't had raw eggs this pregnancy, but I licked many a brownie batter bowl while pregnant for DD. The eggs were the only thing DH called me out on, but I have very little will power when it comes to brownie batter.

  • @camichael84 - I'm right there with ya. Did I eat raw eggs every day? No I did not, but my habit of a pinch of dough whenever I bake is hard to remember to (care to) break. 1 egg in a batch of dough, and I'm eating a pinch? How much egg could that bite contain? And on top of that, would have to be a diseased egg.  I just.. I don't know. The food restrictions are not something that I've looked too far into either time.

  • Oh man, I LOVE dates. I like them just plain, all by themselves, but there is this place in California called Shields and they make the most amazing date shakes!! I get one every time I go back home to visit....damnit....now I'm craving a date shake...

  • At the grocery store at lunch and did the self check out.  I scanned and bagged, picked them up when an employee had to point out I didn't pay yet.... I felt so embarrassed and overly stated how I was spacey today and really hope they don't think I was trying to steal 20 bucks worth of food. :(

On a side note I was going to tell my work team at our scheduled team building smoothie break but one person (of 4) will not be there and our new grad student assistant who started today will be.  With this I think I'll wait, which makes me both a bit relieved and bummed.
  • Had my 12 week (well 11w 4d, but close) today.  Brought DH because I thought we'd have an U/S...nope, just a sono.  Got to hear the heartbeat, though!  It took a bit to find the bug, so I'm glad I never got around to ordering an at-home Doppler.  I'd have been frantic trying to get the hb at home!  Good news for the baby, then, but when they did the blood draw I passed out in the chair before they finished.  I usually get faint, but that's the first time I've actually gone out.  :weary:

  • @Jabreen Sorry to hear you passed out, and I hope you're okay.

It can be hard to find the hearbeat with the doppler at this stage. I was 12w4d when they tried it with DD the first time, and it took forever, too. The nurse kept finding mine at first and thinking it was the baby's, which I found slightly ridiculous. My pulse was racing out of nerves, but no way was it fetus heartrate fast.

My 12 week appt is next week, and I'm starting to get myself worked up that they won't be able to hear the hb on the doppler because I weigh more this time than I did with my first.

  • @camichael84 I was so afraid of that too since I definitely weigh more this time around.  And of course with my luck I went in today for my 12 week appt. and the doctor couldn't find it after 10 minutes of looking.  He snuck me back to the ultrasound machine for a quick look and I got to see baby wiggling away, so it ended up being a good thing for me that he couldn't find it!

  • @Steephers123 I know I'd get an u/s, and while I'd seriously love that, I'm not sure it's worth the anxiety it'd cause me by not finding a hearbeat at first. I guess I need to go into it trying to remind myself it's not unusual to not always find it on the doppler at 12 weeks.

  • I roasted a chicken yesterday and went to take it off the bones to make chicken salad today... The smell of the cold chicken made me so sick :s
  • Chicken has become one of my food aversions. DH has been tolerating my food aversions really well, but now that I won't eat chicken he is pretty upset. Meal planning is incredibly difficult at this point.

  • Random of the day - just signed up for a CSA for this summer. I've been wanting to for years but always waited too long. Excited for lots of fresh fruit/veggies.

  • I've heard somewhere (and as I'm typing this I think it was on a TV show/book.. Dexter maybe?) That a lot of food aversion are related to meat, and avoiding meat early in pregnancy can help a lot with the morning sickness.

Being a vegetarian I don't know how true that is for myself, but the smell of meat rarely bothers me when not pregnant but makes my stomach flip when I am. Everyone.. come to the dark side of vegetarianism.

  • I roasted a chicken on Tuesday, and the smell yesterday made me gag too! I have had aversions from all meats as well. Also, on the subject of dates: I ate so many freaking dried dates when I was pregnant with DD because I read that they were good for my uterine muscles, and now I can't stand to look at them. I never even liked them in the first place. The texture bothered me so much. It felt like I was biting into a cockroach. I don't know if they did anything for my uterus, but I had an extremely long labor.

  • Congrats @jhems776 - Happy the news went well!

@TheTamedShrew - I think I upped my date intake to strengthen my uterus too.. that sounds familiar. And I totally see the cockroach analogy - I can only eat mine chopped up, not when they look like the critters.

  • @camichael84 I so get that, the anxiety outweighing.  I definitely had to do some deep breathing when my dr. was searching with the doppler.  Fingers crossed your appointment goes well!

    On the food thought...

What are you thoughts on eating sushi? We are heading back down to LA and I'm dying to go to my favorite sushi spot. I've been doing cooked fish only but I'm craving a spicy tuna roll on crispy rice. The tuna cannot be cooked :( It's a very very nice and high end restaurant but I would hate myself if anything happened. My OB was like "Do what feels right" so uh yeah, that wasn't any help. Thoughts??
  • Sitting in a small room in a small group next to someone with very strong body odor. It's killing this pregnant nose! The next 1:20 can't go by quickly enough. I keep holding my hand up so my finger is under my nose, trying to make it look like I am just being thoughtful, but that's not totally doing the trick. Ack!
  • @mom2adoodle I know it's no help, but I agree with your OB. Do what feels right to you. Ultimately, it's your baby and your body. I don't do raw sushi, so I have no point of reference there. However, I like my steaks cooked no more than medium done. The nurse practitioner that saw me when I went in for my first appt with DD was pregnant as well and told me she still ordered hers medium. I never got the courage to do anything but medium-well, which means I avoided steak a lot because I don't like eating leather.

@mom2adoodle i think tuna has a higher mercury content, but still not on the "never" list like swordfish. I ate raw salmon sushi when I was pregnant with DD at a reputable place and it was delicious.

  • @LakeR2014 OMG my dad did that to me while we were on the flight back form Nashville! I wanted to KILL him! It was like a skunk ate a rotten egg and an ancient moldy old sweet potato combined, crapped it out and then died on the pile of crap, and then rotted for a month. You could taste it in the air, and he did it for three hours. I got so, so nauseous, and I was not prone to nausea at that point. Also, that salad sounds amazing!

@PSUBecky23 we had wild storms here last night! 50+ mph winds, thunder, lightning and torrential rain. It was NUTS!

@camichael84 I found that I like prunes too! What's even better is I found chopped up dark chocolate covered prunes at the store the other day! Delicious and good for me? YES PLEASE! Except I probably should pace myself lol- I killed the bag in a few days... but hey, it was only 4 servings...

  • @mamajen10414 Dates with peanut butter are my go-to snack!! I could seriously eat that all day every day. Last year I was on a road trip with friends and I brought my PB/Dates along... they thought I was crazy for eating that every morning in the car for breakfast :)
  • @jhems776 awesome!! I don't even take the BPM when I use the home doppler, just close my eyes and listen to that amazing little sound.  At the office little one was still up around 170bpm, definitely higher than the read out from the doppler (but right on with what I counted for 15 seconds, then multiplied out to the minute).

I got the Sonoline B from FaceLake.  I was going to l link the Amazon page but it isn't there anymore, so weird even the image from past orders is wrong.  Here is a link to another site.   I got mine for 40ish, it seems everyone is about the same, on sale for a pinch less than 40 and claiming the full price is 300 or more.

  • @Blondie080300 - Yeah, I haven't gone anywhere near that board. My energy is nonexistent. I don't need the help of anyone else to feel bad about the things that I should have done but haven't (exercised, cleaned the house, finished laundry) or the things that I have done but shouldn't have (had cookie cake and milk for dinner, eaten bleu cheese dressing & feta, etc.)

  • I just got news that my OB is leaving the practice she works at. I was told I would be transferred to one of the other 2 doctors at that practice. they did have me rotate through the doctors with my last pregnancy, so I have met them. But I'm still bummed. I liked my OB and she delivered my son. I think I might use this opportunity to switch to their partner practice that has a much more convenient location for me.
