Detox Bath?

Has anyone used or does anyone plan to use a detox bath this pregnancy? I know there are mixed reviews/instructions out there on using epsom salts during pregnancy, so to be safe, I'm going to just stay away from those. I was considering using a bath recipe with sea salt,  apple cider vinegar, and baking soda this weekend sometime after the glucose test (not immediately after) in order to clean out a bit. My eczema had been acting up more lately too, and in the past, a good soak has really helped when topical treatments aren't helping anymore. I know to drink room temperature water before, during, and after, but I also don't want to make myself light-headed by doing a major detox...just something mild and simple. Thoughts or experience to share?

Re: Detox Bath?

  • I've continued to use my lavender Epsom salts after consulting with my doc. I take a bath maybe once per month just to ease off any tension in my neck and my low back. It's divine and helps me to sleep!

  • I had no idea Epsom salts were a concern. Thanks for posting this! I was considering getting some to soak my swollen feet but I will stay away from that now!

The literature is mixed on them-- it's one of those things that's labeled to ask your doctor before use if pregnant. Many doctors say yes, others say no. ETA: I'm pretty sure I used them at least once last pregnancy when my feet had gotten pretty swollen.
  • I typically do Epsom salt/baking soda with essential oils baths once a day (sometimes twice) due to my chronic pain condition (I can't take medication so this is my best bet for relief). I asked my ob in CA and my new ob here in VA and they said absolutely no baking soda baths and they were not super excited about Epsom salts but told me if I must, I could take one about once a month. I have a pregnancy allergy to strawberries that I discovered and I get super itchy, so I've been taking oatmeal baths and I'll take a simple essential oils bath with oils that tend to help me with pain.
  • @ncm0328 Good to know! Thank you! Maybe I'll leave out the baking soda; that's the ingredient that I was worried may be too harsh. I didn't see my standard OB last time and the one I saw didn't really have much to say when I asked her. :/
  • @kbrands7 most definitely! The baking soda is what really causes the "sweat out" effect of detox baths. I really needed one this past week for this nasty cold that I've got too, such a bummer. Good luck! I hope you can get some relief from your bath regardless!
  • I personally am not because I am scared of dehydration. I feel like my body is very picky about staying hydrated.  Your bath does sound lovely, though!

  • I do these when I'm not pg. For me personally I hesitate to do them while pg. I do know that Epsom salt does not have the dehydrating effect that regular salt does though. I get easily dehydrated though so that's why I wouldn't chance it being pg.

  • I was pretty sure the Epsom salt thing was against ingesting it as a laxative, as that's one of the uses. I've used it as often as I normally would, but that isn't often (maybe monthly)

  • No baking soda? Haven't heard that one. I've been using a LUSH bath bombs maybe twice a month. Whoops.
