Re: Glucose results discussion

  • @AnastasiaBeaverhausen09 tried that and they told me to talk to my midwife. Ugh!!
OMG I would be lighting my midwife UP.

  • @lalala2004 that's what I thought as well but it was very different in m case. But I do hope everything is good on your end!!
  • I'm calling my doctor tomorrow to verify the results, as it will have been a week for me as well with no news.  If I pass, doughnuts for breakfast on Saturday! If not, I'll start copying recipes from the diabetes cookbooks I borrowed from the library.
  • I got my results back; I have gestational diabetes only by .8 (test results were 11.9 which is considered very high). Going to control with diet and exercise and monitoring the sugar levels. Not too bad I suppose.

I'm sorry. I was really worried about having it as well. Definitely an unsettling feeling but you barely made the cut so it seems borderline. Like you said, not too bad. I always try to tell myself "it could alwaysbe worse" with any situation. I'm sure you'll do fine with a few moderations and have no problem getting good numbers. Hugs.
  • Thank you @kp90!! Yes it could be worse so I'm looking at the silver lining. I am confident I can control it through diet and exercise but it's definitely up to my body to process the sugar lol hoping for the best!!
  • Passed the 1 hour test with flying colors! I got a 68!!! Doughnuts tomorrow, but still working on moderation- had already given up juice, my favorite (sugary) cereal, and reduced sweet treats and fruit/fruit cups to 1 serving per day just in case.
  • I called and I passed! Guess I'll keep eating as I have been, with today as an exception, because students gave me candy and we had the teachers had chili cook off....

Just did my 3 hour this morning and had my TDAP shot.. that was alot of freaking needles. I'm exhausted because I was so stressed out. I really really hope I pass. I'm really afraid of having GD, I<3 my carbs and I'm afraid of dealing with all the daily finger pricks and possibly insulin shots...

Yeah, the tetanus portion of that vaccine tends to cause sore muscles in the area. It should be back to normal in a day or two!
  • Found out this morning that I failed my 1-hr. and have to take the 3-hr. test :( Boooooooo! I passed it with my first two pregnancies. Going to find out my numbers at my appointment this afternoon. Le sigh.
  • 1 hour test taken on monday. Just looked at my online chart. Looks like I passed with no issues. Though the doctor did note the nurse would be calling. Uh, why? Got tdap as well, for the second time in less than a year. No side effects except for a barely sore arm. Though I didn't use it much.
The test was a breeze for me. I thought the glucose tasted fine and had nothing but a momentary headache that may have just been pregnancy. Was kinda expecting a horrible experience. Luckily my doctor is cool with talking about things with me so that ate up most of the hour.
  • My office did the 2-hour test right off the bat and while my fasting and 2-hour draws were way below the caps (25+ points below each), my 1-hour draw was three points over (183).  So I met with a counselor yesterday who told me not to adjust my diet at all - not necessary at this stage, no cause for worry, my eating habits are already awesome (I eat unprocessed like 99% of the time, lots of fruit and veggies, avoid major sweet snacks most of the time - I do love the occasional piece of chocolate, never drink pop or fruit juices or eat fast food, etc etc), to test four times a day for a week, then likely just once a week until I deliver.  My first three tests have all been way under the max end of the range for meal/time of day.  The counselor pretty much said this was going to be nothing but an inconvenience for me and my 183 was probably a fluke, and there's a margin of lab error of +/- 10 points on every testing draw.  Mildly annoying but I'm happy to track if it means happy baby from here on out.  But man.

On top of that, the nurse who called with my results last week said, "We have your results.  You have gestational diabetes.  I've made an appointment with a specialist for you next week."  I was like, "say what?"  And then I asked like 10 questions, none of which she could answer.  The counselor was stunned the nurse delivered my results that way.  Gah.

  • For anyone who hasn't taken the test yet, be sure to call your doctor's office by the day they tell you the results will be in by, if you haven't recieved a call by that time.

I called last Friday and got my results then (a week after I took the test). If I hadn't, I would only have received the generic call today (which I got anyway) - just another five days later.  Personally, nearly two weeks to have recieved test results would have been far too long for me- and I'm sure most of you ladies as well!
  • @laurenmdrn16  - that was, by far, the best explanation I have ever read/heard. Thanks so much! :)

I got a 135 ... not sure what my OB's cut off is ... so do not want to take the 3 hr, but ah well, I will if I'm told to.

My doctor's office cutoff is 130.
  • Smack dab in the middle of the safe range for the one-hour! 102 for a range of 70-139. Word. One less thing to worry about.

Also, thanks to this thread I actually know what-all that means:)

I got 137. My doctor's cutoff is 140. I don't think he's too worried because I failed the 1 hour with DD and passed the 3 hour, but I think some doctors would choose to go ahead with the 3 hour.
  • I took the test yesterday and just got my results this afternoon. 138 for me.

I think my doctor's practice is probably more cavalier about the test than most (I was not told to fast [my doctor literally told me "just don't carry a frappucino into the waiting room"], there wasn't a prelim blood draw before I drank the solution), I went in the afternoon after lunch and nobody asked me what I'd eaten that day or when I ate it, and so in retrospect I guess I shouldn't have been surprised that the number came in on the high end, but I still kinda was.

I'm not at all worried about having GD -- I have no risk factors, no family history, am still well within "normal" BMI even after adding 20 pounds of pregnancy weight, and do the whole exercise/healthy eating thing -- but I am going to be a little cranky if they don't use the 140 cutoff and want me to do a three-hour test after being so casual about the one-hour. Under these circumstances, that is going to feel like a sucker punch and I don't want it.
  • I called for my results today after taking the 3 hour test on Monday and not hearing back. And of freaking course I have GD. This has got to be one of the worst days ever. I'm needlephobic and it was horrible Monday getting jabbed 5 times, now I'm going to have to do it multiple times a day to myself.. this feels like a nightmare. I'm really upset. and carbs are my favorite :(

Whattt, you had to follow up with them when the results were positive for GD? That is absurd, if your results came back with that news someone should of called you asap!

@Sienna516, what you experienced is exactly what I'm afraid of. I'm sitting here, having a crying meltdown because I was supposed to get my results today and none came. I called my OB and they said they had the results, but the doctor has to review them, so they can't tell me anything. All the tech who took my blood kept telling me is, "If they don't call you, it's ok, but if they do, well... "(and she trailed off ominously). No news is not always good news, sometimes it means no one bothered to follow up! Ugh...and DH is all "It's not a big deal, you're freaking out over nothing. You don't have diabetes."
  • Yeah everyone I talked to was like, don't worry lots of false positives with the 1 hour test, I'm sure you'll pass the 3 hour. You won't have GD. And the lab tech had told me the results would be in Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning. I almost called them yesterday, but I didn't want to be that annoying patient. I called today because I've been so anxious about getting the results (lost 2 lbs in 2 days). I've been crying off and on since I've found out the results today(even at work). It's going to be a long 5 months of monitoring this :( (I read you have to monitor 6-8 weeks after baby is born as well in case you permanently have diabetes) I've been reading about the diabetic diet, and I really have no idea what the heck I'm going to eat from now on. I'm a horrible cook, allergic to fish & seafood, and can't handle certain textures (granola/nuts/oatmeal/gritty, cottage cheese, strawberries, etc.). ugh ugh ugh

  • Im just over 29 weeks (though I still think I am actually due a week sooner) and my doc just gave me the slip to get my 1 hour test. When I asked she said I don't need to fast before hand. I saw a lot of people here mention that the most annoying thing was the not eating before the test.  I'm confused. . .Is the fasting something that you only have to do for 3 hour test? or is my Doctor just oblivious? I guess I should call the blood test lab I'm going to and ask them. I really don't want to have to go in twice for this -_-

Feeling nervous about the results. I don't think I have an issue but man has my sugar intake gone up with this pregnancy! Also my mom had GD. I think that raises my risk factor?
  • I was told not to fast for the 1 hour, but to avoid anything high in sugar or carbs and told to fast 8 hours for the 3 hour test

  • I didn't fast before my test -- had my normal breakfast of shredded wheat + skim milk + coffee + almond milk -- and I suspect that's one of the reasons I got a borderline high reading. If you're worried about passing then I would suggest eating lower-carb options on the day of your test and/or avoid eating for a few hours beforehand (numbers vary on this, but most of what I've read suggests that for the 1-hour test, if you don't eat anything for about four hours beforehand you should get a slightly lower result).
  • @Kurrant - It's totally up to your doctor whether you need to fast or not before the 1 hour. Most people who don't fast tend to drop their carbs/sugars lower than usual for 1-2 meals prior to the test to help avoid false positives.

For example, I read all those awful side effects that people were talking about, so I chose to have a few slices of tukey bacon prior to the test so that there would be something in my stomach to help with digesting the glucose (normally don't eat before OB appointments). I ate normally the night before, except that I skipped dessert.

The nurse did ask before the test whether I had anything to eat or not
  • @Kurrant there seems to be a lot of variation in direction to prepare for the one hour. My doctor instructed me to fast for 2 hours before the test. I woke up with enough time to have a hard boiled egg for breakfast before the 2 hour window started because I don't like to take the subway in the morning with a completely empty stomach. I ate normally the day before but had no carbs with dinner, I avoid carbs as much as possible for breakfast and dinner anyway.

@Kurrant, my OB gave me no instructions before the 1 hr, like none at all. After reading things online though, I ate extremely low carb the day before and didn't have anything other than water on the day of the test. If you schedule it first thing in the morning, it will make it easier. I will say that the tech who drew my blood said it was better not to have eaten, not the doctor though, so I'm not sure what that's worth.
  • Thanks for all the advice and input everyone
  • @kurrant My doctor actually told me to eat perfectly normally so as not to skew the test results. I had a bagel with butter and nutritional yeast and a glass of chocolate milk for breakfast (my usual) before going to the doctor.

@siena516 No advice, just creepy internet hugs and good wishes!
