Thrush questions

I have thrush on one of my nipples. I have a dr appt tomorrow but in the mean time I have questions. Can I feed the baby from that nipple or if I have to pump can he have that milk? All I could get from the nurse was to take ibuprofen and use nipple cream and hot water to help soothe it..

So so far the baby does not have it in his mouth and its only on one of my nipples.

Re: Thrush questions

  • Yes, continue to feed the baby from that nipple. It'll be sore so maybe offer the other side first. Both you and LO need to be treated at the same time even if baby doesn't have symptoms. My LO and I are trying to kick a case of thrush right now!

  • ok thank you! @sbandrews86 how did you dr treat it for you and baby? How long does it usually take to go away?
  • How did you know it was thrush, my nipples are kind of red but I can't really tell if it's thrush, they don't hurt.
  • Last night I got this horrible pain in my nipple and like a shooting pain in my boob. So I went and Took a hot shower and some ibuprofen. When I got out of the shower I noticed a white spot on my nipple.. And it hurt to even put a shirt on.. I checked my LO mouth and he doesn't have any white spots and neither does my other nipple.. I'm not a dr so I can't diagnose.. But from what I'm reading it sure sounds like it..   @kdoak2015
  • Theres a couple of threads with more detail information on treatment, prevention etc. I tried copying it unsuccessful but if you search thrush it will come up. Basically Nystatin is commonly prescribed for both you and your LO. Over a week later its barely going away for me. But yes you continue breastfeeding and giving pumped milk, just sanatize all parts daily.

That actually sounds more like you have a milk blister blocking a duct.  Try go remove the white dot and then massage and express the milk.  It should help.  Thrush usually affects both nipples so that also makes me think clogged duct.
  • Ok I will try that! @kelseyofanne  I went to the dr today and he said it's not thrush!
  • @katielwells Just curious, did the dr do a test to rule out thrush or just said it wasn't that based on your symptoms? I'm pretty sure I have it.  :(
  • He looked closely at my nipples both if them and said that it doesn't look like thrush. And he said if it was thrush it would be on both nipples and in babies mouth...

I'm not a huge fan of this dr.. (The dr that delivered my baby no longer works there) but I try to respect his professional opinion. If it gets worse or if my baby starts to show any symptoms I will go to pediatrician.

My thrush didn't look like thrush. My nipples looked almost totally normal and Henry didn't get it. I had horrible sharp pain with let downs and my breasts throbbed like they were on fire. Other than my nipples beings extremely red from a hot shower, I would have never guessed it to be thrush. Diflucan (sp?) and gentian violet cleared mine up. Henry's ped was on vacation and her stand-in didn't want to write him an rx unless he had symptoms, but I called back and pushed for oral nystatin for him. It hasn't come back yet. Fingers crossed.
