Baby won't eat

I'm sorry if this has been posted before, I haven't been here in a long time and I didn't find anything about it so ...

My baby started solids 3 weeks ago and she hates them, she won't even open her mouth anymore or sit at the high chair, I don't want to pressure her but I'm about to lose my patience! How is everyone else doing? Is anyone going trough the same?

Re: Baby won't eat

  • So far my son isn't a big fan of most of the veggies I've giving him. I think I'm going to try fruits first that's how my mom did with me and I eat everything. A previous post was posted about a mom going through the same thing and I got to say every baby is different and some take longer to walk, talk and in you case try food. It's normal. Don't pressure her as when the right time comes she will take it just fine. Try again in a week and see if she takes them of not try again a few days later. Remember technically formula or BM is suppose to be their main food, purees is just for practicing but I'm sure she will take it eventually just give her time mama! Good luck and let us know!

  • Our ped has always said that 'food before one is just for fun;' BM or formula has all of the nutrition that they need, so you're just trying to get them used to new things. It takes a while for them to get used to the texture. Are you doing purees or BLW? My LO isn't a big fan of the texture of purees for sure - he makes a face when we put the bite into his mouth but then gets all excited looking once he gets the taste. He's also more interested in solids if we are also sitting there and eating with him...last night he turned to me while I was eating my dinner and opened up wide for a bite of his own! He is also more interested if we let him hold the spoon. He will (messily) put it in his mouth and get some nibbles that way.

  • We had my son sit with us in his high chair at meal time for a few weeks before we even tried. We started solids 3 weeks ago. We are doing purées twice a day now. Usually a fruit at lunch and a vegetable or sweet potato at dinner. He eats the fruit fine on its own, but I mix in a lot of breast milk in with the dinner purée. If he doesn't like something, I don't push it, and maybe try again later. For example, he hated broccoli on its own, but 3 days later I got him to eat broccoli mixed with sweet potato and breast milk. Don't stress at this point. As PPs have said, the solids aren't their main nutrition at this point. If it's not going well, take a week off and try again later.
  • It's been about 6 weeks for me and my LO still hates it all!  She loves the high chair and hanging at the table, but no interest in baby food.  I agree it's just for fun and she has learned to swallow properly which was the initial goal, so now we just do it twice a day and wait for it all to click. I am really more sad thinking she will be a picky eater than anything else because I LOVE food and cooking! Good luck and don't get frustrated about it, they can totally sense it
  • My LO isn't interested either.  He pretty much refuses to eat for me because he just wants to nurse.  If he even knows I'm there, he'll give DH a hard time but he ate an entire bowl of oatmeal when I was at work the other day.

  • I have been having the same issue. Reading this helped to make me feel better about life https://kellymom.com/nutrition/starting-solids/solids-how/ Just keep trucking! They will catch on eventually.

  • Thanks! She's been having purees mostly but I gave her some raw spinach and she liked chewing it but wouldn't swallow and my son (6yo) was having a pear the other day and she was watching him so I gave her a slice and she licked it every time her brother took a bite, other than that, she keeps her mouth shut and even covers her eyes, but I'm not gonna worry anymore! She still nurses around 8 times each day.
