Other child sick

So my 21 month old has a bad cough and running a fever. This is my first time with one kid being healthy and the other sick. Currently, my husband is with my toddler in one room and I am with the baby in another. Any advice from moms with mulitiple children on how to make sure the other child doesn't get sick would  be great! Thanks!!

Re: Other child sick

  • Are you breastfeeding? Typically if you are, then your body takes note (for lack of a better way of phrasing) of the threatening germs and creates the necessary antibodies and passes them on to the baby, keeping them healthy. That being said, I still keep my kids pretty much separate if my older is sick despite her telling me she "just can't handle it!" When it comes with having to be away from her sister!

  • That is so cute your kiddos can't be apart! Unfortunately, I was unable to breastfeed so I don't have that going for me. I will try and keep Leo (the baby) in his room until Derek is better. It will probably be easier keeping Leo contained than his brother.

We had this just recently. DS who is two had viral pink eye with a serious fever. We live in a small house, so keeping them in seperate rooms wasn't really an option.  I tried to make sure DS stayed as far away from DD as possible. DD is 8 weeks now. DS really likes his sister so this was a bit tricky. I also washed DSs hands a ton and washed my hands after touching my son before touching DD. Thankfully, she didn't pink eye. Good luck!
  • I second pp about trying to keep toddler away from baby. Also make sure you wash your hands and disinfect anything the've touched to kill germs. Hope your LO feels better!
  • We went through this just after Christmas. Everyone was passing the flu around. We didn't try to keep the kids separate figuring whatever he was exposed to, we'd been exposed to already and could as easily pass it. Even with hubby, DS, poppop ( my dad), and I all having it and a couple other colds this winter DD thankfully has yet to get more than sniffles.
  • Wash hands, my 10 year old was sick and I made sure to keep her away from the baby made sure she constantly washed her hands and always had the air purifier running. My aunt is a NICU Manager/nurse and she said most important thing you can do is constantly wash your hands and sing happy bday in your head while washing for the best amount of time to spend lathering the soap.
  • My 2.5 yr old was sick the second week we brought baby home. I was so anxious about it. Lots of hand washing for the toddler (and us!) and I kept them separate at all times. Not necessarily in different rooms but enough space that the toddler wasn't touching or breathing on baby. Good luck!

  • Thanks for all the quick responses so far, it is very helpful! Looks like I will be sleeping in Leo's room with him as my sick ds and husband are sleeping in our bed. Lots of hand washing will be happening in our house. I coach volleyball and am going to bring Leo with me tomorrow so my husband doesn't have to juggle both kids and to keep Leo away from Derek.

  • Change clothes and wash hands often.
Our whole family got a mixture of cold and flu. Two kids had a cold and one had the flu.
Everyone was sick but the baby and myself.
We would shower the kids a couple times a day ( bathe if younger). My husband would change clothes and wash all skin that came into contact with her. It was hard keeping them separated. :(
    but we made it through!
