Any luck with baby cereal?

Has anyone added any fruit or veggies to their baby cereal to get their little one to eat it? And suggestions?

The pediatrician gave the go ahead for other solids such as banana, sweet potatoes, squash, avocados and green beans. My baby is in the low percentile for weight so we're trying to bulk him up. He's eating 3x a day and loves his veggies, but doesn't do well with the cereal. His doctor suggested making it thicker or adding a fruit or veggie.

Re: Any luck with baby cereal?

  • I haven't tried this yet but I'm going to ask his pedi. Ds is also on the lower end for weight about the 15th percentile. I know earths best makes organic cereal mixed with apples or bananas or sweet potatoes that lookks yummy have you seen those? Im thinking of trying them out. Ds just started liking plain cereal so the added flavor will probably help too.

  • Apple sauce and bananas are always a hit. Also pears are pretty good.
  • We've been feeding plain oatmeal to our son for the most part but recently I have mixed his oatmeal now with applesauce, pears, carrots (weird I know) and bananas.  We have had success with all of them except the bananas.  The banana ended up constipating him very badly so we haven't given that to him ever since.  It's just honestly trial by error.  We don't use rice cereal as well because it constipates him too.

  • Also I mix his oatmeal and fruit combinations with a little bit of formula or Breast milk.
  • the rice cereal constipated my LO, but the oatmeal cereal worked well. We use Earth's Best.
  • Each baby is gonna react differently. But my daughter didn't enjoy rice cereal the first week we introduced it... Lol. I use Earth's Best and find that she prefers that brand over Gerber (plus it's organic!).
My daughter loves her veggies over fruits surprisingly. I make my own baby food with organic foods and breast milk. If I notice the veggies are runny then I add rice cereal. (I haven't tried oatmeal with my daughter yet, but figured that'd be a good combo to thicken her fruits!)

hope you find something that works for your baby!!

  • I don't mix the fruits and veggies in cereal. All my kids have hated cereal and prefered their fruits and veggies plain. I keep a fair amount of prunes on hand since introducing new foods often can cause constipation in general. Prunes are great for countering constipation and most babies tend to love them. All four of my kids did.
  • My LO hates cereal. Can't get her to eat it at all. However I mix it with her baby food and she eats it just fine.
  • My LO got very constipated with bananas and a little constipated with rice cereal probably would have been worse but he wouldn't eat much. Sweet potatoes have been the biggest hit so far.
  • I mix all of my son's food with cereal and lately he's been gobbling it up. I mix and ounce of formula with rice cereal then add equal parts fruits or veggies and so far so food. It was rough at first but getting better.
He has plain cereal and formula for breakfast, cereal and fruit for lunch, and cereal and veggies for dinner. Bottles if he wakes up at night or early morning before everybody is awake.
So far he likes bananas, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, and the banana apple pear combo but that and oatmeal gave him a rash so I have to tread lightly with his fruits right now.
  • i'd skip the cereal all together if they don't like it and just give em the fruits and veggies. Cereal really doesn't have any nutritional value, so unless they love it, just give them the good stuff.
  • The cereal is mainly just good for the iron, which is typically close to getting depleted around 6 months. But formula is fortified with iron as well so if you're not breastfeeding (and using formula) then baby should be getting enough iron.
  • My son loves rice cereal prepared with breast milk, mixed with blueberries or mango.
  • I started introducing baby food to my little one about 3 weeks ago, he refuses to eat ANY of it.  He squeezes his lips shut, if i happen to get the spoon in, he automatically spits it out or gags.  I'm not sure what to do to help him with transitioning to solids.
  • We don't give Baby Girl cereal; just real whole food (hasn't stopped my MIL from buying us boxes of it anyway lol). I agree with @Bickey11. If he doesn't like it, don't force it on him. It doesn't have any nutritional benefits except the iron fortification but like @ksimon23 mentioned, formula and breastmilk are already fortified w/ iron. He's not going to get bulked up on foods he wont eat so might as well let him enjoy the veggies you mentioned he likes. Good luck! :)
  • @jesfrey  your lo might not be ready for baby foods yet. What foods have your tried so far? My lo loves butternut squash, but she was very gaggy with it at first, so we made lots of funny noises and used yay's and hand clapping to distract her. I also started by dipping my finger in her food or dipping a teething toy in it and letting her chew on it so she got the taste of it before I spoon fed her, and then I put very small amounts on the spoon. I read that it can take 12-13 tries before a baby likes a new food. We tried avacado and sweet potato first and they were both a no-go. When I'm introducing a new food I also buy a jar or two of it pre-made that way I don't spend all this time making and freezing my own and have her hate it.

We started with baby oatmeal at 4 months and it took a while before she would actually retain any of it. At first we just did a few bites for practice and most of it ended up on me, but that was ok. And she didn't open her mouth for the spoon for a few weeks. But then she just kind of figured it out and decided it was good. I'm not doing rice cereal because I keep hearing that it can make babies constipated.
  • I use baby oatmeal and mix in either apples, bananas, or pears. I make the fruit myself and it's really good! Less tart than the premade baby food.

  • My LO has seemed to like pretty much everything we introduced these past couple weeks but still doesn't jive on the cereal. My ped said cereal wasn't totally a waste so don't skip it altogether but she just doesn't like it. So I sprinkle a bit of it in her fruits or veggies when I can.
