Baby Names

Surname as a first name.

We will be welcoming our first baby boy in April and are having a hard time picking a name. My husband really likes Foxton Theodore. It's a family name and he would really like to use it. I like it a lot too, but I wasn't sure if it really worked as a first name. Thoughts?

  • That's what I was worried about. I don't want it to look like a made up name even though it's not. I do like Theodore Foxton and it sounds good with our last name.
  • Yeah I'd go for Theodore Foxton. I don't like last names as first names but it's a cool mn.
  • Cool, thanks! :)
  • It depends on the surname...some work, some don't. In this case, I really don't think Foxton works as a first name but could be a great meaningful middle name...Theodore Foxton would be a great choice!!
  • My maiden name is Graham. I love that name for a boy, but hubby vetoed. Boo.

  • I think Foxton could work for a middle name but definitely not for a first name.
  • Agreed about using Theodore Foxton for the reasons above.

  • I think Foxton is actually pretty cool in the middle spot and gives an edge to Theodore I like it! You could always use Fox as a nn as well. Theodore Foxton gets my vote

  • I think Foxton seems made up and like you're trying really hard to make Fox happen. I agree that Theodore Foxton is much better.
  • Another vote for Theodore Foxton

  • Thank you! I'm feeling good about Theodore Foxton! ☺️
  • I really like Theodore Foxton! I think that's a great middle name and like others said, you could always call him Fox.
  • Totally agree with everyone. Theodore Foxton is great.
  • I love Theodore Foxton. I like both Fox or Theo for nicknames.

I also really like Graham. It was on our list for DS but didn't sound great with our last name.
  • I am going to go a different direction than most folks here and advocate for Foxton! It's not "made up," sounds great--both cool and intelligent, educated, athletic or artistic--and don't think it should be buried as a middle name for fear of being different. I could totally see a lawyer named Foxton, or doctor or author or scientist. Plus, Fox is ADORABLE for a sweet little toddler. I say go for it!
  • I like surnames as first names when it is a family name... With that said, I might think you made up foxton bc I have never seen it as a surname. I think it comes down to how often you want to explain, spell, and deal with questions every time you say it...
  • Wanted to add... I do like the nn fox. And a mn like Theo allows him to go by that if he chooses
