WDYT of Avery Lynn? Lynn is after both grandmas (my mom's MN and part of MIL's FN. MIL passed away about 15 yrs ago and DH still struggles with the loss) Big sister is Sophie Grace

I feel like it doesn't compare to Sophie at all. It's the Ashley of this generation.

Avery for a girl is NMS. I grew up reading Charlotte's Web, so in my mind it will always be a boy's name.

Lynn is also NMS, but honoring family members trumps whether or not I like a name. It's a name that has lots of meaning for your family, so I would definitely use it.

As a combination, Avery Lynn flows nicely together.

There are SO MANY Ashleys of today. Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava, Charlotte, Harper, apparently Avery, etc. Also, DH and I struggle because we don't like 'different' names so the ones we like tend to be in the top 50-100 and not really past that.

Eh Avery is Ashley because it's masculine like Ashley and has the chance to die off completely and be dated. The others listed are popular yes but not like Ashley. Aside from Harper also masculine and Avery those names are pretty classic popular. While they currently are popular again they also have long history of usage. I just feel like Sophie is such a good solid choice that is timeless and Avery doesn't have that feel at all.

I wouldn't choose Lynn if it weren't meaningful for our family and because of that, I don't like a lot of names with it.

I like honoring a family member with Lynn. Avery is a no go for me.

How about Charlotte Lynn. I am in love wth that name but we don't want to be in the top 10.

Lynn is fine, especially since it's honoring family members. I do not like Avery at all. It's super trendy as a girl's name.

Avery is okay, it just doesn't feel very special to me. If I met two sisters named Sophie and Avery I would think Avery got the short end of the stick. I think you can do a lot better.

I hate to say it, but everytime i hear the name Avery, I think of Avery Labels brand. Maybe its from working in an office for a long time and having to print labels all the time. But i personally think there are such prettier names out there.

I get what youre saying on having trouble both liking something and always ending up within top 100. Maybe you could go to top 100s from many years ago (theres a feature on the SSA site) and see what popular names were farther back and maybe youll still find something you like. Avery is extremely popular right now.

Not a fan of Avery on a girl, its a boys name to me. Love the Lynn part, tho. PP's suggestion of looking at popular names from the past is a good one, I think you might find something that is classically strong but not used as much these days. I also agree that I don't think Avery will age well while your other daughter's name will.

It's okay. To be completely honest, I'd assume that parents of Avery Lynn and Sophie Grace were people that didn't put much thought into naming their children, since both names are popular right now and both middle names are so common. There's nothing wrong with the names, but that's the impression that I get from them.

Why would you assume that any parent didn't put much thought into naming their children? Not your style is one thing, but obviously we put a lot of thought into the names of our children just as any parent does.

We're not set on Avery or any name. Just throwing around ideas and struggling to love something. Thanks for the opinions!

Fair but you liking popular names doesn't make those names any less "Ashley". Name popularity is something to consider - whether you prefer popular names or whether you don't. 

So for me, Avery is a boy's name. I don't side eye it for a girl. I don't like it for either sex.

I love Lynn and honouring your mothers but only so-so on Avery.
I understand the Ashley's of the generation thing because it's traditionally a male name but saying you that it sounds like you didn't put thought into the name just sounds really rude. Obviously we're not reading top 10 lists and were like "ehh good enough". We thought about our baby names for years and when we picked our boy and girl names for when my son was born my son's was just in the top 10 (Oliver) and our girl name was mid-teens (Charlotte). I'd probably be pretty pissy if someone made a comment like that to us. We've had a white board out for months drawing inspiration from things we love, people who have inspired us, etc. And this is after a few years of narrowing down future kids names.

I understand that you come on these boards to get opinions but sometimes expectant mom's can get it pretty harsh here. I lurk because I love baby names and feel very confident in my decisions but I feel bad for the mom's who face criticism.

Where I live, Avery has definitely swung to the girls' side. I actually think it's a lovely name. It flows nicely with Lynn as well. To me, popularity only a "problem" if you have a strong desire for a unique name or to try very hard to have your child be the only one with his or her name. If you like names in the top 50, then go for those!

I don't like Avery as a name because I always think of Aviary and I feel like being named after a giant bird cage is kind of weird. Just me though.
