I just can't help it

Some nights DD wakes up at 4 am (typically around 6am which is perfect), and I have no energy in my body to sit up and breastfeed. We have a futon in the nursery so I side lie with her and we both fall asleep with her attached to my nipple. She probably isn't eating anymore at some point, maybe a drip here and there. Usually we're like this for an hour and then I burp her and put her back in the crib. This morning when I came back to bed I saw 3 hours had passed!! Yikes! I know it's so wrong but I can't help it.... Does anybody else do this? It's just that she will never detach on her own so I never know when she's done. So if I have time I let her stay an unreasonably long time.

My son usually falls asleep while still attached. I have been sharing a bed with him recently, so I get into position to feed him where I want him to sleep. That way I don't have to move him and risk waking him up after feeding. I actually fell asleep with him attached last night, then woke up with him snuggled under my arm. I always lie in a way, that if I fall asleep, I'd roll backwards, not onto him. Sometimes I just pull away from him, he often carries on sleeping. If not, he will start sucking again. I have to admit, I don't usually burp him at night after a feed. I just let him sleep. I have a rocker, but don't ever use it at night. It's easier to just feed him in bed while lying down.

  • We bed share and have been doing side by side feedings in the morning. It saves my back and we both fall asleep. I have her nestled in the crook of my arm. Like the previous poster said, I can roll to my back after she finishes. I also don't usually burp her after night and early morning feedings. She doesn't seem to need it then.
  • See, I feel guilty and paranoid when I don't burp during night feeding. Because she really does dose off and all but I'm afraid later she'll spit out a lot and lie in it.

  • Plumpous, does she nurse for long/eat a lot at night? If not, maybe you can sip the burping?
  • When LO wakes at night I bring him in bed and side lay to feed him. He's usually in bed with me from 4-730 when we get out of bed. Lately it's been more since he's been sleeping worse than normal. He lets so when he's finished and we end up just cuddling or he ends up a few inches from me, but never too close to the edge. SO has gotten used to this so the times he's in between us SO senses him and doesn't roll towards me. It works well for us and I'm über protective in my sleep. I always have an arm by him and I wake at every move and sound
  • I don't see anything wrong with what you are doing. Just put a pillow behind your back, which will allow you to place more weight in that direction. I side feed him and sleep nightly, encouraged by my lactation specialist. I don't burp my little guy either at night and he does fine. If he spits up, he turns his head and we clean it when we awake.
  • We just got a new sofa that reclines and I noticed that I fell asleep while he was feeding the other night. With all the latch issues I had earlier I never thought I would get to the point I could relax enough to sleep while he was eating. :D
I had a mom tell me one time she fell asleep nursing and woke up and it was time to nurse on the other side so she picked up her LO and switched her around and started over. Hehe.

I don't burp him after nighttime nursing and don't burp him after nighttime bottles either. I do hold him upright over my shoulder for 20+ minutes after a bottle though. He usually burps on his own. He doesn't seem to spit up any more or less than usual.

Also we bedshare and nurse side to side almost nightly. I'm trying to get away from it though simply because I can't sleep that way. He's fine, but it's too uncomfortable for me.
