6 month shots

Hey there! Just wondering if anyone has taken LO to their 6 month appt and how your LO was after the vaccinations? My LO has had no problem up to this point- but my pediatrician talked me into giving my daughter a flu shot on top of the vaccines and I think it was too much :( she was inconsolably crying all morning and spiked a 103 fever! Tylenol is helping a little, but she's still extremely clingy and fussy, I think she's uncomfortable :( I'm so mad at myself for not waiting on the flu shot. I know it's a touchy subject, but if you haven't gone yet make sure you think about how much is being put into your baby's body at once and don't let yourself get talked into something you're not comfortable with!! Also, if anyone has any suggestions on how to combat the fever besides Tylenol I'd appreciate it, I just want to make her feel as comfortable as I can :(

Re: 6 month shots

  • At 6 months you can start giving your LO baby Motrin. Also baths help bring fevers down and I think it also helps soothe them bc its relaxing.

  • Mine has her appt tomorrow and I decided I'm going to decline flu shot for now. I figure I can go back for that. Just the normal round of shots is stressful enough. Hope your LO feels better soon!!
  • Thank you, we gave her a Luke warm bath tonight and it helped to calm her, she's sleeping now, I hope her fever doesn't spike tonight :/
  • Good luck with your appointment tomorrow!
  • My appoint met is today too! I hope your little one feels better mama!!
  • Just reading this but glad I went with my gut instinct. My dr tried to talk me into flu shot as well. I just didn't feel comfortable doing that many shots at once! Didn't get it and baby is perfectly happy and normal all day. I nor my husband has ever gotten the flu shot so I'm so unsure if I should get it for her..
  • There is no data evaluating concomitant administration of the flu vaccine with other vaccines. It even says so on the package insert of the flu vaccine. We won't be getting it with his 6 month shots if the doctor suggests it. We'll go back in a month and get it.

Appt went well, they asked me twice about flu shot! Well, the nurse 1 time and dr 1 time...I matter of factly said no and we carried on. No pressure from them. Whew.
  • My little had his shots crying like crazy made me tear up. But no problems after, he didn't get the flu shots.
  • Just as another idea - we got the flu shot at her 6 month and deferred her dTap for 10 days. It didn't effect the timing of the dTap as it still fell within the correct timing. I am totally on the same page as all of you that it is too much all at once especially since my daughter has gotten a bit fussy with all her vaccines since 3 months. I just personally felt that the flu was a more "imminent threat" than dTap and she already has had some dTap before and I had mine while I was pregnant. No matter what you choose good luck and hope every baby keeps being healthy !! It's hard making these decisions and keeping them safe, but I always tell myself it is all for the long term good!
  • Just to give another opinion on this for others...I had read this thread the day before my LO was going in for her 6 month. The Dr asked us about the flu shot and she didn't push us but just said she highly recommends it. I asked her if it would be too much doing an extra shot and she said no it's just 1 extra shot but no big deal. We ended up doing it, and LO was totally fine. I mean she obviously cried when she got the shot, but she was fine after that. She actually recovered quicker than she has previously and stopped crying immediately once my husband picked her up. So if you think the flu shot is important then just wanted to give an example to others reading this that an extra shot wasn't a big deal. Only bummer is you have to go back in a month to get a booster flu shot.
  • We had our appt yesterday and she got all the scheduled shots including the flu shot and my LO was fine. She cried like she always does but this was the first time she didn't get a fever. Her legs are still sore today, which is new. But, otherwise she's fine.

Everyone reacts differently, though. I'm sorry your precious had a hard time with it and I hope she feels better today!

  • we have ours tomorrow, and I haven't had a flu shot since I was like five, mainly due to an egg allergy, but I do not think I would like my son to get one. Hopefully my pedi won't ask about it though... I really dont want to go, I have to go alone again :/ wish us luck!

  • DS got his shots yesterday, including the flu shot. Because he didn't get the Hib vaccine, he got the same number of pokes as he had at his 2 month and 4 month (three plus one oral). He of course screamed when they were given and then as soon as I picked him up, he calmed down. He was a little fussy last evening so I gave him some Tylenol. He went to bed at his normal hour and then for the first time ever, he slept completely through the night. From 7:30pm to 6:30am. I had to get up a few times in the night to make sure he was okay because he has never done this before. He usually wakes at least once, if not twice. He then woke up happy as a clam this morning ready to play. So, we did not have a bad experience at all. Hoping others have the same experience as we did. Of course, every baby is different so just listen to your ped. Good luck!

I'm glad others little ones had a better experience than mine. It's definitely unpredictable how each individual child will react, I just wanted to share my experience and seek some advice. I'm definitely pro-vaccine as I'm a special education teacher and have read extensive research between the link (or lack there of) of vaccines to disabilities. Sadie recovered quickly as her fever only lasted a day but now she has a cold :/ I swear it never ends lol
  • My LO has his 6 month appointment on the 19th... He cried during the shots but when DH picked him up he was fine, we usually give him a bottle right after he gets shots. Gave him a bath before bed and was fine all night. He still has a cold so Dr. Recommended not giving him the flu shot, and said i can bring him in after he gets over the cold to get the flu shot. DH and I decided we are not going to do it.
  • Our pediatrician asked if we had started solids. We said yes. Then she asked about eggs. We answered no. She decided against the flu shot for now. So it was 5 shots and an oral vaccine.
