EBF Vitamin D drops...

What's the consensus on this? My daughter was just prescribed these at her two month visit and I was wondering if any of you ladies declined to give them to your babies. My aunts (both pediatric nurses) as well as three friends I have who are nurses, have told me that these drops are unnecessary and that our bodies provide all the nutrition the babies need. The way that our bodies adapt to their needs as the babies grow and change is really amazing. I'm not looking to be bashed as I haven't made a decision either way. I am just wondering what you ladies are all doing!

Thanks!

Re: EBF Vitamin D drops...

  • I ebf so I give my baby the drops. Vitamin D is a vitamin that our bodies don't produce naturally (or sth like that) hence the need for the drops. However I also read somewhere that if you as the mum take vitamin D supplements then you may have enough to pass to the baby. I chose to give the drops because I know vitamin D is essential so I'll rather he have it than not. It's not like it's a potentially harmful medication anyway

  • Thanks for the input! I was feeling the same way...its not as though it could harm her at all--its just vitamins! :)
  • I give them when I remember

  • I take d3 myself every day, but it doesn't pass readily into bm. So, they do get some from us but it isn't nearly enough. We also don't ( for good reason) expose our infants to enough sun to synthesize D3 from its composites. Make sure you get one that is D3 not just D fit the above stated reason. It wouldn't be catastrophic if you opted not to use it. It's a newer recommendation anyway. That being said it is a much better idea medically to give it. Just because our children can currently survive with a deficit doesn't make it a good idea. I use Nordic naturals brand. They are a great company and you should be able to find them at a health food store... I like them also because the suspension is organic Olive oil. I have given them since our 2 week visit.

I was giving my daughter the D-Vi-Sol vitamin D supplement made my Enfamil (pediatrician recommended) ... Long story short you have to give 1ML a day (which is kind of a lot to me) and it was making her throw up ... It contains citric acid, Carmel color and all these other things I really didn't want my baby having. I also tasted it and it tastes horrible :(

I found an organic vitamin D3 liquid supplement that only requires one drop a day for your baby .. My daughter loves it and it actually tastes great lol! :) I ordered it from vitacost and it's actually cheaper than the enfamil D-Vi-Sol ! :) the brand is Childlife Essentials Organic Vitamin D3 Drops Berry -- 400 IU ... The only complaint is that it takes a little while for the drop to come out but my daughter just holds her mouth open and waits for it lol
  • I give mine a drop a day as per the paediatrician
  • I EP, and give poly vi sol to DS (enfamil) once a day, based on my ped's recommendation. It is a multi vitamin supplement.

  • Breastmilk alone doesn't have enough of the Vitamin D babies need, that's because... Our bodies are so smart, they expect us to get the rest from the sun. The human body never ceases to amaze me. Anyway, I'm giving my baby them because it's winter and we aren't going to be getting out much. Once summer comes I may stop.
  • @danniellemichellexox I feel like we'd be friends in real life! I tasted the Enfamil ones the doctor prescribed and it was DISGUSTING and as I filled the dropper with the entire 1 mL I couldn't do it! Thank you for the recommendation for the other drops. I will be purchasing those instead!!
  • @sarapagan seriously! Lol I'm glad ! I'm sure your baby will love them as much as mine does :)

I got a similar one from Whole Foods, the brand is Carlson. Since it takes so long for the drop to come, I just put it on the nipple before feeding LO, so he gets it all nicely.
  • @mihaelams1 that's an awesome idea !!
