Names?

Does anyone else have names picked yet? With DS it was a constant argument / discussion with DH. We named him a few days after he was born.

This time I feel lucky! We both love Julia for a girl and Alex for a boy.

What about you?

Re: Names?

  • We have about 3/4 picked out for each sex.
With our son, we had names before we were even pregnant.

I have a feeling we will be taking a list of names to the hospital and choosing after the birth.
  • Loading the player...
  • We have names picked :) For a while now. It wasn't easy (DH is quite picky.."That name sounds too this, that name sounds too that") but we got 'em down!

We actually really like Luciano for a boy, it can be shortened to Lucas if we want, and I really like the sound of both of those. He is Italian and I am French, I prefer the pronunciation of Lucas in French, not crazy about the English pronunciation.

For a girl we think Meika. It is simple so no need to shorten it and it is beautiful. Meika is a German name, it was originally written Meike but plenty of people write it as Meika (it is pronounced the same either way, with an -a at the end) and that would be a nice touch for my German heritage.

We have no idea about middle names, neither of us even HAVE middle names so :/ We may decide to go a little traditional and pick the names of godmother or godfather, that would be a nice touch I think. We won't baptize so it is more symbolical.
But if it is a girl then it would be Meika Mayika, it is very similar so maybe it is a little weird. The baby's godmother is Congolese. The godfather I would let my husband pick one of his friends, so I don't know yet, it would either be Edwin, Edward or Joshua none sound too good with Luciano so maybe it is a silly idea :D

  • We picked a girl and boy name before we even got married.  If we have a girl, her name will be Lilly Ann.  After DS was born we talked about needing a new boy's name.  I really like Henry but DH says that his family will probably turn it into Hank, even if we say we're not ok with that.  I hate Hank and don't want to fight that battle so I think Henry is out.  I asked DH again last week if he had thought any more about a new boy's names and I was shocked that he had actually been thinking about it!  He said he's really been liking either Carson or Carter lately.  We're pretty decisive when it comes to names and I prefer Carson (sounds better with DS's name) so that will very likely be our choice for a boy.  For a middle name, we might go with Archer this time.  It's my maiden name but I just didn't have the guts to use it with DS because it seemed too odd.  Archer is becoming a common boy's name though so we might use it as a middle name if we have another boy this time around.
  • If we have a boy he will be named after my Dad who passed when I was 7.  If it's a girl we have a few contenders.  We probably won't discuss it much until we know the sex so we don't waste energy.

  • We don't have a girl name.   Girl names are always hard for us.  Last time we liked Penelope and Brooke.  (Baby #3 was supposed to be Brooke but after she was born we decided it didn't fit her and named her Macy).  But I'm not sure I'm crazy about them anymore.  If Macy was a boy she would have been Lucas Michael (Michael will definitely be the middle name after my dad, if it's a boy).  But my friend recently had a boy and named him Luke.  So I hesitate to use it.  We don't see each other often at all so it probably wouldn't be a huge deal and we would likely use Lucas most of the time instead of Luke.  My only other boy name at the moment is Blake Michael.  We won't officially choose the name until after birth.

  • We picked names very easily last time, but this time DH and I are having a hard time agreeing on anything. My top contenders for a girl are Amelia and Ava. DH vetoed Ava and is "okay" with Amelia, so that's probably what we will end up going with if we have a girl. Boy names are so difficult! I tossed around Gavin, but I don't love it and DH isn't sold on it either. I look at lists and baby name sites but I just can't find a boy name that I love.
  • Right now we have Sadie for a girl and Jesse for a boy...we'll see if it changes as the pregnancy progresses- I don't have middle names picked out but I like Sadie Julia

  • Alexander David for a boy and Hannah for a girl. Haven't decided on a middle name for her just yet. We also love Elise for a girl.
  • We have ours picked out!  I'm a fan of unisex names, so we're going with the same name (Logan) whether we're having a boy or a girl, just the middle name will be different: William, after my favorite uncle, who passed away when I was in high school, or Alexandra, after a friend.

If it's twins, one will be named Logan (the boy if it's boy/girl twins) and the other will either be named Riley (boy or girl) or Harper (girl).

There's a very small chance that I may change my mind if it's just one girl and go with Harper (because I love the name and so do both my husband and my mom), but I've been dead set on Logan for years now.

The only problem I'm having is if we have twins and one is a girl and we go with Harper, I'm torn between middle names.  I was originally thinking Elizabeth because I like the way it flows together, but I'm also really set on using Alexandra.  The only problem is that Harper Alexandra would make her initials HAM and I'm hesitant to do that.  My mom's maiden initials were ASH and then when she got married, they became ASS, so I'm a bit sensitive about awkward initials, although HAM is definitely better than ASS.

  • If we have a boy, I'd love to name him James or have it as his middle name. That's my dad's name and the poor guy has four girls and granddaughters...no boys besides son-in-laws. I'm toying with using James for a girl's middle name. Or maybe using my maiden name as a middle name for a girl. My husband absolutely hates that idea. Too different for him.

I way overthink names and so many girls names remind me of girls that I know and then I don't want to name my child that because I associate the name with that person. We are pretty traditional when it comes to names. And it takes us forever to agree on a name.

My girl favorites are Ava, Anne/Annie, Isla (although I like it pronounced eye-la and I feel like a lot of people would say iz-la). We named my daughter Mia (me-ah) and you wouldn't believe the number of people who call her Maya (my-ah). It drives me insane. As I was reading the comments, I saw the name Evelyn and I think I might add that to the list.

  • Yup. I'm so scared that someone will take one of my chosen names. I made the mistake of telling a cousin a name I had always loved, after my grandmother, and she took it for her DD.. and this cousin has a different grandma, so they didn't even name her after anyone. grrr. So I had to go back to the drawing board on that one.

  • I'm with you on the name association thing, @LizC216, but only when it comes to people I don't like or close friends/family members children (I don't want to use the same name as they did because I'd feel like I was stealing it, plus it would just feel awkward to me).

My niece is named Ava and my friend's sister's daughter is named Evelyn.

  • When I was pregnant with our first our girl name was Lillian Elaine and will probably stay the same if we happen to be team pink this time! We also like the name Astoria after a neighborhood we lived in in NYC when we first met.  But it cant really be shortened to anything, maybe Astor, and we both don't like Tori.  The boy is much easier! A combo of DHs grandfather Monte and my dads middle name Ervin.  This would have been our first boy name but my DH is a Jr so our first is Robert Michael III, but we call him Bobby :)

  • We named DD when she was 12 hours old (though we had a good list before then). We named DS1 the day of his anatomy scan (though we saved his middle name until after delivery). While that was fun too, we both decided that we much preferred the experience of meeting our baby and then picking a name. It's just such a sweet moment to look at them and ask, who are you? Thus, DS2 was named a few hours after birth as well, and I doubt we'll ever finalize a name again before meeting our baby.

That said, all of our babies have had nicknames until birth: Little One, Nelo (short for new little one), Dumpling, and now Sprout. This keeps up from calling the baby "it" for nine months.
    Mommy to N (3), J (2), and C (10 months). LO4 is due in mid-September.

  • ***Question towards the bottom***

I loved names even before finding out I was pregnant/TTC. I had a girl and boy name picked out for awhile but now that I am pregnant I am not 100% with the choices anymore.  Girl is/was to be Amelia Dawn. FIL name is Don and they tend to pronounce his name Dawn due to having midwest/southwest accents. Boy is/was to be Zane Patrick.  I loved the name Zane before the band OneDirection even existed. Patrick is our good friends name however we live in different states now and barely talk.

DH is bound and determined to follow and use the intials his brother and father/grandfather have, DAC. The kicker: DH intials are SMC.  I don't feel like it is a big deal to follow DAC intials if he didnt get the same intials.

On top of that his choices for names (Boy names only) Deidrich and Donald.....No just no. Donald is his Grandfather and Don is FIL. I dont like either names. I want our child to have his/her own identity but I dont mind using realtives names as middle names.

I love the name Dawson but a old girlfriend named her 10 month old Dawson.  We are only FB friends and havent seen or hung out in years.  Would it be weird or stealing to use that name?

Girl names I am falling in love with Everly, Willow and Harper and like 12 more names that I wont list.

  • @Smashbox29 If you love the name Dawson, use it!  I don't think it would be weird at all, even if an old girlfriend did it before you!  If you never see her, no big deal.  The only time I would avoid using another child's name is if that child is directly related to me or is the child of a very close friend of mine.

Oh, P.S.  I LOVE your girl names.  :)

@nicosh8 - if we had a girl the first time around her name would've been Rosalind or Roslyn. We were trying to figure out the most "phonetic" way of spelling it without it being uniquely spelled. I feel like it's lost the Spanish luster not spelled the traditional way! Would you pronounce it "Roz-ah-lin"? That's what we are going for. DH wanted to throw a "z" in there but I hate creative spellings. It's def our preferred name if it's a girl this time around.
  • @Smashbox29 take that name and run!! I don't think it's stealing at all!
  • I really really love the name Brooke but our last name starts with O and I didn't want her initials to be B.O....what do you guys think?

  • @RedMar I think it's such a beautiful name. We would pronounce it Rah zuh lind. (I think) I prefer that pronunciation but DH also likes the d silent. I have seen a few pronunciations and they are all pretty but that does worry me about this name. I don't want child to have to constantly correct everyone. DH also suggested Roslyn but I don't like it as much with that spelling. Haha. I'm glad someone else likes the name and knows the struggle!

  • @nicosh8 - yes I like both spellings... I do worry about it being pronounced "Rose-ah-Lin" if we were to throw an "a" in the mix.
  • DF and DS are both C first names. I am M. Let's see what we can come up with. Michael and Matthew are both out. DF & DS have them as middle names. The middle name Grace is already taken by my SIL and distance friend.
  • This has been a battle long before we even decided to start trying. Only now, it's for real! I love Peyton, Emerson and Avery for a girl, but dh LOATHS them. :( He's thrown in a couple options that I'm not opposed to, but we are finding girl's names much easier than boy's in general. I love Callan, Sawyer and Camdyn, but again, dh hates. He's being so incredibly stubborn, it's infuriating. The worst is he hates my boy name suggestions, but when I ask him what he likes, he doesn't have anything. UGH! This is by far causing me the most stress.
  • I love Avery.  It's on my list of potential middle names for down the road (assuming we have another baby in need of naming, of course), but I'd happily use it as a first name.

I like Sawyer, too, but I know my husband would hate it.

  • We named DS as soon as we found out he was a boy (13 weeks/blood test) and this time I want to wait until the baby is born - although I did like referring to him by his name throughout the pregnancy. That being said I think we are pretty set on Elliot for a boy. We are thinking about Nora for a girl, but I'm not too sure. In Denmark it's Clarabell Cow's name and I just have a hard time shaking that association lol. One of our "conditions" is that the name has to sound almost the same in Danish as the English pronunciation (DS is Sebastian).
  • @Shiva14 This is OT, but I love your profile pic (and screen name). When DD was first born and I was doing nothing but nursing and watching TV, DH and I binge watched The League. Hilarious show.
