Booo! Sick! Ugh

Just venting. DH had an upper respiratory infection all last week. I spent an entire week spending minimal time at home and even slept at my parents house. Downed OJ, tea, and tons of water and spent last night home because he got antibiotics for himself so I thought all was clear (even after lysoling and cleaning everything). Little did I know I got a New Years morning surprise! Sinus infection and post nasal drip! Yippie! I've been trying water and tea all day and finally caved. I just bought some Tylenol cold and flu. Let's hope this works. Usually when I get this every year, I'll need an antibiotic. Uggggghhhhhh. :s

Re: Booo! Sick! Ugh

  • I just caught my daughters cold too. It will be my second or third cold since being pregnant (yay toddler germs!) last time I held out as long as I could and only took regular Tylenol sparingly until it obviously became a sinus infection and was getting worse. Hope you feel better!

  • I've read conflicting things about Sudafed PE. Some sites say yes and some no. Anyone have more info ? And
  • I have a list of "approved" medications from my dr that I got at my first visit. Basically Tylenol and benedryl are safe.
  • My doctor days regular sudafed is fine. Thank the Lord because it's been a life saver the last couple of days!
  • @wsgjmw1 I'd go by what your doctor says. Every doctor is different apparently. Example pp list above says no PE. My doctor says any Tylenol product even with PE. See completely opposite answers. Go with what your doctor says.

  • Sudafed is cat. C, so it should only be taken when the risks of not taking it outweigh the risks of it crossing the placenta. It also raises blood pressure, so it shouldn't be taken if you already have issues with high blood pressure. If your bp is normal and you're terribly congested, it's usually considered okay in the second or third trimesters.

Every doctor is a bit different on their recommendations though. Mine only lists cat B drugs as readily acceptable, except for rescue inhalers, so no cold meds for me.
  • You can also ask your pharmacist if you need spur of the moment guidance. My husband is a pharmacy and in the past year they are starting to reclassify drugs during pregnancy since so many fall into category c only because no research has been done. Not all drugs are part of the new system yet (the new one gets rid of the letter classification) but some are and worth checking!
  • Worst night of sleep. My throat is on fire. I think I might use the trick of what pp said and ask my pharmacist. I can't even swallow warm water without it hurting. This is going to be a long weekend.
  • Most pharmacists won't give you medication advise if you're pregnant because all OBs differ. They will tell you to consult them. If you haven't tried a netti pot it's worth a shot. I prefer the squeeze bottle instead of the actual pot but it uses a warm salt water solution to move mucus out of nasal passages and decrease inflammation. It takes some getting used to but it works wonders and doesn't need doctor approval.

This. My doctor will allow me to take Tylenol and told me I can take Benadryl if my allergies get too bad, but he doesn't want me to take any cold medicine at all. I can also use my inhaler if my asthma starts acting up.
  • Thanks ladies , it sure is amazing how each OB differs ! I'll call mine today to get her advice .

It really is. And how things change. When I was pg with my DD Sudafed was considered safe. Now it isn't. That was only 4 yrs ago.

  • Doctors really do differ. Mine considers sudafed safe.

  • Neti pot!! I have used it sporadically in the past but until this week of illness I hadn't done it consistently multiple times a day. Wowza, it's quite national geographic, but I recommend keeping up with it even if sometimes nothing comes out!

FWIW my midwife recommended Clor-Trimeton (4 hour) but it didn't do squat. Turned out I had a raging sinus infection so I ended up on a zpak. This always happens when I'm pregnant!
