NT Scan and Gender

I got my NT Scan today at 11 weeks 3 days. The sonographer (also a doctor) said she was 85% certain we are having a girl based on the angle of the nub. I'm scared to get too excited, as we have 2 boys. Anyone know if she can really be so certain this early?

  • Being only 11 weeks I'd say it's too early to tell just based on an ultrasound.

  • I thought at that point it's a nub either way? Tlel me if I'm wrong
  • Yes. It has a nub either way. She was going off of the angle of the nub. Both my boys were standing at attention at this point. This babies was flat even with the spine
  • Lady parts look like boy parts and boy parts look like girl parts at this stage. I think it is bad on the part of the sonographer to guess either way this early
  • She'd have to have a very exact angle to make that sort of guess. Congratulations either way! You'll probably find out at your anatomy scan and as long as the baby is healthy, that's what matters!
  • I had my NT scan today and she asked us if we wanted an educated guess. She was doing a vaginal ultrasound. We said yes and she said girl! She said it was because there were three lines from the "potty shot". She said no guarantees but later on she got another view and she said she's confident it's a girl. I'm not banking on it but it's fun to get a guess.
  • Same here. I'm 13 weeks and had my NT scan. The tech told me girl and spent a couple minutes looking the baby from different angles. This is my third and I saw the three lines too. I guess we will see if that's still true come my anatomy scan.
  • My friend was told at her 20 week ultrasound that there was an 85% chance she was having a girl. Baby was being shy. Twenty weeks later she delivered a boy! I would wait for another ultrasound before buying any girl items!
  • We are getting official Panorama results in a week so we will know for sure then. Just curious as to what everyone else thought. And, yes, a healthy baby is most important. Would just be awesome if we got a girl as this is our last
  • She wasn't basing it off of its parts, she was basing it off the angle of the nub. Boys point 30 degrees upwards and girls are straight if you get a good side shot. Would she had to for the scan anyways
  • Not to play Debbie downer but a good friend of mine was told girl at her NT scan due to the three lines she gave birth to healthy little boy :) so just be aware at this stage unless blood confirmed it can go either way

Someone I went to high school with was told girl at the NT scan. Then she was told girl at the anatomy scan. Then she was told girl in her 3rd Tri when they were checking fluids. She delivered a healthy boy. Because everything she received as gifts had been washed, she couldn't return anything. Everything she owned was covered in pink, the nursery was done, and she was a hot mess after finding out they were wrong. She wasn't disappointed it was a boy, but had it in her head for over half her pregnancy it was a little girl, she had a hard time wrapping her head around what had just happened.

The rest of the children she had later, she decided not to find out the sex until birth. HAHA

  • @PhoebeJune1984 My mother jokes that I was a 'Hitchhiker' in the womb. She was told up until the moment I was born that I was a boy.
  • I got told boy last pregnancy based on the angle of the nub which was correct.

I think sonographers are pretty skilled and have seen baby bits enough time to take a guess, but I wouldn't be off buying baby stuff off it.

Little boy due July 31st 2016

  • @Nerdchild I toast and slow clap you that is awesome!

You say that until you become my mother! LOL. She constantly tells me to 'Stop being your father's daughter', because he was just as reckless with his own safety. We were all shocked that lung cancer got him, we were sure he was going to be murdered by someone because he stopped to help the wrong broken down car.
  • Sorry to hear about your dad! But sounds like a good man.

  • So the NT is different than the harmony accuracy wise?We got our results and it said I'm having a boy.

Here's an extremely oversimplified explanation. Blood tests are looking for a Y chromosome. As a women you won't have one. If they find one - you're having a boy because it's coming from the baby (XY) If they don't find any Y then you're having a girl (XX). The purpose of the test is to find chromosomal abnormality- the "perk" is that the 23rd chromosomal pair is XX or XY.

The NT is just an ultrasound and typically 12 weeks is too early to guess because the parts aren't big enough or defined enough. This is why an anatomy scan isn't done until usually 18-20 weeks.

Anatomy scans primary goal is to make sure body parts are developing correctly, including genitals.

The blood test therefore will always be more accurate than an ultrasound.

Actually my NT included a blood draw they use it to look for abnormalities

  • Sorry let me clarify. I mean the other blood draws like harmony panorama maternity etc etc etc.

My NT was only a finger stick and solely checked chromosomes 13, 18 and 21 - not 23 which is why you don't get a gender prediction from that blood work

I also got blood work done for my NT scan but it will not tell us the sex of the baby. Hopefully the a/s will be correct!

  • You're correct @Lindsayleigh1989, it's on the list on noninvasive screenings. We went with harmony because of the 99% accuracy rate. Which is what I was asking about. The accuracy rate of NT compared to Harmony.

Yeah my insurance wouldn't cover harmony for me which is why I went with the NT. I wish I had been able to have harmony but I got 1/10000 odds for all three so I'm happy and I'm okay waiting until February to find out the sex.

  • My insurance did not cover it either or else I would have done it. We made our a/s appointment for February 9.

  • Our doctor told us about the harmony people using a self pay method with an out of pocket cost being 130.00 compared to 500.00 which would have been my insurance.

  • @Nerdchild I'm Internet crushing on you so hard right now. You had me at .380 .......
  • My friend was told girl and had made bedding and curtains for her nursery. Picked out a name and everything. Found out at the 36 week ultrasound that she was having a boy. She delivered a healthy boy. Guess you never really know until the baby is born.

  • It's easier for them to guess when it's a boy. That said the just told my friend "85% sure it's a boy" and 1 week later their NIPT came back girl

  • I was told most likely a boy at my NT scan, however I'm waiting until the later ultrasounds to know for sure, not holding my breathe that it actually is a boy.

  • Can I be ignorant for a minute and ask about all these blood tests? My last OB appt he asked if we wanted to do any genetic screening and we said no, but I see so many women on here getting bloodwork and all these tests done (not going to lie, I would love to know baby's sex earlier), but we aren't exactly high risk for any type of "genetic issues" so I assumed I would have to shell out a pretty penny for any extra tests since insurance will probably see them as unnecessary? Sorry I didn't exactly phrase this in the form of a question, but is the extra bloodwork really necessary?
