Infertility

Newbie, hello! (loss mentioned)

Hi there - so here goes. After more than a year TTC (including one very early MC last March but there were 3 positive tests), we went to the fertility clinic for tests. We had the whole gamut including HCG and a few days before Christmas got our results. I have one blocked tube but "more eggs than average" and a good hormone level for my age and DH has azoospermia (no sperm). We are devastated but waiting a few MORE months now for an appointment at the male clinic. Apparently his condition is extremely rare. We MAY be able to extract sperm - but there are most tests to do, genetic ones, to see what kind of azoospermia he has. It's hard to find stories about this online and everything I've read seems to indicate that we'll probably have to use donor sperm. I'm so disappointed that it will take months for our next appointment.

Also! I was pregnant - how did THAT happen?

So now we're dealing with the fact that DH may not be able to have biological kids at all (he is heartbroken) and it's most likely that I'll need IVF either way (and we'll probably have to pay for it although my insurance will pay for meds). It's been a lot to take in. I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with azoospermia? It's been a tough few weeks dealing with this but I was glad to find this forum.

(I couldn't figure how to put my info in a signature - I'm 35 and DH is 32)

  • Welcome and I'm sorry you're here.  I'm not familiar with what your DH has or have any experience but just wanted to show some love.  Goodluck to you and I hope you'll find better answers.

  • Thanks so much @plumeria05 - I'm sorry I'm here too but also glad to be here. It's nice to read about others' experiences and when I (hopefully) go through IVF I'll have a group of people to talk to about it.

  • You're definitely in the right place.  All of us here are very supportive and you always learn something.   Others don't understand this journey unless you're going through it. My DH and I did 2 IUI's and 2 IVF's but both failed so the dr suggested we go the donor route.  Yes I was devastated and heartbroken at first but I wanted a child more than having a child with my DNA.  After I got over that, my husband had a very hard time with it.  I told him that I will be carrying this child so it will still be mine.  I completely understand your DH's feelings.  It's a very tough journey but whenever you feel frustrated or sad or lonely, there's always someone on here with a similar story to share.

    Goodluck

  • Welcome, I'm glad you found us!  I'm so sorry about what you're going through.  I agree, that is quite a mystery knowing that you were pregnant last March.  Obviously your husband had sperm then!  I've heard that it is possible to extract sperm in cases of azoospermia though so I wouldn't lose hope yet.  And IVF has a pretty high success rate.  Best of luck to you!!

  • Welcome, I am really sorry you have to be here. But this is a nice place and hopefully you feel at home here.

In my case my husband had very low sperm count and motility so we had to do IVF as well, it is not so scary as one may think. Plus it is so great the meds are covered. I don't have any experience with donor sperm tho so I cannot help with that.

I understand what you mean about the wait, for us too when we forst started testing my husband had to see a urologist and it tooks months before the appointement then months before the procedure than three months before we tested his sperm again... There seems like there will always be delays, but eventually, hopefully you get there!! I wish you all the luck in the world!

  • Wow, thanks so much for your replies. I took a few days off from thinking about infertility and it's nice to come back to some supportive messages. Hopefully you're right @wifeinraleigh28 ! It's so frustrating waiting another few months for appointments but I feel a lot more hopeful now than I did before.

  • @Knottie01971686 So sorry to hear about your struggles. I have a cousin who has to do IVF because her hubby also makes 0 sperm. They did a procedure where the inside of his testicles were scraped to get some sperm. Not sure what his condition is called, but he has a biological child. Also not a pleasant procedure from what I've heard, but worth it. Hopefully your husband will be able to do that.

    Best of luck!

  • @AandDM2014
Thanks so much for letting me know that. I am feeling a lot more hopeful now after I let the news sink in for a while. We got our appointment with the urologist, it's in a month from tomorrow! I was so ready to wait another 3-4 months so I'm feeling really positive. At least it's happening more quickly than I thought. My biggest fear was that I'd be another year older before we even started IVF. Now it's looking like we can at least get some answers about DH's sperm in the next 2-3 months. (Fingers crossed)
