Baby Names

Lucca?

If we have a girl, my boyfriend really wants to name her Lucca. It's traditionally a boys name in Italy, and it means "bringer of light." We both like the middle name Rae. He's in love with it, and I like the name too, but I wonder if it's too untraditional?

Re: Lucca?

  • were you hoping for a boy?
  • It's a lovely name...for a boy. Please don't name your daughter that.

  • "My name is Luka. I live on the second floor." Luca is great for a boy.
  • I don't understand slapping a girl with a fantastic Italian male name. It's not just in Italy that's a boy name and I can't image anyone with any Italian heritage wanting to use it on a girl. Not to mention then using Rae there isn't one femine sound to it Lucia is a nice girl option.

  • There are so many beautiful Italian girls names to choose from. I generally don't understand why you would want everyone to think you had/wanted a boy.

Luca is on our short list....for a boy. It's a boys name for sure.
  • Your daughter deserves a feminine name.
  • I would never think this was for a girl.
  • All boy. Please don't.

  • I would never, ever guess Lucca Rae is a girl.

If you do use Luca, please spell it Lucca. The extra c doesn't make it feminine, but made up.
  • First of all, it's definitely a boys name. Second, the Lucca spelling isn't a first name. It's a place and maybe a surname. It's just a trendy variant of Luca. Rae is just eh. Lucia is a beautiful name for a girl. Putting a misspelled boys name on a girl isn't clever. It just makes you look like you don't know any better.

Now I will have that song stuck in my head all day! Lol
  • Luka is great for a boy.
    What about Lucy?
  • Lucca is an improperly spelled, boys name. How about Lucia if you want to stay Italian?

I don't think it's untraditional. I think it's a hack job. Sorry to be harsh but these are beautiful, classic names that are being sawed apart for the sake of being unique. I think it will reflect poorly on you and your partner.
  • Does Lucca sound like "Luck-ah"? That's what it looks like.
  • Lucia Rae would be beautiful
  • I'm Italian American and live in a predominantly Italian American area. Luca is very commonly used where I'm from, and I've never seen it used on a girl. It's definitely a name for a boy.
  • I have a baby name app that has "Lucca" suggested as a girl name. However, I would say that there are SOOOOO many names on that app that are either masculine (and they spelled it different to make it look feminine), or made up names, or spelled uniquely, that after making a list of names that I like.....I go online to make sure that it is a legit name for the sex that I want to use it for. Even if you Google "female name Lucca" it pops up as being the male name Luca.

I agree with the previous posters, that Lucia Rae is so much cooler!
