Thoughts on the the name Lila for a girl

Our daughter is Madelyn and we want a classic name for #2 that is not too common in our area (Scottsdale/Phoenix) so what do you think of...

Lila James
Lila Leigh

Note - both middle names are family names that have HUGE importance to us!

Thanks for your thoughts!

  • Lila Leigh. James just doesn't sit right for a girl.

Personaly I am tired of Lila, Lily, and similar names. Also even though James may be a family name it screams trendy and I love to follow celebrity trends right now

  • I like Lila. I'm tired of James for girls, even if it is a family name, so I vote Lila Leigh.
  • I really don't like the sound of Lila Leigh but it wins by default since James is masculine. I would keep searching for a better FN to go with Leigh.
  • Lila is a fine name. I strongly dislike James on a girl despite family significance but I also don't like Lila Leigh because of it's tongue twisterness. I think maybe your best option is to find another first name to go with Leigh if you can't budge on middle names. We can help suggest some that might fit your style if you decide to go that route :)
  • Ugh. No to James. Would you name your son Louis Claire? Then don't name your daughter Lila James.
  • James - please, no.

Lila Leigh sounds like a jingle to me. So much so that I don't think it's actually usable. Is there another name you like? Is Leigh the only female family name you could use as a middle?

  • What about Layla? Similar sounds, but doesn't run into Leigh quite as much.
  • Lila Leigh reminds me of the daughter on Teen Mom OG Leah Leann. I don't get the names sounding so similar
  • I agree with others re: James. It is a boy's name and so celebrity trendy right now for girls. Really don't like it.

    Amelia Leigh
Annabel Leigh (the Edgar Allen Poe connection may help or harm this cause depending on your tastes)
    Audrey Leigh
    Sadie Leigh

  • James is a boy's name.
    DD: Ophelia 5/18/15
  • Classic lovely names can be Charlotte Leigh, Samantha Leigh, Katrina Leigh or even Anna Leigh ;)
Not into James and L on L maybe difficult but if you love them then that's what matters
    good luck
  • Go with Lila James. It's a friggin middle name. No one should get their panties in a bunch over the boy/girl thing. It's a beautiful name and it has meaning to you. Go for it.

My underwear is unbunched, thanks for your concern.
  • Why not save James for the possibility of a future son?

James on a girl is so trendy and screams celebrity obsessed, even if you're not. I wouldn't do it.

Lila is a fine name. I personally don't like it paired with Leigh but if that is your only option then I'd say it's better than pairing it with James.

Really love the previous suggestions of Samantha Leigh, Charlotte Leigh, or Anna Leigh. I would add...

    Catherine Leigh
    Rosamund Leigh
    Margaret Leigh
    Cassandra Leigh
    Victoria Leigh
    Brianna Leigh
    Susannah Leigh

  • Although I am not a fan of the name James, if James is someone that is extremely important to you, then I would use it. As someone on the outside looking in, I would automatically assume that you were just following the weird celebrity trend that is going on right now. However, I know that sometimes there are people of the opposite sex that you would like to honor in the middle name spot, and there wouldn't be a chance that you would get to use it (like if you are done having kids, or end up having all girls, etc). There are more men in my life that I would like honor than women, and if our second is another girl, she will most likely have a middle name after one of those men. Plus, I don't like the name Lila Leigh....the double "L" drives me more crazy than the middle name James.

  • What about Lila Jamie?
  • I would rethink Lila and DEFINITELY use Leigh as the MN. James on a girl is just bad.

  • I can't get past either middle name. I think I'd choose a different first name if you insist on Leigh.
  • I really dislike masculine names on girls, so I'd veto Lila James. Lila Leigh is very sing-songey but I don't hate it. I think you could do better, though, if you're open to other first names.
