Weight loss first trimester

I'm gonna start with a disclaimer, this is not a post to flame or shame those gaining or losing weight because I truly believe it's not a competition of any kind during pregnancy. I know weight is a sensitive topic but I really need advice on this one.

All day sickness have been really bad for the past 2 weeks and even if diclegis have stopped the vomiting I'm still loosing weight. I'm worried because I've been eating nutrient-dense food like avocado and peanut butter but nothing seems to work. I'll sure discuss those issues with my OB at my next appointment (12/30) but I wonder if anyone have tricks or is in the same boat.

Re: Weight loss first trimester

  • The baby will take whatever it needs from your body. Right now, focus still on those nutrient rich foods, take your vitamin and stay hydrated. Only if your dr is worried should you be worried.

Story time: my sister lost 15 pounds in her first tri. She's now 38 weeks about to have a beautiful little girl. She gained it back (and a litle more) in the 2nd and 3rd tri.

  • I went to the Dr. last week. I was 10 weeks and had lost about 10 lbs. Dr. was not concerned at all.

I have lost 12 lbs since becoming pregnant for the same reason. I spoke to my OB who said it wasn't a big deal right now, that you're not supposed to be gaining a ton right now anyway. She said that the baby will get everything it needs regardless. So just keep trying to get stuff down.

I kept a banana next to the bed because I was hungry after throwing up my dinner. I took small bites throughout the night and felt ok this morning. Just try small snacks. She suggested never full meals, just small things throughout the day. Hope it gets better for you!
  • I didn't have any morning sickness but lost 5 pounds between my 1st and 2nd appointments (1 month apart). Not sure what my weight is now, 2 weeks after that.
Everyone is different in how their body responds to pregnancy. My husband's cousin is 7 months and has gained 8 pounds total. Her sister gained close to 50.
I'm quite the wino (I don't drink to get drunk but I love wine and trying new ones, it's a hobby of mine) and attribute my weight loss this early in my pregnancy to giving up drinking.
  • My last pregnancy, I lost a bunch of weight the first tri. Drs said it is totally normal. Baby will take what it needs (which isn't much right now!). I gained it all back and thensome! Unless you started super underweight, don't worry about it. Just stay hydrated!

  • My last pregnancy I lost 16 pounds in the first trimester. I am already underweight. I am 5'7" and was 99 lbs. I had to be put on phenergan and started gaining like a champ. This time around they first time I got sick I called my Dr. To be put back on medicine.. I'm maintaining at 112 .. ( gained 4 pounds  )

I eat small meals frequently .. Seems to help.
  • I lost weight in the 1st tri in my first pregnancy and this one (so far). I'm lucky to not suffer from morning sickness, just growing a baby takes energy. My doctor wasn't concerned last time and I doubt they will be this time. Every women is different, just like every pregnancy is different.

  • I've lost weight so far, too and I'm already pretty small - 5' and 105 lb. I'm not worried bc I know once 2nd tri hits I'll catch up. That's what happened in my 1st pregnancy - gained nothing the 1st tri and ended up gaining around 40 lb by the end. As long as you are getting fluids and your dr. isn't concerned, I think you're ok. Hang in there - it's really rough in the beginning!

  • When I was pregnant with DD, I lost 12 pounds in 2 weeks (week 10-12) before I started Zofran. Between starting meds and getting to the second tri, I was able to eventually gain weight. My midwife said during the first tri it's not so important to gain weight, but it's not a good feeling to lose weight either. Hope your doctor has some good suggestions about what to do to help gain weight back. Hope you feel better.
  • Thank you all for your answers. Im in a similar situation as @taboullio84 , starting the pregnancy with a BMI on the low side. I called today for an appointment with a nutritionist. It will go after the holidays, so I hope by then the nausea will mostly be gone. It was reassuring to see that I'm probably not hurting the baby, and even small meals are enough for now.

  • I agree with the above suggestion of bites regularly throughout the day as opposed to even small meals. When my MS was at its worst this was the only thing that worked. A bite of banana with a swipe of PB every 15 min or so. Also smoothies, it's easy to hide more calories and sometimes easier to drink than eat.

Sorry - I know this wasn't about eating, but thought it was relevant!

I hope you get your appetite back soon. Just try to stay hydrated even if you have to force yourself.

First pregnancy I lost 20lbs. Second lost 15. Third lost 12. Already down 7lbs this go around. All three were all a healthy 7.5lbs+ at 38.5wks. Like a PP said, baby will take whatever it needs. Try to eat healthy, take your vitamin, stay hydrated and you'll be good.

Even though I had only gained 10 pounds my first pregnancy my son was 7lbs 12 ozs. So if you end up not gaining much don't sweat it.. They steal what they need from you. lol
  • I've lost about 8 lbs so far, no MS but I'm not eating as much as everthing smells bad. I am sure I will make up for it over Christmas :)
