Shepherd

What do you think of Shepherd?

My husband and I just recently found out we are expecting #2 and he threw this boy name suggestion out tonight.

Does it sound too Biblical? Does it go with our DS Susannah?

I think I like it. We also like Calvin.

Thanks!

  • Oh also, what about it paired with the last name House? Does it just sound like a home where a bunch of Shepherds live? Having a noun for a last name makes this really tough.

  • I actually like Shepherd, and yes, it does sound Biblical, especially paired with Susannah.
Shepherd House is not good though. Calvin is nice.

  • It doesn't sound biblical to me.
It's terrible with house. Sounds like a door sign!
Only warning is nn of Shep. Would you be ok with that?
  • Thanks for the honest feedback! I hate when I love a name I can't use because of our LN... like Grace.

I think Shep is an adorable nickname. I don't know if I'm ready to rule it out completely yet. :/

  • Not a fan. Really not good with house.
  • Not a fan in general and definitely not with your last name.
  • Hate to pile on, but Sheperd is just NMS, while Sheperd House is awful (or maybe just located next to Goatherd House). Good luck finding an alternative you love!
  • I think Shepard is awful in general but more so with your surname. I would avoid any occupation type name. Calvin is excellent.

  • How about Calvin Shepherd?

  • Makes me think of reality TV (anyone else watch Southern Charm)? If you want biblical, actually go biblical.

  • It is really, truly terrible with your last name. I'm sorry. Even as a middle name, I think it's bad. Calvin Shepherd House sounds like a hospital wing or something. I really do like Calvin, though, and it sounds great with Susannah.

    @HouseSpouse

It's not my style for a name - maybe because I never thought of it as a possibility before. It just seems a bit strange to me. However, I really do like Calvin.

  • I would side-eye Shepherd House so hard.

I think a first name with 3 syllables would probably sound best with a single syllable last name-- but that's just me.
  • Calvin is nice and I love Susannah!

  • Shepherd isn't the worst name I've ever heard but it's definitely not good with the last name house
  • Don't like Shepherd but I do like the suggestion of Calvin Shepherd House.  We have a last name that eliminates some good first names too...it stinks!

Yeaaaah....I would side-eye Shepherd, but Shepherd House.  Sorry, I can't get on board with that.  NMS.

  • I kind of like Shepard, but not with House. Calvin pairs better with Susannah too.
  • I like Calvin a lot and think it would be cute with your LN. Just avoid Gregory, ok? ;-)
  • I like Shephard but I feel like everyone would end up calling him Shep, which I HATE.
  • Shephard house sounds like a place not a name.
  • To me, Shepherd House sounds like the name of a Catholic charity on skid row housing the homeless population --or mending the legs of crippled dogs or something.
Altruistic and sweet but probably not what you are going for a baby name.
  • Not with your last name, no.

  • Not my style at all. But I can tell that we don't have similar taste in names. I don't like Calvin much either but prefer it to Shepherd. I really really don't like Shepherd.

This. Or one of the rehab places people get sent to on Intervention.
  • If you call your child Shepherd House.. People are going to take screenshots of his name and send it to each other to laugh.. Trust me.. I do this all the time.. I don't mean to be rude but please do not do that to your child.. If you love him.. Do not put him through that
  • I am not a fan of Shepard in general, but that last name makes it really bad. With a last name that is a noun, I would stay away from any other noun names.

Ahhhhhh...... i mean I typically dislike both last names and professions as given names. (So Mackenzies and Taylors are on my no-fly list, for example)... but.. yeah I don't hate this.

Shepherd House sounds like a hipster folk band. Or a really ironic name for a metal band. Or maybe a subgenre of house music. So... evaluate that as you will.
  • Ha thanks everyone. Don't worry it's been off the list for a while. Once I said the full name out loud to DH we both agreed it sounds ridiculous.
