Rhyming first and last names

What do you think of rhyming first and last names? There are a handful of names that I like that end with the same sound as our last name, which is almost exactly like the word "Piano". The names I'm considering are Hugo, Vincenzo (we would call him Enzo), and Antonio. DH is 1/2 Italian and looks it as well, so having an Italian sounding name wouldn't be too weird (at least I think so, but give me your opinion if you think this is a bit of a stretch).

Re: Rhyming first and last names

  • I wouldn't choose a name ending in the same sound as my last name.

You're names are VERY Italian. (Too much for me.) What about something slightly Italian like Luca?

  • I don't think your names are "too" Italian, but I would try to avoid the rhyming.

@bbiutmcph has used Italian names, she might have some on the top of her head that don't rhyme with piano.

VERY Italian? Is that really a bad thing? Honestly, I don't think Luca is any less Italian sounding than her choices.

OP your names are very nice but I wouldn't choose something that rhymes with your last name.

  • I actually think they all sounds fine. They end in the "oh" sound but that's it. The only one that sounds a bit odd is Antonio. I think it has too many of the same sounds or something. I think the other 2 are good. I really like Hugo!
  • Many times Italian names rhyme. Personally we are 100% and live in a heavily populated Italian area so sing songey type names are common and we are heavily tied to our heritage. personally I don't know if we weren't if I would use a very strong Italian name but that's just me. Hugo is nice and uncommon. I think Vincent would be a nice alternate. Others that might not be so rhymey

    Anthony
    Dominic
    Salvatore
    Carmine
    Giovanni

  • I think it's fine to have your fn/last name end in the same sound, but you do want to avoid being overly rhymey. The only name you listed I really don't like is Antonio- sounds the weirdest with your last name. I like Vincenzo but I don't like the way Enzo 'Piano' sounds. Maybe Vincent is a good substitute here? My favorite name you listed is Hugo.
  • We are considering Vincent as a possibility. I don't like "Vinny" though, which is probably an inevitable nickname, but I can't control everything, can I?

We like Giovanni as well, and a version of Antonio that doesn't end in an "O" is also on our list.

FWIW, one of my besties in college was Vincent, and Vinny was never a nickname anyone called him. Our class either called him Vince or Vincenzo.

I think Vinny is pretty easily avoided, unless your family are all huge fans of My Cousin Vinny.
  • My last name ends in -er so I've had to mark off all first names that end in -er also, it's sad but the way it is! I think most -o ending names are out for you too.
