Guys Target is having a huge baby sale this week! I woke up to the notification and was super excited. I made DH breakfast and cleaned both bathrooms before convincing him that buying our travel system today was a must (even though we agreed to wait until February). I am overly excited about buying baby things!

I was planning on going to target tomorrow anyway because I need some storage containers to clear out the nursery! I jokingly told my husband we would just look at some baby things....but if there's a sale....eek!

  • @benten24 @Nerdchild We have a Twilight Turtle in DD's roon and it works out perfect. We didn't want to get her use to having a nightlight from the get-go, but we wanted something in there that would light up the room light enough if we had to do a diaper change or feeding. I put the turtle in a spot where I could hit the button when I walked in, and it would project stars and the moon on the ceiling, give us the light we needed, and turn off after 45min. When she was older, we had it sitting on her bed where we would turn it on before we left her room, and if she happened to wake up in the middle of the night and was scared, she could tap it on. Usually, if she woke up, she would just go back to sleep, but there were a few times she would turn it on if she needed it.

  • @TiffRox81 My BBB definitely takes expired coupons too, including from Bed Bath & Beyond (same company). I thought that was company policy. I wonder if your mom just got a crabby cashier. I would try again.

  • @PhoebeJune1984 That's so cute!  I may have to get one of those. :)
  • @stellaluna14 they are having a huge baby sale! We just got the Graco Click Connect system (car seat, base, and stroller) for $170! Feels awesome to have one of our big purchases checked off the list!

  • I went to Target to start my registry. And then I went to Buy Buy Baby to start one just to get the gift bag. I plan on deleting that one later. I'm just really into the gift bags.

Ha I've done the exact same thing!

  • Nuts, @whataboutscience! The registry guy specifically told me they wouldn't take expired coupons, but we gave it a shot at checkout thinking exactly that - maybe we'd get a sympathetic soul. Nope! She was quick to check the date, ask if we had any others and then say sorry they only take current ones. Maybe I need to travel to a different city, lol!
  • @AAAG13 thank for the target sale heads up! I just got my travel system for $115 off! That's a huge help! I also convinced DH to go later tonight to get other baby essentials. Good lookin out
  • 30% off Graco at Target!! We may have to buy the carseat today!

Question: Are you guys registering for clothes/toys? I've heard not to because people will buy these anyway and they'll ignore your requests and get what they think is cute... At the same time I hate for family to waste their money (our registries are relatively small and family is huge and already started the purchasing). I plan to return/donate gendered clothing and over-stimulating toys and clutter that DH and I have discussed not wanting. I don't want to be too controlling, and it may be fruitless anyway, but is it worth adding the type of stuff we'd like as guidance? What do you think? What are you guys doing?

I always buy from people's registries so I love when folks register for what they really want. It helps that toys come in varying price ranges too. Some folks do a combo of on/off registry purchases so it's nice to give lots of options. I put (and received) other small stuff like bath soap, too.

Also, you'll still be able to use the completion discount for anything not purchased after your shower ;) Go for it!

I say add them. It is true, that you will get a lot of clothing that people think is just cute, but there are people who like to look at the registry clothing for ideas. Like I will usually get a pack of socks that the person registered for, and maybe some onesies that they registered for, and then maybe an outfit that I think is cute, but goes along with the style of stuff that they registered for. One of my friends registered for a lot of purple clothing items, but I found something that I loved at a farmers/craft outdoor market, so that helped me pick the color....knowing that she loved purple and to stay away from the pink. Since we are Team Green, I am only registered for infant socks (since we need them), and left it at that. With our previous pregnancy, people didn't want to buy clothes previous to us finding out the sex anyway, they all shopped for clothing after she was born. So I am guessing they will do the same thing this time.

  • @noelietrex thanks for the heads-up about the Graco discount! They have the double stroller I was eyeing... and I'll get an additional discount with my RedCard!
  • @noelietrex I haven't registered for many clothes, but I've registered for a lot of toys and things like that. People like to buy cute things, so I'm guessing they'd rather buy the Waldorf this or that over the baby seat.

  • @givemepenguinss We're trying to avoid plastic as well. For a lot of reasons, but primarily environmental. I don't want a lot of shit that's going to end up in a dumpster. And not just baby stuff, we try to avoid single purpose items/single use items/plastic things throughout our lives. We're not always successful, but that's what we're working towards.

I was one of those horrible people who always went off registry and bought what I thought was cute (I always gave gift receipts). Now that I am pregnant and have made a registry I hate former me.
@Mckcak23 hahahaha, I was... and still am!... that person. Now unfortunately I'm all, "Dude, you NEED this thing and that thing, and these things, and this crap and ohhmygod I LOVED these." Cuz I'm a knowitallSTM...

  • @mckcak23 Omg, ME TOO!!! Seriously. Thinking back, I was the worst. I feel bad for all of my recipients, lol.
  • Honestly my registries are all messes. I'm trying to register for a little of this and a little of that at each place because I have no idea where people will go- anyway, who knows if I'm doing it right or not. I haven't really registered for toys or clothes- I have registered for socks, hats,  and mittens and white onsies and that's about it for clothes.
  • Did you guys register for diapers and wipes and baby powder, etc??
  • Did you guys register for diapers and wipes and baby powder, etc??

We didn't but I think it is a personal preference. We did receive some diapers but it kinda sucked because they weren't the kind we liked, but we used them for sure.
  • @PinkLady2015 We're going to cloth diaper but plan on using disposables until the meconium passes. I went ahead and put a few packs on our amazon registry so that when I need to buy them I could get the completion discount. I've been trying to buy one or two cloth diapers a month, but I'll probably stick a few on there for the discount too.

  • @jlgriff11 I feel you! I have the same concern. I want to choose places convenient so I'm torn on how to split up items between a couple places. I'm thinking of making one place more of the needs and the second more of the wants. We'll see.

@PinkLady2015 Why not? I did! I didn't register for the newborn size because I've been warned that they grow quickly and you don't want a ton of that size but I did do some
of the next two sizes after that. And wipes.
  • @PinkLady2015 I registered for 8 packs of Honest wipes, 2 containers of baby powder and diaper cream (one for nursery, one for diaper bag) and 4 little bottles of hand sanitizer at Target. I'm going to register for Honest brand diapers once I know the sex, so I can pick an appropriate print.

I figure knowing I'll have all of these things right away might help the first few weeks with a newborn a little easier! Plus, I feel like some people like to do small gifts + a book or a basket-style gift of little toiletries and what not, so these items will most likely be bought compared to some big ticket items off the registries.
  • Thx ladies! I wasn't sure how "thorough" I should be, but went ahead and threw that stuff on there!
  • @noelietrex I say put it all on there! I know people will buy stuff we didn't ask for or that they think we should have and that's to be expected, but u agree with previous posters that at least if you add some things people will have a better idea of what you want. We can dream right? Also, I want the completion discount so I figure add anything I can think of haha.

I have a question though. We are doing exclusively cloth diapers and wipes. I know a lot of people like to include disposables of both as parts of gifts but I really don't want people to waste their money when we won't use them. Is it rude to include something on the shower invitation letting people know nicely that we would prefer they not buy these things? I'm registered for cloth diapering supplies so hopefully they'll get the idea but I know some people don't even look at those things.

  • @stellaluna14 I have the same question! We don't want diapers or wipes because we're using cloth from day 1. I think Amazon had a section for "notes" to write that on the registry. I wonder if Target and BRU have a similar feature. I don't want to put it on the invite (or ask MIL to) so I'm hoping word of mouth and a note on the registry will be enough. That being said we already received a couple packs of newborn diapers from a couponing friend. Trying to decide wether to donate them to a diaper drive or keep them "just in case".
  • @noelietrex keep them just in case! If your LO is small, he/she may not fit in the cloth ones right away. It make take a little growing before they can wear them!

I'm at least keeping one pack because DH folding prefolds makes me nervous. If his track record with folding towels is any indicator... Since I'm sewing most of my own stash I'm doing a newborn specific one as well as one-size so I expect baby to be able to CD at as little as 5lbs. If I have the materials I want to do 3-5 premie covers and prefolds and if I am fortunate enough not to need them I'll donate them :)

Edit: where'd you go, quote box?

Why can men not figure out how to fold a freaking towel? I'm not big on stereotyping male behavior, but the day I meet a man who can adequately fold a towel is the day I'll stop believing all men just somehow create a giant square towel and think it's fine...

  • I have registered on Amazon.  I registered for a new double stroller and an umbrella stroller, a humidifier, new boppy and boppy lounger; new swing/bouncer, and a few other random things.

  • Not necessarily for a registry- but these have been great for storing DD's toys:
    Kusiner- IKEA $19.99
    Torkis- IKEA $4.99

Before having a baby I didn't realize how much space all this stuff would take up! IKEA also has really affordable crib options and bedding, etc., too.
  • Someone brought up nipple pads on the freebies thread, I think.

I LOVED these ones last time. They're so soft, they're washable, and cute! Plus they have a silly name.

I found the disposable ones stuck to my sore, raw nipples, no good. You could also see them under my shirt, but these were flat and you couldn't see.

    Register for these!!

    https://www.buybamboobies.com

They're also on Amazon and Target, so register away!
I got these as a gift, and didn't even hardly use them. I think that I used one pair, a couple of times. My FAVORITE ones were LilyPadz silicone nursing pads. They would create a seal over my nipples, and I never dealt with leaking through any other pad or anything. Sometimes, there would be milk in the LilyPadz, but it was only enough that would fit in there, and when I was taking it off, I usually just wiped off my boob with a burp rag when I took it off. They were especially awesome when I was tapering off my pumping sessions (I EP'ed), and was going longer between pumpings. I wouldn't wake up completely soaked like I would with a normal breast pad.
