BF moms: how do you know LO is getting enough to eat?

I know there's a FF thread out there, but wanted to know, for BF moms, how do you know you are making enough milk for LO? My DS is 6 weeks old and last night I felt like he sucked me dry. I didn't get a chance to catch my breath until he finally took a paci, went to sleep for an hour and gave me a chance to get some sleep/replenish. Maybe I am overthinking this? I know your supply doesn't get established until 12 w and I do on demand feedings, so I have no set schedule (nor do I track).

So how can I tell that my little guy is getting enough? Well, without waiting for the 8 week well baby appt (ie. for his weight gain to slow)? THANKS!!

Re: BF moms: how do you know LO is getting enough to eat?

  • You LO should have At least 6-8 really wet diapers a day. That is the best indicator. Also yellow poop. If your LO is 6 weeks old he is probably going through a growth spurt and wanting to breastfeed all the time.
  • Loading the player...
  • As long as he is having appropriate wet and poopy diapers you're producing enough. My little guy has days he doesn't do anything but eat and then he has days, like today, he fights me to eat (he's been super cranky). But he is still having plenty of wet and messy diapers so I'm not concerned at all
  • I have a scale and weigh him before and after every feeding. He lost 12% of his body weight and weight gain has been slow, so I only trust it if I weigh him. He usually eats 1.5 ounces from each side, so if he on,y eats from one side, I know he needs more.
