Teachers - telling your admin the news?

I apolgize, as I know this has been posted multiple times, but I am wondering what you all did.  We just had our big appt and things are good, so I'm getting ready to share with friends, extended family, etc... I don't quite feel ready to tell my principal yet, but I know I need to as I wouldn't want him to hear second-hand.  I'm still going to wait to tell the teaching staff and students... but you know.

So did you/ will you:

- go to benefits/ superintendents office before or after
- set up a meeting or just "pop in" (either is acceptable with my school)
- give them the due date and your plan (6 weeks sends me back to school the end of may with approximately 3-4 weeks to go... I can take it FMLA unpaid, or just head back and suck it up BUT I'm sure I won't decide until absolutely necessary)!
- what else?

I'm feeling nervous about it and I can't pinpoint why.  I just want to be as prepared as possible when I do it (maybe tomorrow?)

AND yes, after reading the post below, I am seriously hoping that the man can keep a secret -- I am definitely going to make it crystal clear that he is not to share!! (I would be livid if I were put in that situation, BTW)!!

Re: Teachers - telling your admin the news?

  • I will have to tell, but I'm trying to wait until I'm the same as you...13 weeks, and then I'm gonna have to tell...I guess I'll just walk in and tell him  lol

  • i was bleeding last Friday and had to out myself...My principal was very understanding and told me to leave and go...

I told my AP yesterday and emailed him...he was awesome...

I need to tell my regular principal, she is out on family leave as she just adopted a new baby!

  • I'm not really far along just yet so I've only told two people at work that I'm close with, but I have been debating this situation. As far as my contract is concerned, I'm not obligated to talk to HR until I reach 4 months, at which point I'll let the admin. powers that be know our due date and whatnot. It was suggested to me that I tell my principal after my appointment in 2 weeks so that he'll be prepared if I take a sudden day off due to m/s, but to be explicit that I don't want anyone else to know until I announce to the staff.

I'm thinking that I'll wait until Thanksgiving break and see how much I'm actually showing, and possibly let the staff know then, or after Winter break. I have some really great ideas for announcing it to the staff if I can keep my own mouth shut. Stick out tongue

  • I told my principal yesterday and she is very excited for me.  I told her because M/S is already setting in and I wanted her to know what was going on.  Also , we had our first case of H1N1 and we had a case of ffiths desease.  So, i need her to keep me informed.

Anyway, I am one of the lucky ones to be due when school gets out for the summer so I won't have to worry about a Maternity leave, but when I get farther along I will go and talk to the HR department. I have no idea what the protcal is for Mat leave, but I know they will have all the answers.

    Good Luck to you.

  • I informed my AP on Tuesday.  I had to tell her because I have NO energy and I didn't want her to think I was just being a slacker.  She was very supportive, but she has 4 kids of her own, so she can understand.  I'm going to wait until my 12 week appt to tell my head principal because she's less "pregnant friendly".  So I'll give an update in two weeks...

  • I just asked to talk to my principal for a few minutes, and I told really early on (at 6.5 weeks).  I also told my two paraprofessionals early on.  I had to tell early because I teach in an Autism Classroom and some of the kids have aggressive behaviors, so I needed to them to know that I might need help and would not be able to restrain a student if necessary.  My principal and I are both new to the school, so I wasn't sure how it would go.  She was very supportive and excited for me.  She asked me to tell my AP for the same reasons I told her.  My AP was also supportive.  Since then (several weeks later) I've slowly started telling other staff members.
  • I told my AP today(he is the go to guy for everything) because I am high risk and I will have a lot of appointments and M/S is kicking in. I let him know that I didn't want anyone to know and I also told him I planned on telling the rest of the staff before we leave for X-Mas break or right after. More than likely I will tell at the staff X-Mas get together.....I also have some cute ideas for coming out!
  • I'm not tenured (2nd year in the district but first in this school), so I was nervous about telling. I went to my union rep first to ask him about maternity leave options. Then after my u/s I popped into my supervisors office (it's really hard to find her...she's always running around), and she was really excited (she actually screamed!). She told me not to worry about the "red tape" stuff yet, and just to take care of myself. After that I didn't care who knew.
  • Thanks ladies!! It's nice to hear how others have done it/ plan to... I think today's the day!!
